How do I format my Sony PSP Memory Stick?

I got a Sony PSP two days ago and when I got it, it said I had 30 MB. Now it says that I only have 900 KB (and this is after I deleted everything, my games and songs, so it should have a clear memory)?

I then tried putting MP3s on it but it won't accept any of the songs I drag into my music folder. It always says that I don't have enough memory (this is also when I deleted everything so my PSP has a clear memory)

Help!

Dave's Answer:

I get a lot of questions from people who don't fully understand how to work with the PSP Memory Stick devices, and I believe that this is exacerbated by the fact that Windows really likes to hide files from regular users when browsing devices.

As a result, what you're seeing is that you have files that aren't being shown in a regular Windows (or Mac, for that matter) file view, but are clearly still on the Memory Stick.

Or, a simpler possibility: you're dragging things into the trash, but you aren't actually emptying the trash and deleting them from the device!

In any case, I recommend that every so often, and particularly when you first buy a memory stick, reformat it on the Sony PSP so that anything added by the memory stick manufacturer is removed, along with any hidden files you might have accidentally added.

You can format any size Memory Stick Duo in the Sony PSP by doing this:

  1. Push the little HOME button on the bottom left of the face of the unit.
  2. Use the arrow keys to move to the SETTINGS area, then move the up and down keys until you get to System Settings.
  3. Once you are there, click on the "X" button and scroll up and down as needed to find Format Memory Stick. Click on "X" again to select that option.
  4. The Sony PSP will now confirm that you want to reformat the memory stick (which removes every file and game save thereon, of course): choose yes and it'll format in just a few seconds.

Now you have a pristine new Memory Stick to work with and should have no problems with music, photos or other material you might seek to copy onto your PSP.

We bought a 8GM sony pro duo memory stick while we were travelling as out 4GB stick was full. When we are trying to upload our pictures onto the computer, we were asked to format it. we dont remember being asked this question when we had a 4Gb stick. We have lots of our baby pictures and video with families on the memory stick. how do we save the pictures now? if we format it, we will lost everything. we got pictures of our son with his great grandpa....

help us please.

For everyone having trouble about reading the max on the Pro Duo with it connected with a USB reader, connect the PSP directly to your PC using the connector on the top and the cable that came with your PSP.

I had the same problem "I Buy a 16GD for my PSP when I connect to my computer the D Disk whant to format it 4GD what should I do."

But when I connected my PSP directly the full 16GB was read...well.. more like 15 and change.. but your PSP will work just like the USB connector and you can transfer files to and from without any software.

Hope this helps

bobbydigital said, on March 30, 2009 5:59 PM:

I think some of the problems, if not most.. are from the USB reader itself. try connecting with your devices directly.

KNEE said, on May 4, 2009 7:43 AM:

YO!

I've been using my Sony mem stick since I got my PSP. (note; my stick wasn't brand spanking new. I work at a games store and silly people leave their mem sticks when they traded in PSP's. So I have a one gig USED stick)
When I got it (About 10 months ago) i did all the necessary adjustments to the stick (format, blah blah), and set up proper file layouts and stuff. It worked well. I've moved music and pics and stuff onto this stick and it's all worked fine. I could never be bothered moving movies onto it until a few days ago. I downloaded and trialed a few Video converters specifically for PSP's and after testing out one and moving to the stick, it worked nicely. Since that video i've been searching for things to move onto it.
The thing is, I never had a suitable cable for my PSP to connect it directly to the computer, and since my mem stick wasn't bought, I don't have a card reader for it. Instead, I've been using my digital camera to read the card and move files, which has worked perfectly.

Also, I just managed to get around to updating the firmware to the latest (5.50).
So tonight, I had to move my stick around quite a bit to test which videos worked and which didn't, and when I tried to read the stick from the camera, the computer wouldn't pop up the autoplay. After restarting the comp it was still the same. I put the stick back into the PSP and it wouldn't read anything. Says there's no stick inserted. Needless to say, I'm kinda lost. It was literally working about 5 minutes ago, and now the stick can't be read on either the PSP or camera, and I'm thinking something must have corrupted. And right now i'm thinking it's the firmware that won't read my stuff, but me not being a guru, I wouldn't know if firmware would do that at all.
Just to make sure it wasn't my PSP dying on me (onoes, FFVII Limited PSP D: )i inserted the stick which belonged to the camera, and it worked fine. All the images opened. So I know it's the stick, but I don't know how it could have stuffed itself.

I really need a solution, If there is one. I have a Crisis Core save game which has me on level 57 :( I'm so bummed, if anyone has a solution, please email me at kneenar@gmail.com
And if your solution works I will send cookies to your house and shower you with (virtual) gifts... >____>

~~Kneenar Halp :(

PS: Sorry for the long-winded message, I tend to ramble , especially when I'm flustered :(

I'm trying to download FFVII off the PSN store on PSP. I payed the $15.99 or whatever, and it starts downloading. The orange memory stick light is flashing the whole time, and it works fine. Then it gets to about 80% and the orange light goes off. It says it's still downloading yet it stays at 80%. So I left it for an entire night. Checked it the next day, it still says 80%. It happens each time at around 80% and i've tried numerous times. I have a 2GB memory stick and the game itself is only 1326MB. I have the latest system software and everything as well. I tried restarting it and going into the GAME folder. it says "CORRUPTED DATA". I'm quite frustrated because I bought the game from the Sony Playstation PSP Store Site thing, I downloaded it from there...and it does not download. I do not know why and it's really really annoying. I want to know whats going on or if I'll need a new PSP which I will be very upset about.

Please write back.

Dave, I am through the same problem than all later people posts above. I recently bought at BestBuy an Memory Stick Pro Duo Mark 2 16Gb that should work perfectly in my PSP Slim, as it is original Sony and is MagicGate certified. But the PSP corrupts the memory stick as soon as I attach the MS when it is loaded with more than 4Gb of data (PSP ISOs). After the corruption I must format (again) the MS either in PSP or PC (cardreader). I really don't know what to do anymore, as I already updated CFW from 5.00 M33-6 to GEN 5.50-B as a possible solution. My next step is to Format Flash 1 and restore settings. I appreciate your advice, as it seems you got a solution for previous people.
Thnaks a lot man.

I've recently downgraded it back to 5.00 m33 but it still doesnt work. I've checked everything and realized that the MagicGate has turned from "Supported" to "Unknown". Is this MagicGate "Unknown" the cause that I'm unable to play any games? Videos, music and pictures work though.
Would appreciate your answer very much. thanks

After installing 3.90 M33 through a newbie program, the psp couldn't read the files inside the ISO folder. Navigating to "Games, Memory Stick" in XMB, I get the message "There are no games."

Henry said, on June 11, 2010 8:29 PM:

The game ISO issues people are receiving are in majority the PSP firmware issues. I had a PSP game I made a back up off on my PC from the Sony store and it was also giving me errors (not reading), I basically had to update my firmware.

The one with the PSP stops reading ISO's after connecting to the internet because the firmware updates to PROTECT against fake iso's and as such the games will not read.

If you do have issues with legitimate ISO's contact the Sony store and they can send you the proper firmware download to fix your problems.

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me retrieve the photos from my memory card which has a virus. I have several hundred photos from my holiday which i can see on the camera screen when my memory card is in the camera however when i put the memory card into a memory card reader and try to copy them onto my computer it says there is a virus. The computer then asks me to scan and remove the photos but I am worried that by doing this I will lose the photos. Is there anyway I can get my photos off the memory card without losing them?

If anyone oculd help me that would be great!

Quick question here.

I recently purchased Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep I've saved a large amount of system data on to my Memory Stick to reduce load times. I'm afraid that because of this I won't have enough room to save my 3 save files that I will need to create for each characters story in the game.

Can I just drag the save and other files to a new larger memory stick without having any issues?

Please send response via email. I just happened to stumble upon this site and I don't think I'll be able to come back to it.

Thanks,

Jonathan

hello, i recently purchased a 16GB memorystick pro duo for 70 dollars for my psp. i had to plug it into my moms computer because her usb port is on the fritz. i had did this to put some music on it. her computer said i had to format it so i did so. i put on close to 80 songs and then i checked to see if the song transfer worked. i looked at the space left on my memory stick and it said that i have less than 3000MB. i sthis dramatic decrease in the memory from formatting my memory card on her computer or from putting the amount of songs that i put on it? if it is because of formatting the memory card then is it possible for getting that memory back? i dont want to spend another $70 on a new memory stick.

this question has been asked loads but i have had a 2 gigabyte memory stick for my PSP for...a very long time (i ot it when the first PSP came out) i also have a 32Mb memory stick. Recently i wanted to put a movie from my computer onto my PSP so that i could watck it on my PS3, so i copied all my files on the 2GB stick to the 32MB stick and then plugged in the 2GB stick to the computer. I then deleted any unnessary files and did the memory format function. But the memory stick only reads 479MB!!!!! the movie is 799MB but that only about 0.7 GB. I have deleted a whole load of files and stuff from the stick.. but still no result. Also i dont wanna delete some of the files because, although, they take up alot of space they all have really wierd names like NA008P.... and i dont know what they r for!??!?! :P have fun trying to solve the conundrum

THANKS

Hey Dave,
I don't know why but when i put games into my $GB memory stick from a shop, the game works but when i put games which i downloaded from the net into it, it says "there are no games" :( is it because my memory stick has a problem or my psp has a problem or is it the games which i downloaded???:( need immediate feedback please!!!!

Ricardo Little said, on May 27, 2011 4:20 AM:

The true fact is; nowadays, a lot of MEMORY STICK PRO DUO's (regardless of size) are fake. Consumers buy from eBay, or untrusted websites, and spend £75 / $100 / $150AUS on a 16gb - 32gb stick, and they're fake. You're screwed out of your money 9/10 times.

Be careful when buying memory sticks; I'd suggest only buying AS NEW from reputable stockists (direct from Sandisk / Sony, or actual gaming retail outlets). It costs more, but it's worth it

Hi, I have probably the worst problem which ruined my PSP data. I formatted my Memory stick because I had a problem which said I don't have enough memory, I risked losing all my data just to fix that problem but instead, the problem is still there but to make it worse, now I lost all my data, do you know how to fix this memory problem which says I dont have enough memory?"
Please reply and thank you for helping!
I only posted this a second time to fix the spelling errors, sorry for that Dave. Thank you

Even if I formatted the memory card it still doesn't show the full memory of the memory card when opened in a pc. But when I look in the psp it shows the full memory. So the problem is I need to see the full memory of the memory card in the pc so I can transfer files

Hi Dave, I own a PSP 3004, I have owned it for half a year now, and it has been working perfectly, but I had read that you should format the Memory Stick 'cause it will add missing files on it, so I formatted it (4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo MagicGate) now, when I plug it to my computer, my computer says it needs to be formatted 'cause it cannot be read. When I try to format it with my computer it says that the formatting could not be finished. Then when I take the PSP off it says that the memory stick cannot be read, and tells me to format the Memory stick. Then when I format the Memory Stick it says Format failed (80010011). What is the problem? Also, I am considering on buying a new Memory Stick, should I format it before I put anything on it or should I leave it unformatted?
