How do I format my Sony PSP Memory Stick?
I got a Sony PSP two days ago and when I got it, it said I had 30 MB. Now it says that I only have 900 KB (and this is after I deleted everything, my games and songs, so it should have a clear memory)?
I then tried putting MP3s on it but it won't accept any of the songs I drag into my music folder. It always says that I don't have enough memory (this is also when I deleted everything so my PSP has a clear memory)
I get a lot of questions from people who don't fully understand how to work with the PSP Memory Stick devices, and I believe that this is exacerbated by the fact that Windows really likes to hide files from regular users when browsing devices.
As a result, what you're seeing is that you have files that aren't being shown in a regular Windows (or Mac, for that matter) file view, but are clearly still on the Memory Stick.
Or, a simpler possibility: you're dragging things into the trash, but you aren't actually emptying the trash and deleting them from the device!
In any case, I recommend that every so often, and particularly when you first buy a memory stick, reformat it on the Sony PSP so that anything added by the memory stick manufacturer is removed, along with any hidden files you might have accidentally added.
You can format any size Memory Stick Duo in the Sony PSP by doing this:
- Push the little HOME button on the bottom left of the face of the unit.
- Use the arrow keys to move to the SETTINGS area, then move the up and down keys until you get to System Settings.
- Once you are there, click on the "X" button and scroll up and down as needed to find Format Memory Stick. Click on "X" again to select that option.
- The Sony PSP will now confirm that you want to reformat the memory stick (which removes every file and game save thereon, of course): choose yes and it'll format in just a few seconds.
Now you have a pristine new Memory Stick to work with and should have no problems with music, photos or other material you might seek to copy onto your PSP.

Do you know if I am better off buying my Sony PSP in the UK (where I live) or the US where I am off to in 5 weeks time, also can I charge any USA bought PSP in the UK & vice versa, I assume yes through the travel chargers?
Alan, I'd buy a UK PSP if I were you. Overseas versions are cool until they break and then you're in a very tough position.
In my Sony PSP I have a 256mb pro duo memory stick and I just formatted and it is saying that I only have 237mb of free space, where are my other 19mb?
Hello! I read your passage about the memory stick pro but still am having a problem. I have come to a point where my memory stick doesn't allow me to format through the PSP, it says that the disk can't be accessed... it is plugged in.
I upgrade my firmware to 2.6 but now i want to go back to 1.5 . I was wondering if i format my stick can i get 1.5 firmware back on my psp?
Hi, I just bought a memory stick with 512 megabytes and when I put it into my psp it says it has only 468 megabytes of free space. I'm wondering were the other 44 megabytes went because i havent saved anything onto it yet.
PS : I've already tried reformating the memory card and it still says 468 PLEASE HELP !
That's a classic problem, Jake, and one that makes me wish these companies would actually make 530MB cards so you'd end up with the 512MB available that you expect. The fact is that the actual layout of information on the Memory Stick (card, disk, etc) eats up a few percentage points of the available space and there's nothing you can do about it. When you bought a 512MB stick, it was really just a 'raw' measure: once you have it formatted, add a few necessary folders, etc, it's suddenly smaller. Very frustrating!
Put a SanDisk 1 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo in my granddaughters PSP. Loaded music to it via Media Player. PSP says "No Tracks" and we can't play them. Using Windows explorer, they show up on the PSP and if clicked, Media Player comesup and they play. Any thoughts?
Is it possible to run a windows operating system off a 2 gig memory stick. My hard drive tends to fail because of heat and dust. I'm only using a little over 1 gig on the hard drive.
I have tried formatting my memory stick pro duo gaming edition in my PSP following your advice and each time it tells me that 'there is no memory stick inserted'.
Gerry, no. The PSP is not a PC. :-)
Suzanne, it sounds like your memory stick is not PSP compatible. Can you take it back to the store and replace it with one that explicitly says "PSP compatible" on the packaging??
It states on the packaging that it is 'compatible with sony PSP' and even has a picture of a PSP on the packaging. It also states 'magicgate' at the bottom of the packaging. What is this?
Hmmm... sounds legit to me. Maybe it's just a bad individual unit?? Are you sure you're putting it into the PSP properly and getting it 'seated properly on the connector?
What is the procedure for getting it seated properly on the connector?
Take it out, then carefully line up the edges and push it back in. Push firmly on it. That should, theoretically, do it.
I some how accidentally formatted my memory stick, which is stupid, I know. However, is there any way I can get the data back?
There are some commercial apps out there that can help recover data from a memory stick or other flash device - just Google "memory stick recovery software" - but I can't say whether they'll work or whether they'll be worth the money. Good luck, and if you do try one, do pop back and let us know how it went!
I have a similar issue with a 1 gig card. When I format it using the format tool on the psp, it will only recognize 236 MB of space. The real kicker is when you look at it with a USB card reader XP recognizes at as a 1 gig card. Any ideas?
2GB Sony PSP had the same problem as Suzane,
I removed it and shook the contacts -- the gold ones -- a bit and put it back again and bingo it started working! Thought i should share with you guys.
I must say thanks so much you have helped me greatly in understanding my PSP!!!
Hi i used a hack that wrote on to the psp flash
memory and i screwed up along the way and now when i turn on my psp it wants me to set the date and when i do and press enter it goes to my psp screen but freezes and truns off. I was wandering is there any way of formating my psp like by opening or something? Please Please if you know anything or anybody that might know please please tell me thanks.
dear dave i have a slight problem with my memory card wen i bought i didnt no anything bout em so i put it in and nothing would save so i called the game store and they said i need to format it so i did and i worked for about 1 save and then i went to go save again and it said error so i took it out and no wen i turn my psp on these 2 red lights keep flashing and it says no memory card inserted and i even tried to reformt it agian but its like its not connected HELP!!! ME PLEASE SOP I CAN SAVE !!!
Joseph, sorry to hear about your troubles, but I have to say, that's exactly why I don't recommend or encourage people to use unknown hacks. :-(
James, I surmise that your memory stick device isn't PSP compatible, which is why you're having all these problems. I'd take it back to the store and/or replace it with one that explicitly says "PSP Compatible".
I try to format my memory card (2 gb sony memory stick pro duo) but it dosnt reconize it. How could i fix this. it clearly has a piture on the box of a psp.
I have purchased a Sandisk MS Pro Duo card, which I know is PSP compatible.
I am getting the error where it says no disk is inserted whenever I try to format. I have tried to format both in windows, and on the PSP. I'm assuming it's a bad unit.
For those people who think your memory card is less than you bought, you are wrong.
Windows measures size differently to sony, which is why it is less than it advertised.
hey dave i know u said that james probally had a memory stick that wasnt psp compatible, but i have the same problem with my memory stick and it is DEFINATLY psp compatible, i put it in and it says no memory stick detected, im guessing i messed up the stick itself, but if anyone knows why it would do this, let me know

I am trying to decide which Memory Card to get for a PSP and need help. Is there a difference between the Sony 2GB and the SanDisk 2GB ? Also, is there any benefit to the High Speed Sony 2GB vs the Sony 2GB ? Would you get the Sony 2GB or a 4GB SanDisk ? Any help you can give me would be helpful. Thanks.

Sir, I have a problem similar to most posted on this page. I have a 2G memory stick duo (one from Sony). It has been with me for more than a month now and it used to work perfectly fine until a few hours ago. Now, the PSP won't even recognize the memory stick. I really need the documents I put in there. Please help me.
Additional information about my problem with the 2G memory stick:
The PSP read it again after a few trials, but only for a few minutes.
I tried the memory stick, a 32mb one, that came with the unit and it was read just fine.
Thank you, in advance.
I have a sony ICD-MX20 digital voice recorder with a 256mgb memory stick. The original capacity for the 3 settings was 4-11-22 hours. I've noticed that less than a month since I last used it that the maximum recording times have changed to 1-2-4 hours. Is there anything I can do to restore the original capacity, and why did it change? Thank you

Here's a non-technical (mechanical) question.
My son managed to insert his PSP memory stick into
the E drive (it's in there)of my laptop. My laptop recognizes it and it can be opened.....but can't seem to eject it or otherwise remove it from the drive itself....he's bummed, I'm otherwise.
After the laughing stops...any suggestions (other than carry it in for service)?

I have a problem with my mem card as well. i have had this card for about a whole year now and it never gave me any troubles until today. I wanted to format the memory stick because there was an unaccounted space of like 300 MB on my 1 GB stick. I checked all the hidden files and every folder to see where it has gone, and the psp even told me that i had 1 gig. I could not find what the 300 MB was. So when I formatted it, it gave me an error message and the format was incomplete. When I checked my music/vid's, they were all gone, but it wasn't back to the orignial state. when I linked the stick to my computer, it only shows 2 hidden files, and that's it. There is no folders for music or video, or any sort, plz help me out.
i as most people have a problem with my memory stick. when i put it in the memory stick LED keeps on flashing on and on and when i try to format it, it says there isno memory stick inserted.

look i been tryna download music to my PSP for the last year i bought the USB cable and memory stick when i download music it says that the music is on my PSP but when i go to music files i dont see it what i doing wrong
I think it's probably safe to say that "Dave" isn't actually here as he hasn't posted a reply since May 7th 2006. I too am having the same problem with my sony pro duo 2gig stick (putting it in the PsP but it not recognising that there is a stick in the PsP, with the orange light continuosly flashing). Oh and if Dave does see this post, yes it is compatible with my PsP (I thought I would add that as that seemed to be your lame answer to the few you answered). Aside from that seeing as there are so many people here that are all having exactly the same problem, there has to be a site out there that can actually solve our problems.
Icey, didn't your Mom teach you that being pleasant gets better results than being hostile and sarcastic?
Understand that there ARE compatibility issues with memory cards from third party providers, even if they say that they are PSP compatible. Further, there are cards that are just outright mislabeled: go ahead and Google "counterfeit memory cards" and you'll see what I mean.
It's also the case that the quality control on memory cards / sticks seems to be lower than on SIMM and DIMM-style memory that you put into a computer: I have heard many, many stories of memory stick duo devices simply failing after a few days, weeks or months, never to be salvaged.
My general suggestion: pop out the memory card and put it in again. Plug your PSP into the wall. Try to let the PSP format the card. If it fails, take the card back to where you bought it and ask for a replacement and/or call up the manufacturer and ask for a replacement.
There's no magic "up-up-down-left" sequence that lets you override a flakey memory card, sorry.
Saying that my method didn't get better results pretty easy to argue when I was the 1st person you replyed to in a year but thats beside the point. Indeed I agree that there can be compatibility issues with THIRD party products, even though the main complaint has been about the sony pro duo, and again I agree that fake memory sticks can also be a problem. Saying that your general suggestion is to "take it back if your method fails" was never mentioned once in this whole page (not very general to me). If anyone else is reading this post, I suggest scanning the official forums on the playstation website as they are continously active. There range of information vast to help you sort your problem.
i formated my memory card but my psp dosn't see the games in iso and cso what can i do?
and the movies it dosn't see

what can i do?
cris, for the movies, you need to first convert it into psp compatible format before you are able to watch the movie through your psp... .mp4
Hope this helps you...

when i try formatting my 4gb memory card on my psp it says format error and then some letters appear after that. when i try formatting my memory card on my pc then it formats but 3.5gb is still used up an there is nothin in my memory card except a file which is named with funny symbols and letters and wont let me delete it. please get back to me im really stressing out.
Abu, I have heard a number of reports about having problems formatting 4GB memory sticks and my suspicion is that it's related to older firmware on the PSP. Those of you who are having problems with the 4GB card, are you running the very latest PSP firmware from Sony, or are you a few revs behind for homebrew capabilities?
I have my daughers graduation Pictures in a SD memory card (Fuji Camera) and when I took it out of the Camera and put in a card reader is asking me to format the card. If I format the card, I will lose all my precious Pictures. How do I get my pictures back? Can I get my pictures without formatting the memory card? Please help me. Hi dave i noticed you said you might need a new firmware to format a 4gb memory card. My psp is version 3.03 and i was wondering is that new enough or do i still need to upgrade?

my psp says that my memory card can not be read and that i shoukd format it but every time i tey to do it, it says format filed and number come up too and when i take it out is dosent work at all plz help me
Hi Dave, wondering if you could help me out here....I have searched and searched the web for a helpful answer and have came up empty...though it seems hundreds of people seem to be having the same prob.
THE PROB:: I plug my PSP into my computer wanting to put music MP3's on my SanDisk 2GB memory card. In "my computer" it recognizes a removable disk e: but when I click on it it says it is not formatted and asks if I would like to format it. I click yes and it acts like its starting for format and goes through the motions and when its done it says it was unable to format. I found some of your other instructions on formatting it using the PSP in the setting tab, it says it formatted but my computer says differently when I retry to put on music. This is very frustrating I had all my games and everything on it that are now gone and its still not formatted.
Another thing I just got a new phone a motokrzr k1m and its memory card does the same thing, so I cant get music on it either. So im pretty sure the memory cards are good...and am even surer that the problem lies with a setting on my computer and was wondering if you could think of anything. Thanks much
This is a classic err, but have formatted my memory stick thru windows and not thru the psp bec the stick has a virus that can't be cleaned. Now I have deleted everything! What to do now?
hi dave my mum just got back from overseas and brought me a memory card for my psp and it has games saved on to it and i t wont work in my psp but works in my brothers one that they brought
Same problem, psp telling me there's no memory stick... still no solution, by the way, why you keep asking Dave Taylor? its pretty clear he cant help anyone around here...
Easy there, champ. The reason I am not helping each individual person is because I've already answered and the answer is always the same: if you're putting in a good Memory Stick Duo into your PSP and it's not seeing it, something's wrong with your PSP and you need to get it serviced. I have a couple of articles on how to go about that here too:
ure doing a gd job here on this site but can u plz help me ive got a 4gb memory stick pro duo for my psp its compatible with my psp its been working but suddenly stopped and now its either not recognised and the orange light keeps on flashing or it is but says 0kb free space i try to format it but it says 'format failed(80220089)' can u plz help me im running software 3.10 OE-A plz reply coz i noticd u only reply nowadays when u r offended and i dont think that is true but if u dont reply then i will know that u dont reply thnks anyway plz reply
thanks for the info, this was bugging me a lot :)
