How do I format my Sony PSP Memory Stick?

I got a Sony PSP two days ago and when I got it, it said I had 30 MB. Now it says that I only have 900 KB (and this is after I deleted everything, my games and songs, so it should have a clear memory)?

I then tried putting MP3s on it but it won't accept any of the songs I drag into my music folder. It always says that I don't have enough memory (this is also when I deleted everything so my PSP has a clear memory)

Help!

Dave's Answer:

I get a lot of questions from people who don't fully understand how to work with the PSP Memory Stick devices, and I believe that this is exacerbated by the fact that Windows really likes to hide files from regular users when browsing devices.

As a result, what you're seeing is that you have files that aren't being shown in a regular Windows (or Mac, for that matter) file view, but are clearly still on the Memory Stick.

Or, a simpler possibility: you're dragging things into the trash, but you aren't actually emptying the trash and deleting them from the device!

In any case, I recommend that every so often, and particularly when you first buy a memory stick, reformat it on the Sony PSP so that anything added by the memory stick manufacturer is removed, along with any hidden files you might have accidentally added.

You can format any size Memory Stick Duo in the Sony PSP by doing this:

  1. Push the little HOME button on the bottom left of the face of the unit.
  2. Use the arrow keys to move to the SETTINGS area, then move the up and down keys until you get to System Settings.
  3. Once you are there, click on the "X" button and scroll up and down as needed to find Format Memory Stick. Click on "X" again to select that option.
  4. The Sony PSP will now confirm that you want to reformat the memory stick (which removes every file and game save thereon, of course): choose yes and it'll format in just a few seconds.

Now you have a pristine new Memory Stick to work with and should have no problems with music, photos or other material you might seek to copy onto your PSP.

Dave,

Do you know if I am better off buying my Sony PSP in the UK (where I live) or the US where I am off to in 5 weeks time, also can I charge any USA bought PSP in the UK & vice versa, I assume yes through the travel chargers?

Many thanks,

Alan.

Posted by: Alan at September 6, 2005 11:48 PM

Alan, I'd buy a UK PSP if I were you. Overseas versions are cool until they break and then you're in a very tough position.

In my Sony PSP I have a 256mb pro duo memory stick and I just formatted and it is saying that I only have 237mb of free space, where are my other 19mb?

I upgrade my firmware to 2.6 but now i want to go back to 1.5 . I was wondering if i format my stick can i get 1.5 firmware back on my psp?

Posted by: HydrosaK at December 11, 2005 11:05 PM

Russell, sounds like you might have a Memory Stick that's not compatible with the Sony PSP. Did the unit say explicitly that it was PSP-friendly?

Hydrosak, no, reformating the memory card won't help you go to an earlier version of your firmware. Please read:

Hi, I just bought a memory stick with 512 megabytes and when I put it into my psp it says it has only 468 megabytes of free space. I'm wondering were the other 44 megabytes went because i havent saved anything onto it yet.

PS : I've already tried reformating the memory card and it still says 468 PLEASE HELP !

Posted by: Jake at January 2, 2006 2:13 PM

That's a classic problem, Jake, and one that makes me wish these companies would actually make 530MB cards so you'd end up with the 512MB available that you expect. The fact is that the actual layout of information on the Memory Stick (card, disk, etc) eats up a few percentage points of the available space and there's nothing you can do about it. When you bought a 512MB stick, it was really just a 'raw' measure: once you have it formatted, add a few necessary folders, etc, it's suddenly smaller. Very frustrating!

Put a SanDisk 1 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo in my granddaughters PSP. Loaded music to it via Media Player. PSP says "No Tracks" and we can't play them. Using Windows explorer, they show up on the PSP and if clicked, Media Player comesup and they play. Any thoughts?

Posted by: George Waterman at January 16, 2006 12:28 PM

Media Player can't sync properly with the PSP, whatever it's telling you. You need to use a different solution. Check out:

I have tried formatting my memory stick pro duo gaming edition in my PSP following your advice and each time it tells me that 'there is no memory stick inserted'.

Posted by: Suzanne Dearing at February 10, 2006 2:22 PM

Gerry, no. The PSP is not a PC. :-)

Suzanne, it sounds like your memory stick is not PSP compatible. Can you take it back to the store and replace it with one that explicitly says "PSP compatible" on the packaging??

Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 10, 2006 2:33 PM

It states on the packaging that it is 'compatible with sony PSP' and even has a picture of a PSP on the packaging. It also states 'magicgate' at the bottom of the packaging. What is this?

Posted by: Suzanne Dearing at February 10, 2006 2:42 PM

Hmmm... sounds legit to me. Maybe it's just a bad individual unit?? Are you sure you're putting it into the PSP properly and getting it 'seated properly on the connector?

Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 10, 2006 3:09 PM

What is the procedure for getting it seated properly on the connector?

Posted by: Suzanne Dearing at February 10, 2006 3:17 PM

Take it out, then carefully line up the edges and push it back in. Push firmly on it. That should, theoretically, do it.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 10, 2006 10:11 PM

I some how accidentally formatted my memory stick, which is stupid, I know. However, is there any way I can get the data back?

Posted by: Bruce at February 16, 2006 12:25 PM

There are some commercial apps out there that can help recover data from a memory stick or other flash device - just Google "memory stick recovery software" - but I can't say whether they'll work or whether they'll be worth the money. Good luck, and if you do try one, do pop back and let us know how it went!

Posted by: Dave Taylor at February 16, 2006 4:57 PM

I have a similar issue with a 1 gig card. When I format it using the format tool on the psp, it will only recognize 236 MB of space. The real kicker is when you look at it with a USB card reader XP recognizes at as a 1 gig card. Any ideas?

Joseph, sorry to hear about your troubles, but I have to say, that's exactly why I don't recommend or encourage people to use unknown hacks. :-(

James, I surmise that your memory stick device isn't PSP compatible, which is why you're having all these problems. I'd take it back to the store and/or replace it with one that explicitly says "PSP Compatible".

Posted by: greg at May 31, 2006 6:34 PM

I have purchased a Sandisk MS Pro Duo card, which I know is PSP compatible.
512MB

I am getting the error where it says no disk is inserted whenever I try to format. I have tried to format both in windows, and on the PSP. I'm assuming it's a bad unit.

For those people who think your memory card is less than you bought, you are wrong.
Windows measures size differently to sony, which is why it is less than it advertised.

The PSP read it again after a few trials, but only for a few minutes.
I tried the memory stick, a 32mb one, that came with the unit and it was read just fine.

Thank you, in advance.

Here's a non-technical (mechanical) question.
My son managed to insert his PSP memory stick into

I have a problem with my mem card as well. i have had this card for about a whole year now and it never gave me any troubles until today. I wanted to format the memory stick because there was an unaccounted space of like 300 MB on my 1 GB stick. I checked all the hidden files and every folder to see where it has gone, and the psp even told me that i had 1 gig. I could not find what the 300 MB was. So when I formatted it, it gave me an error message and the format was incomplete. When I checked my music/vid's, they were all gone, but it wasn't back to the orignial state. when I linked the stick to my computer, it only shows 2 hidden files, and that's it. There is no folders for music or video, or any sort, plz help me out.

I think it's probably safe to say that "Dave" isn't actually here as he hasn't posted a reply since May 7th 2006. I too am having the same problem with my sony pro duo 2gig stick (putting it in the PsP but it not recognising that there is a stick in the PsP, with the orange light continuosly flashing). Oh and if Dave does see this post, yes it is compatible with my PsP (I thought I would add that as that seemed to be your lame answer to the few you answered). Aside from that seeing as there are so many people here that are all having exactly the same problem, there has to be a site out there that can actually solve our problems.

Posted by: Icey at April 26, 2007 4:48 AM

Icey, didn't your Mom teach you that being pleasant gets better results than being hostile and sarcastic?

Understand that there ARE compatibility issues with memory cards from third party providers, even if they say that they are PSP compatible. Further, there are cards that are just outright mislabeled: go ahead and Google "counterfeit memory cards" and you'll see what I mean.

It's also the case that the quality control on memory cards / sticks seems to be lower than on SIMM and DIMM-style memory that you put into a computer: I have heard many, many stories of memory stick duo devices simply failing after a few days, weeks or months, never to be salvaged.

My general suggestion: pop out the memory card and put it in again. Plug your PSP into the wall. Try to let the PSP format the card. If it fails, take the card back to where you bought it and ask for a replacement and/or call up the manufacturer and ask for a replacement.

There's no magic "up-up-down-left" sequence that lets you override a flakey memory card, sorry.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at April 26, 2007 8:49 AM

Saying that my method didn't get better results pretty easy to argue when I was the 1st person you replyed to in a year but thats beside the point. Indeed I agree that there can be compatibility issues with THIRD party products, even though the main complaint has been about the sony pro duo, and again I agree that fake memory sticks can also be a problem. Saying that your general suggestion is to "take it back if your method fails" was never mentioned once in this whole page (not very general to me). If anyone else is reading this post, I suggest scanning the official forums on the playstation website as they are continously active. There range of information vast to help you sort your problem.

Hi Dave, wondering if you could help me out here....I have searched and searched the web for a helpful answer and have came up empty...though it seems hundreds of people seem to be having the same prob.

THE PROB:: I plug my PSP into my computer wanting to put music MP3's on my SanDisk 2GB memory card. In "my computer" it recognizes a removable disk e: but when I click on it it says it is not formatted and asks if I would like to format it. I click yes and it acts like its starting for format and goes through the motions and when its done it says it was unable to format. I found some of your other instructions on formatting it using the PSP in the setting tab, it says it formatted but my computer says differently when I retry to put on music. This is very frustrating I had all my games and everything on it that are now gone and its still not formatted.

Another thing I just got a new phone a motokrzr k1m and its memory card does the same thing, so I cant get music on it either. So im pretty sure the memory cards are good...and am even surer that the problem lies with a setting on my computer and was wondering if you could think of anything. Thanks much

Easy there, champ. The reason I am not helping each individual person is because I've already answered and the answer is always the same: if you're putting in a good Memory Stick Duo into your PSP and it's not seeing it, something's wrong with your PSP and you need to get it serviced. I have a couple of articles on how to go about that here too:

Good luck!

Posted by: soldierp at October 2, 2007 10:21 AM

Hi Dave i have a 2gb sandisk memory card for my psp and have just recentley upgraded my firmware to 3.52 m33-4 custom firmware so i can play downloaded games, i have downloaded a lot of games lately and when i put them into the 'ISO' file of my psp they are supposed to show up. but only some show up and then again only some work when i delete all my games off and put only 1 on it works but then i have to format my memory stick to make the next game to work.
its like when i use over 1gb of memory the games just stop showing up, what do you think? should i get a sony memory stick?

Thanks,

hi,

i have a 32mb memory stick and another 2gb one. the 32mb works just fine, but the other doesn't.

when i insert the 2gb memory stick the little memory stick light on my psp starts flashing and doesnt stop. when i try to format it, my psp says "there is no memory stick inserted". it also says on the memory stick packaging that it is for use with psp and that it is high speed.

ive noticed the little connectors on the back of my 2gb stick are shorter than my other 32mb stick... does this have anything to do with it?

Regards,

Dave I just got a new PSP, and although I am preety good with computers I am finding some of the terms and concepts of this device preety challenging. Could you please give me a detailed intro of the device, I would like to take the system apart both software wise and hardware wise, but I am not sure I will be able to put it back togather again :) and the price tag was preety high for a risky learning by practise method :) Terms like firmware, homebrew and others of the sort are really mind boggling for me, I would like to have an upto date system, even downloaded a upgrade from the sony site but during upgradation the sstem gives me an error saying that the memory card cannot be read. I am really confused about this device. Please help, I would appretiate it if you could kindly email me the neccesaties :) Thankyou.

I had an older M33 (3.71, I believe) and everything worked fine... I could play ISOs and CSOs directly from the "memory stick" menu under games. I used to put the ISO files in the ISO folder (root of the memory stick).

After installing 3.90 M33 through a newbie program, the psp couldn't read the files inside the ISO folder. Navigating to "Games, Memory Stick" in XMB, I get the message "There are no games."

Hmmm Dave, heres whats happend..
I had a 1GB offical sony psp Pro duo memory card in my psp, i recently purchased a 4GB pro duo sony Memory card, the card worded fine, for a few days... :( then after about 3 days it would'nt recognise the memory card, then it was hit and miss, it would recognise it, then it wouldn't, all my files showed as corrupted and now it says there isnt a memory card inserted, i take the memory card out and insert it again and it tells me it cannot be read, and that i need to format it, so i try to format it through Home>Settings>System Settings>Format Memory stick
It will then ask me two questions which i answered both yes, then when it tried to format it started to do it, then a second later it told me 'There is no Memory Stick inserted'
Do you think the Memory stick is faulty?
I am unsure if it is genuine, the Sony logo and magicgate logo are kinda fuzzy and a little off straight on the card,
Please help Dave

When I put in the memory card, it does actually read it, but it shows 0KB space... but the key here is that it reads it. I assume it can't figure out the size because it isn't formatted properly, but when I try to format it, it starts and then fails saying there is no memory stick. I know the memory stick and the PSP are working perfectly because I have another card (1GB) that works flawlessly (I'm trying to swap up from 1GB to 4GB) and the 4GB card works flawlessly elsewhere. Also, I have had the 4GB card work in this PSP before but I recently upgraded the firmware on the PSP and started putting movies on my PSP and am looking for more memory. To me, this seems like a PSP firmware issue... is tere any way I can get this card to work?

Hey guys, press select button on your psp and choose memory card from that options, then it wil read your card..

Posted by: legend at July 19, 2008 3:19 PM

step 1. On the main screen of your psp press the "select" button

step 2. on the options go down to "USB device" and select "memory card".

step 3. Exit out of it by pressing "select" button

this is for CFW 3.90 m33.

Hi , I am having an issue with my psp memory stick pro duo 8 gb I got it from Memory Suppliers, My issue is almost every time i place any data on the stick either from my pc or through the psn, it becomes corrupt and registers as being hundreds of gigs , I can only put 1 item on my card, just 1, If for instance I place a video on it, and then a game, the game becomes corrupt, , this is beyond infuriating, I have not done anything to cause these failures and the stick is brand new!!

How do I format my Sony PSP

Posted by: shuq at November 23, 2008 12:55 AM

Hi Dave

I've read that you are the best person to consult with techy matters. My psp is always hanging, and the home page will not display the icon for the games in the memory stick. Do you why is this happening?? What I usually do is remove the memory stick then insert it back...after a while, it hangs up again. Do you think reformatting the mem stick will solve this?
thanks

Hi Dave,
the problem with my PSP 3004 is same as tze, wander and kimble torres..cant find a solution to his..please guide !

i got a 8gb MS Pro Duo from an authorized dealer n the packaging looks original. my PSP shows 7760 mb free and can format the disk too. However when running it using my card-reader on my Windows XP, it shows data capacity as 3.58GB only !! i was shocked to c this and showed it to the dealer again on his pc and it was 3.58Gb there as well and he was shocked as well. he exchanged it immediately and v checked the card at the store itself and it showed 7.something data capacity and then i returned home satisfied. but then i put it in my PC n it again showed as 3.58GB. however my PSP shows correct data capacity. i reinstalled memory card reader driver on pc but still the same problem. Please guide. livemafia@gmail.com

Posted by: Akshay at December 6, 2008 2:38 PM

continued..

also my PSP and the dealer used the MS Pro Duo card directly (dealer used a VAIO) but i need to connect it to a MS Adapter for my card reader..is there any possibility that the problem is due to the adapter?

Hi all..

I've just spent 12hours trying to solve the problem of my memory stick, it wasn't possible to access it on my PSP and it said " There is no memory stick " or something like that and it would not format under anyway but I DID solve the problem....

To solve this you simply have to:

1- get a memory card reader and connect your memory card to your computer (you can try to connect directly with your PSP but I don't know if it'll work).

2- Go to "Start".

3-Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage" and it will popup a window called "Computer Management".

4- Click on "Device Manager". On the right there will show a list and collapse the "Disk drives" tab.

5-Right click on your memory stick ( For those connecting through the PSP it will say "Sony PSP USB Device") and choose "Properties".

6- Go to the "Policies" tab and check the "Optimize for performance" and click "Ok".

7- Go to "Start" and open "My Computer".

8- Right click on your memory stick and choose "Format" and a window will open.

9- Make sure "Fat 32" is selected under "File System".

OPTIONAL: You can name your memory stick.

10- Press "Start" and wait a few seconds and you're done!

Have fun! ;)

For everyone having trouble about reading the max on the Pro Duo with it connected with a USB reader, connect the PSP directly to your PC using the connector on the top and the cable that came with your PSP.

I had the same problem "I Buy a 16GD for my PSP when I connect to my computer the D Disk whant to format it 4GD what should I do."

But when I connected my PSP directly the full 16GB was read...well.. more like 15 and change.. but your PSP will work just like the USB connector and you can transfer files to and from without any software.

Hope this helps

Posted by: bobbydigital at March 30, 2009 5:50 PM

I think some of the problems, if not most.. are from the USB reader itself. try connecting with your devices directly.

Posted by: antoni at May 2, 2009 3:06 PM

YO!

I've been using my Sony mem stick since I got my PSP. (note; my stick wasn't brand spanking new. I work at a games store and silly people leave their mem sticks when they traded in PSP's. So I have a one gig USED stick)
When I got it (About 10 months ago) i did all the necessary adjustments to the stick (format, blah blah), and set up proper file layouts and stuff. It worked well. I've moved music and pics and stuff onto this stick and it's all worked fine. I could never be bothered moving movies onto it until a few days ago. I downloaded and trialed a few Video converters specifically for PSP's and after testing out one and moving to the stick, it worked nicely. Since that video i've been searching for things to move onto it.
The thing is, I never had a suitable cable for my PSP to connect it directly to the computer, and since my mem stick wasn't bought, I don't have a card reader for it. Instead, I've been using my digital camera to read the card and move files, which has worked perfectly.

Also, I just managed to get around to updating the firmware to the latest (5.50).
So tonight, I had to move my stick around quite a bit to test which videos worked and which didn't, and when I tried to read the stick from the camera, the computer wouldn't pop up the autoplay. After restarting the comp it was still the same. I put the stick back into the PSP and it wouldn't read anything. Says there's no stick inserted. Needless to say, I'm kinda lost. It was literally working about 5 minutes ago, and now the stick can't be read on either the PSP or camera, and I'm thinking something must have corrupted. And right now i'm thinking it's the firmware that won't read my stuff, but me not being a guru, I wouldn't know if firmware would do that at all.
Just to make sure it wasn't my PSP dying on me (onoes, FFVII Limited PSP D: )i inserted the stick which belonged to the camera, and it worked fine. All the images opened. So I know it's the stick, but I don't know how it could have stuffed itself.

I really need a solution, If there is one. I have a Crisis Core save game which has me on level 57 :( I'm so bummed, if anyone has a solution, please email me at kneenar@gmail.com
And if your solution works I will send cookies to your house and shower you with (virtual) gifts... >____>

~~Kneenar Halp :(

PS: Sorry for the long-winded message, I tend to ramble , especially when I'm flustered :(

I'm trying to download FFVII off the PSN store on PSP. I payed the $15.99 or whatever, and it starts downloading. The orange memory stick light is flashing the whole time, and it works fine. Then it gets to about 80% and the orange light goes off. It says it's still downloading yet it stays at 80%. So I left it for an entire night. Checked it the next day, it still says 80%. It happens each time at around 80% and i've tried numerous times. I have a 2GB memory stick and the game itself is only 1326MB. I have the latest system software and everything as well. I tried restarting it and going into the GAME folder. it says "CORRUPTED DATA". I'm quite frustrated because I bought the game from the Sony Playstation PSP Store Site thing, I downloaded it from there...and it does not download. I do not know why and it's really really annoying. I want to know whats going on or if I'll need a new PSP which I will be very upset about.

Please write back.

Dave, I am through the same problem than all later people posts above. I recently bought at BestBuy an Memory Stick Pro Duo Mark 2 16Gb that should work perfectly in my PSP Slim, as it is original Sony and is MagicGate certified. But the PSP corrupts the memory stick as soon as I attach the MS when it is loaded with more than 4Gb of data (PSP ISOs). After the corruption I must format (again) the MS either in PSP or PC (cardreader). I really don't know what to do anymore, as I already updated CFW from 5.00 M33-6 to GEN 5.50-B as a possible solution. My next step is to Format Flash 1 and restore settings. I appreciate your advice, as it seems you got a solution for previous people.
Thnaks a lot man.

I've recently downgraded it back to 5.00 m33 but it still doesnt work. I've checked everything and realized that the MagicGate has turned from "Supported" to "Unknown". Is this MagicGate "Unknown" the cause that I'm unable to play any games? Videos, music and pictures work though.
Would appreciate your answer very much. thanks

My classmate gave me a 4gb memory stick and I tested in my psp. I viewed the information and it says it's unknown. When I plugged it a computer, I can't see any of the folders like ISO, Game, Music when there's suppose to have one.I downloaded a game and I make a folder for ISO but when I opened my psp, I can't see the game I just downloaded there. Any help? What is the problem with the psp?

email me at erikagarcia_1996@yahoo.com

Thanks
