How do I format my Sony PSP Memory Stick?

I got a Sony PSP two days ago and when I got it, it said I had 30 MB. Now it says that I only have 900 KB (and this is after I deleted everything, my games and songs, so it should have a clear memory)?

I then tried putting MP3s on it but it won't accept any of the songs I drag into my music folder. It always says that I don't have enough memory (this is also when I deleted everything so my PSP has a clear memory)

Help!

Dave's Answer:

I get a lot of questions from people who don't fully understand how to work with the PSP Memory Stick devices, and I believe that this is exacerbated by the fact that Windows really likes to hide files from regular users when browsing devices.

As a result, what you're seeing is that you have files that aren't being shown in a regular Windows (or Mac, for that matter) file view, but are clearly still on the Memory Stick.

Or, a simpler possibility: you're dragging things into the trash, but you aren't actually emptying the trash and deleting them from the device!

In any case, I recommend that every so often, and particularly when you first buy a memory stick, reformat it on the Sony PSP so that anything added by the memory stick manufacturer is removed, along with any hidden files you might have accidentally added.

You can format any size Memory Stick Duo in the Sony PSP by doing this:

  1. Push the little HOME button on the bottom left of the face of the unit.
  2. Use the arrow keys to move to the SETTINGS area, then move the up and down keys until you get to System Settings.
  3. Once you are there, click on the "X" button and scroll up and down as needed to find Format Memory Stick. Click on "X" again to select that option.
  4. The Sony PSP will now confirm that you want to reformat the memory stick (which removes every file and game save thereon, of course): choose yes and it'll format in just a few seconds.

Now you have a pristine new Memory Stick to work with and should have no problems with music, photos or other material you might seek to copy onto your PSP.

Dave,

Do you know if I am better off buying my Sony PSP in the UK (where I live) or the US where I am off to in 5 weeks time, also can I charge any USA bought PSP in the UK & vice versa, I assume yes through the travel chargers?

Many thanks,

Alan.

Dave Taylor said, on September 7, 2005 6:07 AM:

Alan, I'd buy a UK PSP if I were you. Overseas versions are cool until they break and then you're in a very tough position.

Dave Taylor said, on December 12, 2005 6:25 AM:

Russell, sounds like you might have a Memory Stick that's not compatible with the Sony PSP. Did the unit say explicitly that it was PSP-friendly?

Hydrosak, no, reformating the memory card won't help you go to an earlier version of your firmware. Please read:

Hi, I just bought a memory stick with 512 megabytes and when I put it into my psp it says it has only 468 megabytes of free space. I'm wondering were the other 44 megabytes went because i havent saved anything onto it yet.

PS : I've already tried reformating the memory card and it still says 468 PLEASE HELP !

Dave Taylor said, on January 2, 2006 9:43 PM:

That's a classic problem, Jake, and one that makes me wish these companies would actually make 530MB cards so you'd end up with the 512MB available that you expect. The fact is that the actual layout of information on the Memory Stick (card, disk, etc) eats up a few percentage points of the available space and there's nothing you can do about it. When you bought a 512MB stick, it was really just a 'raw' measure: once you have it formatted, add a few necessary folders, etc, it's suddenly smaller. Very frustrating!

Put a SanDisk 1 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo in my granddaughters PSP. Loaded music to it via Media Player. PSP says "No Tracks" and we can't play them. Using Windows explorer, they show up on the PSP and if clicked, Media Player comesup and they play. Any thoughts?

Media Player can't sync properly with the PSP, whatever it's telling you. You need to use a different solution. Check out:

Dave Taylor said, on February 10, 2006 2:33 PM:

Gerry, no. The PSP is not a PC. :-)

Suzanne, it sounds like your memory stick is not PSP compatible. Can you take it back to the store and replace it with one that explicitly says "PSP compatible" on the packaging??

Suzanne Dearing said, on February 10, 2006 2:42 PM:

It states on the packaging that it is 'compatible with sony PSP' and even has a picture of a PSP on the packaging. It also states 'magicgate' at the bottom of the packaging. What is this?

Dave Taylor said, on February 10, 2006 3:09 PM:

Hmmm... sounds legit to me. Maybe it's just a bad individual unit?? Are you sure you're putting it into the PSP properly and getting it 'seated properly on the connector?

Suzanne Dearing said, on February 10, 2006 3:17 PM:

What is the procedure for getting it seated properly on the connector?

Dave Taylor said, on February 10, 2006 10:11 PM:

Take it out, then carefully line up the edges and push it back in. Push firmly on it. That should, theoretically, do it.

Dave Taylor said, on February 16, 2006 4:57 PM:

There are some commercial apps out there that can help recover data from a memory stick or other flash device - just Google "memory stick recovery software" - but I can't say whether they'll work or whether they'll be worth the money. Good luck, and if you do try one, do pop back and let us know how it went!

James, I surmise that your memory stick device isn't PSP compatible, which is why you're having all these problems. I'd take it back to the store and/or replace it with one that explicitly says "PSP Compatible".

For those people who think your memory card is less than you bought, you are wrong.
Windows measures size differently to sony, which is why it is less than it advertised.

So when I formatted it, it gave me an error message and the format was incomplete. I think it's probably safe to say that "Dave" isn't actually here as he hasn't posted a reply since May 7th 2006. I too am having the same problem with my sony pro duo 2gig stick (putting it in the PsP but it not recognising that there is a stick in the PsP, with the orange light continuosly flashing). Oh and if Dave does see this post, yes it is compatible with my PsP (I thought I would add that as that seemed to be your lame answer to the few you answered). Aside from that seeing as there are so many people here that are all having exactly the same problem, there has to be a site out there that can actually solve our problems.

Dave Taylor said, on April 26, 2007 8:49 AM:

Icey, didn't your Mom teach you that being pleasant gets better results than being hostile and sarcastic?

Understand that there ARE compatibility issues with memory cards from third party providers, even if they say that they are PSP compatible. Further, there are cards that are just outright mislabeled: go ahead and Google "counterfeit memory cards" and you'll see what I mean.

It's also the case that the quality control on memory cards / sticks seems to be lower than on SIMM and DIMM-style memory that you put into a computer: I have heard many, many stories of memory stick duo devices simply failing after a few days, weeks or months, never to be salvaged.

My general suggestion: pop out the memory card and put it in again. Plug your PSP into the wall. Try to let the PSP format the card. If it fails, take the card back to where you bought it and ask for a replacement and/or call up the manufacturer and ask for a replacement.

There's no magic "up-up-down-left" sequence that lets you override a flakey memory card, sorry.

Icey said, on April 26, 2007 3:54 PM:

Saying that my method didn't get better results pretty easy to argue when I was the 1st person you replyed to in a year but thats beside the point. Indeed I agree that there can be compatibility issues with THIRD party products, even though the main complaint has been about the sony pro duo, and again I agree that fake memory sticks can also be a problem. Saying that your general suggestion is to "take it back if your method fails" was never mentioned once in this whole page (not very general to me). If anyone else is reading this post, I suggest scanning the official forums on the playstation website as they are continously active. There range of information vast to help you sort your problem.

Hi Dave, wondering if you could help me out here....I have searched and searched the web for a helpful answer and have came up empty...though it seems hundreds of people seem to be having the same prob.

THE PROB:: I plug my PSP into my computer wanting to put music MP3's on my SanDisk 2GB memory card. In "my computer" it recognizes a removable disk e: but when I click on it it says it is not formatted and asks if I would like to format it. I click yes and it acts like its starting for format and goes through the motions and when its done it says it was unable to format. I found some of your other instructions on formatting it using the PSP in the setting tab, it says it formatted but my computer says differently when I retry to put on music. This is very frustrating I had all my games and everything on it that are now gone and its still not formatted.

Another thing I just got a new phone a motokrzr k1m and its memory card does the same thing, so I cant get music on it either. Same problem, psp telling me there's no memory stick... still no solution, by the way, why you keep asking Dave Taylor? its pretty clear he cant help anyone around here...

Dave Taylor said, on September 6, 2007 2:34 PM:

Easy there, champ. The reason I am not helping each individual person is because I've already answered and the answer is always the same: if you're putting in a good Memory Stick Duo into your PSP and it's not seeing it, something's wrong with your PSP and you need to get it serviced. I have a couple of articles on how to go about that here too:

Good luck!

Hi Dave i have a 2gb sandisk memory card for my psp and have just recentley upgraded my firmware to 3.52 m33-4 custom firmware so i can play downloaded games, i have downloaded a lot of games lately and when i put them into the 'ISO' file of my psp they are supposed to show up. but only some show up and then again only some work when i delete all my games off and put only 1 on it works but then i have to format my memory stick to make the next game to work.
its like when i use over 1gb of memory the games just stop showing up, what do you think? should i get a sony memory stick?

Thanks,

hi,

i have a 32mb memory stick and another 2gb one. the 32mb works just fine, but the other doesn't.

when i insert the 2gb memory stick the little memory stick light on my psp starts flashing and doesnt stop. when i try to format it, my psp says "there is no memory stick inserted". it also says on the memory stick packaging that it is for use with psp and that it is high speed.

ive noticed the little connectors on the back of my 2gb stick are shorter than my other 32mb stick... does this have anything to do with it?

i have a psp bought in china with a 2gb memory stick and games on file (ISO). now i messed things up by trying to reformat the memory stick because a lot of the games didnt work. i have tried putting games on but all of the folders on the memory stick have gone, so they just take up memory without being able to use them. How do i make my psp recognise the games now? PLEASE HELP!
Thanks
