How do I fix the driver for my Samsung YH-820 MP3 Player?

I have a samsung yh-820, but i brought it off e-bay, about 5mnths ago, so i have no warranty and it's gone wrong. I turn it on and it says ' connect to pc and repair with recovery utility' only problem is that it isn't recognised by my computer. I've contacted the samsung company who were very unhelpful and suggested i try a new usb cord, but i know that it isn't the usb becuase it charges fine and this is on the same cord. And it constantly reloads when plugged in. I really don't know what to do, do i have a right to send it back to the seller or not or do i have to pay for repair. I would really appreciate help here if possible

Dave's Answer:

This is a tough one because while I'm a big fan of Samsung, I have to say that their web site is terrible for finding any support information or downloads. Search support for the YH-820 and it doesn't even indicate that's a Samsung product (though if you can figure out how to get into the FAQ area, there are a number of matches).

Fortunately, Google knows all, so I spent a bit of time digging around to see what I could find, and I have found a number of useful FAQs on the site:

  1. Connecting The YH-820 To Your PC, Driver Installation
  2. How Do I Download And Install The Latest Firmware For My MP3 Player?
  3. I Have To Reinstall The MP3 Drivers Every Time I Plug My MP3 Player Into My PC For The PC To Recognize The Player.
  4. YH-820MC - Manual Installation Of USB Driver

I think that #3 here is going to offer you the best possibility for solving your problem.

Having said that, it is possible that you have a bad USB cable, even if you are seeing it charge properly. I have certainly heard from Sony PSP owners about weird connectivity problems that were alleviated by buying a new USB cable. (and no, it doesn't entirely make sense to me either!)

Good luck with your MP3 player and I hope you can get it all working properly!

I have the same MP3 Player and had that same problem. You need to hold down the forward button while connecting your USB cable. You will see a green arrow in your task bar. When this happens you are connected to the YH-820. Now you can use the repair software. The other thing that may be wrong if you still can not repair it is the memory is bad. In that case you need to send it out to CVE Inc. 75 Seaview DR. Suite 100 Secaucus, NJ 07094. Phone: 1-800-231-5552. I hope this helps you out.

what can be done and seems to work for me is to make sure that the power is not in when plugging in the usb, the usb should provide the power for the mp3 player therefore there is no need to have that plugged in if u r not charging.

I have a samsung YP-U2J and have similar problems connecting to USB in my laptop. The player comes with a CD that checks whether your computer has a Windows Media Player 10 and a USB 2.0 port. I put in the CD and it said something like, after running the checker, "complete. enjoy your music". But I can connect at my PC at work. So i went and checked my USB ports on my laptop and they are working fine with other products and are 2.0 as is required by my mp3 player. i have come accross other people having similar problems. what could it be the cause?

Posted by: ferouzmj at December 27, 2006 2:35 PM

I bought 2 Samsung YP-U2J MP3 players at christmas. One works great, but the other has the same problem as described by ferouzmj above, except it won't connect to any computer in my house. It connected the first time, to download music, and it plays the music fine, but after the first time, it would never connect again, even on the same USB port. I think this must be a manufacturing defect, because I experienced exactly the same problem after exchanging for a new unit (twice) at the store where I bought it. The only visible difference between the one that works and the ones that don't: The date code. The good one is 2006/10, and the bad ones are all 2006/08. If anyone knows a solution, I'd love to hear it, but I think right now I'm ready to move on and get something from a more reliable manufacturer.

I just bought the YP-U2J and had the same problems including trying a new one. The problem is Windows Media Player 11. You have to rollback WMP to version 10 for the Samsung unit to work beyond the first connection. I'm still trying to figure out if they are going to improve the driver or firmware or whatever, so WMP 11 will work. Samsung says the technology in the YP-U2J will not work with the Xbox so maybe it's the same with Vista type software, hope not.

I have a samsung yp-u2j mp3 player i was charging it and took it out now it is showing a locked picture and i don't know how to unlocked

Posted by: Lori at April 16, 2007 9:37 PM

I have a yp-u2j MP3 player that doesn´t get started at all. When I turn it on it starts to build MLDB or WLDB (which I don´t know what it means) and then it turns down immediately. After that it remains like dead. I tried many things but nothing seems to work. I had it for lees than a year and the device is in good shape.
I´ll appreciate any help regarding this issue.
Thank you,

Guille.

Hi, I think that MLDB means 'Music Library Data Base'.
I have the same issues with my yp-u2j. It's not recognize by any computer. The Date of manufacturing is 2006/04.

Posted by: The Topu at April 26, 2007 9:21 AM

i have a yp-u2j also, and it rarely connected through the USB port, so i barely used it. once i figured it out, it worked fine. now it won't even power on, and won't even show the dead-battery signal. i charged for a number of hours, but still nothing. any ideas?

Hey! I had the same PROBLEM with my YH-820MS/XAA.
All i did was download the Utility Software, formatted the YH and then i went straight to UPGRADE FIRMWARE. Once you are ready to upgrade firmware, be sure to have one already downloaded from Samsung's Web Site. After that, it all seemed preety cool.
Anyways, if you have a local Samsung Repairing service nearby, DO NOT HESITATE to take it to them. Trust me, no matter how much they charge you for the repair (if they do) IT'S WORTH IT!

GOOD LUCK!
