How do I find product manuals online?

I need a manual for an Olympus c-3030 zoom camera. How can I obtain one? Also, how do I turn the flash off when taking pictures?

Dave's Answer:

This looks like a good opportunity to talk about how to do sophisticated Google searches, I think, because if the information you seek is online, it'll be at the Olympus web site.

So, to start, any time you want to search a specific site and you know the domain, use the search pattern site:domain. In this case, the search should be constrained to site:olympus.com. (You can also restrict searches to just a top level domain too, which is most helpful. Use site:gov and you'll search all the indexed data from every US Government Web site online)

Since you're seeking information on a specific product, type in the product name too: C-3030. As you can see, the search for "c-3030" produces 41 matches:

Results of Google Search for '3030' on site Olympus.com

Now that you have a small enough list of matches to peruse, it's time to use your eyeballs to skim the matches and see what does or doesn't look worth investigating further. Also pay attention to the URLs (web site addresses, shown in green on each match) to see if any categories of value pop up. We're looking for something like 'manual' or 'info' or 'prodguide' or similar.

C3030
Here's one interesting page: C-3030 Zoom Features

None of these are great matches, unfortunately, but it's worth mentioning that you can always further constrain searches by adding an additional parameter of "manual" or "guide". Done simply, the search would now be site:olympus.com 3030 guide or, if you wanted to get really fancy, site:olympus.com 3030 (manual|guide|instructions)

Even with all this, however, it doesn't appear that Olympus has its product manuals online. Instead, it's time to visit the Olympus site itself and dig up the information on how to order a replacement manual. This can be done by visiting the site...

At which point we learn that Olympus, in its zeal to organize its many disparate businesses, has done quite a disservice to the consumer. The North American Olympus site isn't at olympus.com at all, but at olympusamerica.com. Blech! Time to redo our search, and sure enough, the second match on the search site:olympusamerica.com 3030 is ... ta da! A C-3030 Zoom product support page that includes downloadable instruction manuals!

There are two options here. You can download the Quick Start Guide or the full C-3030 Zoom Instructional Manual.

A very interesting example after all! One of the lessons here is that while you may think you know the domain name of the company, sometimes it's worth visiting the site for a little bit of detective work before you begin your Google adventures. The other example is that companies who split up their site across multiple domains risk significantly confusing customers and make information harder to find, not easier.

I recently purchased a Magnavox 8.5" Portable DVD Player, MPD845 from Walmart but there was no product/operating manual inside and at first I didn't think it would be a bother, but now I kinda wish I had it. I have searched all over on the internet and can not seem to find one. How can I get a product manual for my portable DVD player?

Thanks
Chris
