i got an mp3 player for christmas and i got a cd that came with it to download 5 free songs. and i'm trying to copy cd's on my windows media player and put them on my mp3 player, but it doesn't work, what do i do?

That's probably because you have incompatible music formats. You've probably downloaded WMA (windows media, audio) format files, which is what the Media Player prefers, but your player is, obviously, an MP3 player. You need a conversion program if that's the problem: go to download.com and search for 'wma mp3 converter' to see your options. Good luck!

You're right that mp3 players work quite differently and that what works for one might not work for another. Generally, though, they seem to work with Windows Media Player on the PC, or they have their own music jukebox application. If you have a specific mp3 model, post it with your help request and we'll see what we can do!

For one thing, I just wanted to say, to get music on your mp3 player, you MUST have software (like iTunes), on your computer to do this. You can go to the website of the maker of your mp3 player (like Apple) and software will most likely be available. Of course, the software downloaded has to be compatible with your mp3 player. For instance, with iPods, you download iTunes. Usually iTunes will ask you automatically if you want to download all the music from your computer onto your iPod. Click yes. If it doesn't work, you can go into the file menu of iTunes and go down to "import." You find the song you want on iTunes and click on it, then click ok. Thats all you have to do.
Now you need to connect your mp3 player to your computer using the specific cable (usually hooks in the front of the computer). I don't know how the other programs work (although they are probably similar), but if you wait for a moment, then iTunes will automatically begin to "synche" (switch music over to) the iPod with the music on your playlist. You simply wait for the mp3 player's screen to say its ok for you to disconnect it, and YAY, you have music.

If you need additional help, feel free to email me, but make sure you put a subject, or I might think its a SPAM email (but I'll probably read it, so don't worry too much).

I won a free MP3 from a Pepsi cap and downloaded it from iTunes I think. However, I cannot seem to play it on my MP3 players or cut it to an audio CD. I can only play it on the PC to which I originally downloaded it. When I try to convert it to another format, it dies with some cryptic error. Is this by design? I bought a GPX MP3 player and joined Yahoo Jukebox Unlimited. Yahoo says it doesn't recognize the MP3 player to download songs directly to it and yet it does show it on the left panel of Jukebox unlimited. Any ideas why this won't work?

...for downloading music to a mp3 player go to your media player site. Rip the cd to your computer, then click on the Sync tab, and click shuffle music, here you can drag selected songs to the column on your right, after everything is synced it will automatically rip the songs to your player. I just kept at it and got it as I'm sure you will too. I listen to Beyouce regulary, and changes it by going to the sync tab again, click on shuffle and choose what I wanna hear and let the computer handle it's business.

I was reading waht your wrote on a simple question of puting music on a cell phone mp3. I love the part where you were upset that they didn't tell you it was a cell phone. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE. yOU ARE TOTALLY WRONG. To put music on any mp3 device download the music, copy it and send the song to the device which should be recognized in my computer. THAT'S IT. My 12 year old daughter is a master at it. Get lime wire everyone. Free and legal.

How do i download music on my mp3 player

I have a cheap mp3 player (made by Craig). It has always worked and "synced" with my windows media player. Even after downloading limewire music and transferring to MediaPlayer. But now all of a sudden, when I plug it into the USB port, it does not work. At the bottom of the player, it says "mscnnmmc detected", and couple of quick boxes appearand disappear. But it is NOT reading the player even though it detects it. I click over the the sync-section, and it still says "connect a device".
It was working fine up until a few days ago.

Zohe, I don't have one of those to test, but I would imagine that if you start up Windows, launch Windows Media Player, then plug in your Sandisk device, it'll show up in WMP and you can then just sync or drag specific multimedia content onto the unit.

All these different players, because it turns out that it's pretty darn easy to build an Mp3 player, so lots of vendors have done so. The challenge is to get music on them, as you're now learning.

Generally I think you should try to follow a three step process:

1. Start up and get familiar with Windows Media Player. That's the key application that works with just about every non-Apple Mp3 player I've seen and it's free and included with Windows. If you don't have a copy, you can download one from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/

2. To get music, the easiest is to have Windows Media Player (I'll call it WMP from here on in) running then insert a music CD into the computer. WMP should ask you if you want to "rip" or "copy" the music. Say "yes" and it'll make a copy of all the songs that were on the CD onto your computer. Repeat until you've loaded up all the music you want to eventually put on the Mp3 player.

3. Now plug in the Mp3 player and, if your system is properly configured, WMP should "see it" after a minute or so and show you it on one of the tabs as an external device. If it doesn't, most versions of WMP have a "search" or "connect" button that makes it look for appropriate external drives.

At that point, you should be able to either drag selections from your scanned music or "sync" your Mp3 player with the music you've scanned and saved on your computer and it'll automatically copy everything across.

The reason I'm being rather vague about which buttons to push, btw, is because each version of Windows Media Player seems to have a different interface and different buttons and tabs, so it's very difficult to be definitive about this.

I hope that helps. I do have more articles on how to work with Mp3 players here on my site too, so do poke around a bit to see what you can find, and don't forget to check the manufacturer's Web site to see if they have a download area and specific software for working with your Mp3 player too.

I know nothing about computers let alone how to even begin to put music on it. What is needed,equpt. wise, cables ect. along with how, and where to begin to pu ttunes on this thing.

Brian, Tiana, and the rest of y'all: just about every MP3 player on the market (with the notable exception of the Apple iPod) works only with PC computers and requires that you use Windows Media Player to work with it.

I'll see if I can get one of 'em and write up a tutorial on how to work with them, but generally you'll find "Media Player" on your PC's START menu. Launch it, then plug in the MP3 player, and you should be good to go!

i can't copy photo's from off my pc onto a cd/dvd,

Tayler and others - if you aren't seeing that the computer magically knows your MP3 player is plugged in, launch Windows Media Player and see if THAT recognizes the device. Sometimes that's what it takes, in my experience.

stevie and atwauna, please note that some vendors have players that don't work with ANY program at all, not Windows Media Player, not iTunes, not even their own software. Instead, you just have to literally drag and drop the content you want onto the device as a hard drive, and that's it. Crude, for sure, but try that if you're not having any luck with the other possibilities detailed on this page.

I have just got a Hitachi MP3 player. Following the instructions, I connected it to my computer and opened a 'Removable disk' then simply dragged the desired music from my computer into the removable disk. Job done. However, I can find the music on the MP3 player but it will not play. When I press play, the screen says 'unauthorised'.

When reconnecting the MP3 to the computer and the 'auto play' box comes up, I have selected 'Play' but only get the windows media player screen up. I cannot seem to get the download media wrights I was hoping for.

How can I authorise my music to play?

Not sure how to get your device to work and don't have any instructions? Here's generic advice: search on Google for the name of your product + "user's guide" or "manual". If that fails, your product's manual might not be available online, so then you can use generic instructions.

It's either going to work via custom software from the manufacturer (check their site for "download" links), via Windows Media Player (plug device in, launch WMP, see if it shows up) or it'll show up as an external drive (plug it in, go to "My Computer" and see if it shows up. It might be E: or similar). If the latter, drag and drop .mp3 files or .wma files into a "music" folder or similar.

If it works with WMP you're in luck: just use that to sync and manage your content.

Toni, the Sandisk probably works with Windows Media Player: try plugging in the mp3 player, then launching WMP then seeing if the program sees the player. If it does, you can transfer music onto it directly from within WMP.

To get music from iTunes, the only solution will be if the iTunes music is in mp3 or wma format (rather than the Apple-preferred AAC format). Pick a song, chose File > Export, and see if it's in the right music format. If it is, import it into Windows Media Player and you should be good to go. Theoretically.

Good luck! If all else fails, take it back to Radio Shack, as they have liberal return policies.

I don't know what zamzar is, but there are a ton of different video encoding systems (called "codecs"). Try converting it into an mp4, for example, and see if that works. Also worth noting is that on the ematic.us site, they say that the players should "include Conversion Software so you can play MP4, AVI or MPG format videos..."

We purchased a "Hello Kitty" 50009 Digital Music Player for our daughter for Christmas. The device supports MP3, WMA and WAV formats. The problem is, nowhere in the instruction manual included does it tell you how to record music from a CD or from computer (as in iTunes) have treid cut and paste, and drag and drop, and although drag and drop places it in the "record" file of the G drive when connected, it does not transfer the files and you cannot listen to the music. How do we record music from a CD or from iTunes to this device. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
