How do I download songs to my MP3 player?

Hi Dave, I just got a brand new Samsung D500 and I want to put music onto it via USB cable, but it won't work. How do I do it?

First off, a disclaimer: I don't have a Samsung D500 so I can't test out what I'm going to explain here. However, just about all the MP3 players on the market work in the same way - and it's how the Sony PSP works too, in fact - so let's just talk about the general solution for downloading music onto an MP3 player.

The first step is to see if there's any special software available from the vendor to help the process along. With the D500, for example, go to the Samsung Web site and click on "Support", then type in the product name. I typed in D500 and then choose "TV, video and audio". Wrong choice: no matches. I tried again with "Computer and related products" and got a list of three possible matches, one of which is your product, the SGH-D500.

Turns out that the D500 is a mobile phone, actually, not a simple MP3 player at all (wish you would have mentioned that, btw!) but I figured it out. Turns out that there's a raft of different user manuals available on the D500 download center page, and, clicking on the Software tab, it turns out that there's software you can download from Samsung too, including "Samsung PC Studio PC Sync (ver 2.0)" which is probably what you'd want.

Generally, though, if you don't have any software or can't find anything for your MP3 device (which, as you can see, includes cellphones!) then you should be able to copy across MP3-format audio files by:

Hooking up the device to a USB connection on your computer.
Going through the settings on your device to find a "USB CONNECT" or "USB MODE" option. Some devices do that automatically when they detect power on the USB cable, others (like the Sony PSP) require you to do it manually).
Your computer should now automatically detect the device, probably showing it as a removable hard disk. Both Macs and Windows XP computers do a very good job with this, older operting systems can be more challenging (e.g., Windows 98, MacOS 9).

Now you just need to rummage around a bit and figure out where music files should be stored. One way to do this is to pay for one song to be downloaded from a service, if that's an option, then see if you can find where it's stored on your MP3 device and drop other songs into the same place. If that's not an option, then just put a few songs in different directories and see if your device can find it once you disconnect and try to play a song or two.

Brian, Tiana, and the rest of y'all: just about every MP3 player on the market (with the notable exception of the Apple iPod) works only with PC computers and requires that you use Windows Media Player to work with it.

I'll see if I can get one of 'em and write up a tutorial on how to work with them, but generally you'll find "Media Player" on your PC's START menu. Launch it, then plug in the MP3 player, and you should be good to go!

Tayler and others - if you aren't seeing that the computer magically knows your MP3 player is plugged in, launch Windows Media Player and see if THAT recognizes the device. Sometimes that's what it takes, in my experience.

stevie and atwauna, please note that some vendors have players that don't work with ANY program at all, not Windows Media Player, not iTunes, not even their own software. Instead, you just have to literally drag and drop the content you want onto the device as a hard drive, and that's it. Crude, for sure, but try that if you're not having any luck with the other possibilities detailed on this page.

Hi Dave.
I have just got a Hitachi MP3 player. Following the instructions, I connected it to my computer and opened a 'Removable disk' then simply dragged the desired music from my computer into the removable disk. Job done. However, I can find the music on the MP3 player but it will not play. When I press play, the screen says 'unauthorised'.

When reconnecting the MP3 to the computer and the 'auto play' box comes up, I have selected 'Play' but only get the windows media player screen up. I cannot seem to get the download media wrights I was hoping for.

How can I authorise my music to play?

Not sure how to get your device to work and don't have any instructions? Here's generic advice: search on Google for the name of your product + "user's guide" or "manual". If that fails, your product's manual might not be available online, so then you can use generic instructions.

It's either going to work via custom software from the manufacturer (check their site for "download" links), via Windows Media Player (plug device in, launch WMP, see if it shows up) or it'll show up as an external drive (plug it in, go to "My Computer" and see if it shows up. It might be E: or similar). If the latter, drag and drop .mp3 files or .wma files into a "music" folder or similar.

If it works with WMP you're in luck: just use that to sync and manage your content.

I bought my kids an sandisk clip mp3 player. I have tried everything I know possible to get the music downloaded but nothing is working. In the box with the mp3 player there was a disk that said you had to upload and register before you could us the mp3 player. I have tried this and nothing is working. When I bought the mp3 player the lady and radioshack said that I should also be able to download my music I have purchased from itunes to the mp3 player. Please help!! This is important. My son is going on a long trip with his school and I want him to be able to enjoy his music. Thanks,

Toni, the Sandisk probably works with Windows Media Player: try plugging in the mp3 player, then launching WMP then seeing if the program sees the player. If it does, you can transfer music onto it directly from within WMP.

To get music from iTunes, the only solution will be if the iTunes music is in mp3 or wma format (rather than the Apple-preferred AAC format). Pick a song, chose File > Export, and see if it's in the right music format. If it is, import it into Windows Media Player and you should be good to go. Theoretically.

Good luck! If all else fails, take it back to Radio Shack, as they have liberal return policies.
