How do I disable my Sony Vaio BIOS startup chime?

I am re-asking the question entitled "How do I disable my windows startup sound?" I think that the question was not phrased well enough to understand the problem. And, I'd also like a solution to this problem if you have one.

The noise to which I'm referring is the one at the initial Sony Vaio splash screen. It plays *before* the LILO boot on my dual machine. So, it must be somehow hardwired into the system boot.

Dave's Answer:

I admit, the first time I received your question, I thought you were talking about the Windows startup sound, hence my article Disabling the Windows Startup Sound, but knowing that it's actually something with the hardware from Sony tells me that the solution lies in the BIOS, the Basic Input/Output System, that underlies the hardware itself.

Since I don't have a Vaio of my own, I can't get too far down the road, but checking with Sony produced this useful answer:

"We're sorry for the difficulties you're experiencing with the Sony startup sound or chime. The jingle that is heard immediately after the VAIO logo is the Sony startup sound, specific to the VAIO Notebook. This is not a Windows file. You will be able to disable it in the system BIOS.

"Please visit our support area and find article 327525 to review the information to disable the Sony startup sound."

Here are the many, many steps they detail:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. At the initial Sony screen, press the F2 key to enter BIOS setup.
  3. In the BIOS Setup window, press the RIGHT ARROW key until Advanced is selected.
  4. In the Advanced menu, press the DOWN ARROW until Speaker Volume: is selected.
  5. Press the ENTER key.
  6. In the Options window, press the DOWN ARROW or UP ARROW to select 0.
  7. Press the ENTER key.
  8. Press the RIGHT ARROW key until Exit is selected.
  9. Press the ENTER key.
  10. In the Setup Confirmation dialog box, press the ENTER key.
  11. If the sound is not disabled, continue this procedure.
  12. Restart the computer.
  13. At the initial Sony screen, press the F2 key to enter BIOS setup.
  14. In the BIOS Setup window, press the RIGHT ARROW key until Advanced is selected.
  15. In the Advanced menu, press the DOWN ARROW until Show VAIO Animation Logo is selected.
  16. Press the ENTER key.
  17. In the dialog box, press the DOWN ARROW to select No.
  18. Press the ENTER key.
  19. Press the RIGHT ARROW key until Exit is selected.
  20. Press the ENTER key.
  21. In the Setup Confirmation dialog box, press the ENTER key.

Hope that helps you and others turn off that pesky Sony Vaio chime!

I think Sony may have stopped the use of the logo-noise.

I just got a new FZ and it doesn't do it, and the BIOS doesn't even have an option for it.
