How do I disable MusicMatch Jukebox?

I have MusicMatch Jukebox on my computer and it starts automatically. (Windows XP) I do not like it. I much prefer Microsoft's Windows Media Player. I've tried to switch Windows Media Player to the default, and it will work when I open specific music or audio files (and I do tell it to open "all files of this type with this program"), but it goes back to opening MusicMatch when a new file comes along.

Dave's Answer:

The problem you're seeing is because MusicMatch Jukebox actually installs two additional programs that run on your computer but don't have any sort of graphical interface. Here's what Yahoo's MusicMatch team says about it:

When Musicmatch Jukebox 10 is installed, mim.exe and mimboot.exe are installed on your system. The mim.exe is a GUI-less application that provides much of the functionality needed by the Musicmatch Jukebox as well as improves the start up time of Musicmatch Jukebox. The mimboot.exe is a smaller application used to start mim.exe. Once mim.exe has been started the mimboot.exe application exits automatically.

There are several advantages of the mim.exe application. With very few resources the mim.exe application allows the Musicmatch Jukebox to launch faster. mim.exe will continuously observe your configured Watchfolders and update the library to reflect added and changed tracks even when the Musicmatch Jukebox is not running. Also, when configured to do so, mim provides the capability to auto-launch Musicmatch Jukebox when a portable device is attached to your system.

If these are not desired functions you can disable these processes by editing the registry. You should only attempt these changes if you feel comfortable making registry changes. It is highly recommended that you back up the relevant keys before making any changes. After making these changes, mim.exe will only start when you launch the Musicmatch Jukebox. You will need to edit the registry again after you close the Musicmatch Jukebox to disable the mim.exe process. Currently there are no other ways to disable these functions.

To prevent mim.exe from starting when you log into your OS:

- Open regedit
- Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

- Remove the value with the name MimBoot.

To terminate mim.exe when you close the jukebox:

- Open regedit
- Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\4.0\MainApp

- Change the value for "ShutDownMIM". Set it to 1

Personally, I think it's reprehensible that MusicMatch installs these sort of secret background programs that you can't disable without becoming a Windows hacker and potentially risk breaking your entire operating system. Shame on them for not having an uninstaller script!

Hope you can get this working. Good luck!

I want to remove MUSICMATCH Jukebox from my XP. My son tried to remove it but was interupted and shut off the computer midway thru. Now whenever I turn on Internet Explorer about 12 error boxes pop up and I have to "OK" out of them to remove them from the screen.
Can you help me?
Thanks,

Re your comments about editing Registry MusicMatch values. It would have been nice if you would have included an example of what removing the value constitutes. Does it involving editing out the entire sentence/paragraph or some numeric following the referred to registry entry?

I had a problem with MusicMatch Jukebox also. Whenever I put in a cd MusicMatch would start. So I went to options in Windows Media Player and made sure all the file types were selected, then I restarted my computer,I then quickly opened Windows Media Player before MusicMatch Jukebox started ,and this fixed the problem.I will probley have to do the same thing each time, if I ever use MusicMatch Jukebox again.I hope this might help some of you that are haveing the same problem.

I "uninstalled" MusicMatch Jukebox last week to reduce files and processes on my computer. Now I get the MIM.exe error on close which brough me here on a search. I'm so mad at MusicMatch Jukebox right now, I will NEVER use their product for sure after this. Why? I "uninstalled" their software, or so I thought I did, so it should be GONE. Someone needs to class action sue them for this one. It came with my new Dell laptop - I don't want it!

Music Match is Satan incarnate. I encountered the same problems with removal of it (and it popping up time and again) and worse...it automatically continues to install several files by musical artists that I have not chosen, as well as it's like jukebox directory-- onto my other music programs, and mp3 player even though I want it to stop. When I called Dell they wanted to charge me for software support...disgusting, they put this damn program on my computer and then they want to charge me when I need help getting rid of it. The only solution I can think of is to downolad shareware like Smarty Analyzer which allegedly gets rid of even hidden components of a program that you deleted. Good luck all.

satan incarnate? that's funny! :)
i'm having the exact opposite problem. i love mmjb and i can't get it to STAY after it's downloaded. it will flash on for a millisecond, and then it's gone. i'd be willing to give up windows media for mmjb. HELP??!?

had musicmatch great!started to download new mm but was interupted.now i cant get into my music files

Posted by: jeff robinson at August 28, 2006 2:57 PM

I loved mm until I downloaded version 10. It won't initiate - the icon flickers and doesn't open mm. cannot get it open with Start/Run either.

I removed mm through control panel and downloaded again and again... same results...PLUS not working, when its installed it stops my xp system from shutting down properly...

Also, when I look into File EXpress, the folder of MusicMatch is still there even though it doesn't show up on my list of programs...

I've e-mailed mm several times with not answers...

I would appreciate advise on this.....

Thanks, Bill in NC

Dave:

Thanks for your helpful post about the sneaky MusicMatch Jukebox use of the Windows registry.

That MusicMatch provides no easy way to disable this is even more reprehensible, as you say.

I am sending an email to Michal Dell, of Dell Computer, complaining about this very issue. Maybe Mr. Dell needs to spend some time reading the postings on your site about this issue. Pathetic that a man as rich as Michael Dell thinks he needs to stoop to such sneaky tactics.

The MusicMatch Jukebox application on my Dell computer is wasting 135 MB on my C: partition.

There is no entry for MusicMatch in my Add or Remove Programs list, and the Dell technician can only offer the registry hack as a way of closing mmtask.exe so I can delete the entire MusicMatch directory from my C: partition. I refuse to mess with the registry.

I am reluctant just to delete everything else except mmtask.exe, in case this causes me a problem at Windows NT boot time.

Regards,

Hi there,
Is there a way to detect how my ability to play music files has been disabled while logged into a website that offers songs.
I've been able to play the songs until recently and apparently my computer has been tampered with which disables this function.
Thanks

I'm trying to uninstall my non-functioning mmjb (version 10), and using add/remove doesn't work at all; when I press change/remove, the display just flashes for a fraction of a second. I'm not having problems with it functioning as a default player; it doesn't start automatically or anything--in fact, it wont launch at all, it just prompts an installer page and stops there. Thanks for the help.

This Dell MMJB has gotten out of hand. Yahoo sneaks after you want to upgrade and before you know it they want you to transfer any audio/media files with a newyahoo.com account set up for you to log in to tour Dell version MMJB. It's distasteful, trickery. Now I don't want anything to do with Yahoo. It worked fine til the trickery came into upgrading the Dell's version of MMJB.It is sickening the way Yahoo operates in helping someone less skilled with computers upgrading this JB so Yahoo can be there with open pockets and manipulate you into a Yahoo.com account. Vultures preying on the new masses for money. Who can you trust anymore. Yahoo is asking for trouble and any computer manufacturer that deals with conniving practices of YAHOO,will get less sales.Dell has got to know about this and anybody buying dell should say what they don't want factory installed in the computer they will buy.I can't believe that Yahoo turned into a snake.

I have MMJP and have had no problems with it until i had to reformat my computer due to a virus. When I reinstalled MMJP i can send music to my playlist but cannot burn it, I have sent questions to technical support but get no reply. everything else works but i cannot burn anything, starting to get the xxxxx. I paid for all future upgrades about 4 yrs ago. very frustating when you cannot talk to technical support

This has got to be one of the most frustrating programs I have ever come across. I found it on the driver CD which came with my Logitech mouse and decided to install to see what it was like. I was not that impressed and tried to uninstall using its own uninstall app (It does have one called, typically, unwise.exe). In this instance that file name is particularly apt because it deleted its own CD driver file but must have left some references behind in the registry; because when I rebooted I got driver errors on both my CD drives. I tried the recommended procedure of uninstalling and reinstalling the drives but to no avail. When I tried to install the drivers in hardware manager I always got error 36 (missing or corrupt driver). And to make matters worse I now didn't have a CD drive available to restore the driver file from the original CD. Ultimately my only option was to reinstall the entire operating system (XP Pro - SP2) from a boot CD. So the lesson's been well and truly learned; and I will never, ever use this companies products again.

Here's another wonderful thing that mim.exe does.

When I want to remove my USB hard disk (WD Passport 160) and ask the "Safe Remove" gizmo in the System Tray to unmount it, it says it can't because it is in use! Guess who is using it?! Right! mim.exe

Thanks very much for obtaining this info from Yahoo! and posting it.

I've been having worlds of trouble with this Musicmatch program, and now, after reading comments posted here, I'm actually frightened of it. This morning I tried to delete it from my computer and after an hour of fiddling with it, decided to just let it be for the present time. It's not only 'stolen' all of my music files from Windows Media, it's interfering with the speed at which I can work in other programs as well.

Class-action suit? Where do I sign?

I never had a problem with MM and when i install programs I use clean sweep to remove all traces. There are many progs avail and some freeware. Use them to eliminate tell tail signs of programs.

Hi,
I'm having a problem cancelling my subscription of musicmatch. I was just charged a yearly fee of $71.00 that I wasn't aware of. I searched the terms of service for how to do this, I followed the instructions. When I log back into the account, it's still telling me my subscription is valid until 2008. I disabled the PC, but I'm not confident that it's cancelled. Has anyone else cancelled their subscription or is there a customer service # to call to be sure?

Dear Dave,
I am facing a problem while trying to install logitech's wireless mouse that came free with the program for MusicMatch Juke Box and some games. I had also forgotten to uncheck the box given on the 2 items which came with it. Somehow I found I could not continue the installation and had to abandon it. The whole process was stucked at 99% of installation and I had to get out of it. In abandoning I did a Alt/Ctl delete to stop process. And the message prompted on the screen was that an error had occured while set up....due to 'remote procedure failed.'

As I do not wish to continue further with the program and to uninstall musicmatch juke box I had excess on the Add/Remove button. But was highlighted from Uninstall Shiled with this message that :The log File 'c:\program Files\MusicMatch\Music Matchjukebox uninst.isu' is not valid or the data has been corrupted. uninstallation will not continue.

What should I do to uninstalled. Could you kindly help me in the necessary steps to do an uninstall on program? Greatly appreciated.

I have always used Window Media Player and never had problem. One day I thought I would like to see what kind of things I can do with MusicMatch Jukebox, tried it, and did not like it. Then I found all the musics on my PC have been automatically converted to Jukebox. I did have to try several things and get frustrated, but evetually found that if I just select any song and right-click to get property box out and change the property to Window Media Player, then all other songs are all automatically switched back to Window Media Player too. Hope this tip helps.

I hate it, too... talk about part of the conspiracy!.. I used it to burn and then used up my five free burns.. now unless I upgrade to a paid version my burning speed is reduced several fold!.. how absurd.. so I went to delete it in add/remove programs.. and got a message saying it was in use, citing a particular musicmatch file ending in something like mmdg.exe... so I went to ctrl/alt/dlt and went to processes, and terminated that one. Then I was able to delete musicmatch without problems. Now I've found myself here trying to permanently delete those two extra files that make me unable to play music on my itunes... I can right click and go to properties like the above poster said to play that particular song, but it doesn't affect the others around it! In fact it did the first time, and then that just went away.. I'm not about to right click and properties every song I want to play, lol.. these hidden processes from musicmatch have been slowing down my computer severely, I realize now.. if I find a way to get them out then I'll post back here.. has anyone had success with that program mentionned here above that's free and goes in to remove hidden components of programs?

Posted by: Andrew at May 14, 2007 1:02 AM

I also love Music Match. But I have to say that I really don't like the fact that mim.exe uses 100% of my computer resources when I first contect to the Internet each day. I have to just wait for about 20 minutes until I can use the computer.

The burning of CD's in MP3 format is really fast on my system (I'm just using the free version).

I did a Google search for "mim.exe" and found your site. Thank you for the great information!

Pretty much a carbon copy problem. It's driving me nuts. You can't just re-install from the disk as the old version just keeps stopping at 99% and you can't download it anywhere.

Going to MusicMatch isn't a help, Yahoo bought it out (and is telling me it will happen Aug 1, 2007 - a month from now, huh?

Installing/upgrading to the current version from Yahoo doesn't work either. It adds a second, different entry to the Add/Remove Programs List.

I can manually delete all the old Music Match Folders and track down the DLL files even beat the registry to death with a hammer... but will that finally get rid of this crap in my Add/Remove Programs list or leave it there forever.

Oh how I hate bundled software. When are computer manufacturers going to realize it causes way more problems than it's worth in payments from scummy software publishers?

Posted by: I hate MusicMatch at July 3, 2007 10:10 AM

I purchased two version of Musicmatch at a retail store. first it was 8.0 and later 8.2 and they both worked very good until Yahoo purchased Musicmatch.

Ever since Yahoo took over Musicmatch it has been nothing but trouble.

I tried fixing the problem via their e-mail customer support and they couldn't help me fix the problem. I let them know how frustrating it was not been able to use the program after I paying for them, but they didn't care, they already had my money and that's all it mattered to them.

SCREW YAHOO AND MUSICMATCH!! I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM THEM EVER AGAIN.

Now HP suggests a 40 step repair requiring geek knowledge that could destroy the whole computer if done wrong. It's an old computer, I guess and has too many problems, time for a new one, The printer is not recognizing it anymore, either. My friends are useless. There should be phone support, especially when you have purchased 6 hp products over the years, one of them just over a year old. I think it's time for a Mac or a Sony. Hey Dave,
I used MMJB literally for years putting music on my computer and just recently FINALLY unistalled it (the right way I might add with registery deletions included)something I had been hesitant to do for fear of actually LOSING the music that was in there BECAUSE itunes (which I'm currently using) did NOT seem to be able to find some of the MMJB music and thus did not seem to add these cuts to it's library??? Does this make sense? and then the question: did I lose the music that was installed in the MMJB library over those years via cd WHEN I UNINSTALLED it?? sure hope not and appreciate any reply you might have time to make. I have been trying to get rid of the Music Match files that insist on STAYING in my computer. I got it out of the add/remove place. still an Icon on task bar..how I finally got it off I do not remember. I called DELL tech and they cannot help cause I only have Hardware Warrantee I paid an extra $200 for! Did tell me it is another software conflict! But, could not tell me what software conflicts it is. Ir ran my Registry Mechanic and it corrected all files. Ran all security programs I have..no virus. Your instructions about changing the registry files is a bit too confusing to this old gal. I too found out YAHOO owns Music Match now. I use Yahoo in addition to my Outlook Express...how do I contact them?
LAWDY I need help. I sure do not want to go thru another Reinstall that takes me two weeks to get all back right again. I know this problem with Music match has caused all the erractic behavior with this Dell PC>
