How do I delete an America Online (AOL) Screen Name?

I want to set up a new America Online (AOL) screen name for myself, but the system's telling me that I already have the maximum number of screen names. How do I delete one so I can create a new one?

Dave's Answer:

This process is actually fairly similar to the steps needed to add a new screen name. Let's go through the steps, though, so you can see what I mean.

First off, log in to AOL and choose Account Settings --> Screen Names. This gets you to a screen that looks like this:

AOL Screen Names

Notice on the right side, the list includes DELETE a Screen Name: that's what we want.

Click on the delete link and you'll promptly get:

AOL Delete Screen Name Confirm

Make sure this is really what you want to do then click Continue and select the screen name you want to delete. In this case I'm deleting Dave in Space:

AOL Delete a Screen Name

Choose the right name, click Continue again, and a second or two later you'll see this final window:

AOL Screen Names

That's all there is to it!

ok my mom deleted aol and i stil used my screen name so it charged her about 400$ i used it so much....i deleted the screen name(from aim) but now im worried that my friends will email me on that screen name and charge us more money...how do i delete that email adress without signing on that screen name, because we don't have aol anymore?

Posted by: kayla at August 9, 2005 8:26 PM

Kayla, if you shut down your AOL account and aren't logging in to it any more I don't see how they could be billing you any more. I'd call their customer service center if it's an ongoing problem...

Your instructions seem simple, but WHERE do I find aol's "account settings" button to follow your simple steps.

thanks

Posted by: craig at August 11, 2005 11:05 PM

Craig, on the Mac version of AOL, at least, the "Account Settings" is an option on one of the pull-down menus on the top menu bar. It's on the menu that has the name of the app (e.g., "AOL")

Posted by: linds at March 16, 2006 1:52 PM

Linds, you can't. I kid you not. I don't really understand WHY AOL hasn't implemented a 'delete AIM screenname' capability, but even the documentation states it just can't be done.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at March 16, 2006 10:09 PM

I was trying unsuccessfully to either delete the aim email account or hide it. This little mail box window just popped up one day on the upper-left corner of my screen and I have to close it each time I sign on. To my knowledge, I don't actually have an aim email account, but AOL wants me to click the box, sign in, and fill out the form to start it up. I have absolutely no interest in doing this and would just like to stop that little mail box from popping up whenever I sign on. Do you know of a way to do this???

Posted by: lambert at March 23, 2006 4:30 PM

lambert, if you can't remember your password or security question, there's no way for AOL to properly verify that you're the owner of the account, so you're probably out of luck.

Also, I can't sign on AOL with an AIM screename but it's not vice versa since my other screenames are AOL-made but can go on AIM. Is there anyway i can "move" that screename from AIM to AOL since I can't make that screename again with AOL? Thank You.

Hi Dave, I hope you can help me...I've tried just about everything.
For the past 2 months I haven't been able to delete any screens on my AOL account, and yes I know the the primary screen name cannot be deleted, it's the others that I can't delete.
I go through the proper steps that I've done in the past and when I get to the second page where I would usually click on delete or cancel, only the cancel button is outlined, blue and clickable. The delete button is outlined but not clickable, the sentence written there just runs over it, in fact if I highlight the page its not visible at all but the cancel button is left out and not highlighted.
I hope you understand what I just wrote..lol
I've called aol and nothing worked, I even asked around on the aol help message boards and nothing worked that was suggested there.
Hopefully, maybe you can help me.
Thanks, Alessia

Just finished reading all the comments dating back to Aug. 2005. It seems to me that everyone should run as far away from AOL as possible! I am also trying to delete a screen name from my account but continue to get an error saying the service is not available. How convenient for AOL! I won't even try to call them because the customer service I have been receiving lately from many companies I do business with is miserable and an insult to every consumer. We don't deserve this! And AOL will probably try to talk me into paying for their service again! Sorry, Dave, for venting! If you can, please let us all know why AOL does not want us to delete screen names. Thank you!

Posted by: martha at November 28, 2006 3:36 PM

Dear Dave,
When I started my new AOL Service in 2005, I thought that it was the best ISP Service ever. Then, a few months ago I decided to upgrade my Service with faster speed through another ISP Service. So you see, I paid for both the other ISP Service with Broadband and AOL as well. Then I found out about the free AOL service so I signed up for it to use along with my Broadband Service. Now that the AOL Service is free to me, I can no longer delete or change (Not My Master Screen Name of course) but none of my other six screen names. I think that because the service is free to many of us now, AOL has blocked us from getting into our screen name page, and that because a lot of us want to get to that page so badly, we might just decide to sign up for the paid service which will provide us with full access to all it has to offer for the price. I never thought that they would be giving away free AOL Service, but when they did, I saw no reason to continue paying for two ISP Providers. If I have to pay to have my unwanted names deleted or changed, then I will just have to block out unwanted online buddies instead. Please if you can, try to find out if what I have written is part of the reason why many of us (AOL Customers)
no longer have access to delete or change our Screen Names. I truly need to know the Answer, and I am very Desperate to find out too.

Thank you,
B. D. Wms

Do you have to reinstate aol to delete unwanted screen names? The procedure you described does not work now for reasons others specified,, eg error message saying not in service

AOL BOARD REPOST:

Ok, here's some background:

Sometime early 2006 I called and tried to downgrade my AOL service in leu of moving.

A reduced rate plan was chosen and a timeframe to revert given.

I called back way before the time was up to revert.

"We have no record of this, but would you like this slightly higher plan that will ADD a year to your service?"

Not really, but I guess if I want my SN's and such then I'll have to.

Nov/Dec 2006 I try to delete an unwanted SN but all the software showed in the 'Screennames/names' list was the currently logged SN.

Got irritated after weeks of continuously trying and called customer service.

The automated system says I'm a free member and can't get help on the phone(self DC's).

By now I should have STILL another 6-9 months of payments left, but had tinkered in billing to see if it would let me go free once.

Tried the online helpless desk, confused the person by saying I couldn't access things the same way I wrote above, am refered to two phone numbers.

Both numbers plant me in the same automated thing I calle previously.

I tricked it and said I was paid and after a few other wrong buttons got a live person.

After talking to a brick wall explaining the situation I was refered back to the same online area I'd tried that got me on the phone again.

I have 1 aol account, 1aim account, total of 5 SN's and need to delete one of the aol SN's.

Nothing is working, I'm getting the shaft from both ends and the ONLY other alternative that anyone is offering from aol is this:

'If you desire Live-help, then you can always goto BILLING, signup for any plan, then call us back.'

W W W TTTTT FFFFF

W W W T F

WWW T FFF

WW T F

Of the few times I've ever had to ask for help from AOL, this is by far the worst experience ever. On top of this, I can find NO way arround my issue and every department is sending me in circles. If you have REAL help, then let me know. If you understand my plight, then atleast I'm not the only one. If you're from aol design team or tech support, then I have a place to put this shiny CD and it's not back in my software binder!!!!!

A 7 yr. AOL customer still has serious complaints.
Many - many complaints thru the months & years - are NOT getting me an answer- much less, action.
(1) We are elderly & "PAY FOR" CALL ALERT thru
AT&T but for 6 months & NO SOUND...we can no longer receive those alerts because there is:
" NO SOUND " When I cancelled iTUNES (it never
worked either)---AOL took my sound with it BUT would NOT admit it.
(2) I have been trying for 2 years to get 4 old, unuseable screen names deleted or changed -NO
chance!

I am exhausted but I have more AOL problems that probably wont get attention either!

I am like most of the people who have left comments saying that they are having trouble deleting screennames. I too have the free AOL and think this may be the reason. I've tried to find a contact email address but can't find one anywhere, mostly because I don't have access to it.

You can also request the cancellation of your AOL account through the U.S. mail. Just send your request to:

In addition to that, for account security purposes please provide any one of the following:

The master screen name of the AOL account
The last four digits of the current method of payment (for your security, please include only the last four digits)
The answer to the account security question of the master screen name

To delete your screen name, do the following:

2. Sign in with a master screen name. Type the answer to your Account Security Question, and then click Continue.
3. Under Screen Names, click Manage Screen Names.

4. In the Additional Screen Names box, under Delete, click X ( ) against the screen name that you wish to delete.

AOL is not the best site today way many trolls & stalkers & Child predators. I thought about having aol delete my aol. Worst site ever. All though most people are careful still by reporting they only are cut offline for short times then back online. There is many whack jobs who thinks it's funny to send out e-mails talking about people's kids or using harassment & Sometimes it's the same person but on different accounts. Just sick. I see way many nuts on that site so I really may delete my account. It's worse then any other sites / computer services I been onto.

I finally found the link to delete screen names and it tells me I don't havee access to that site! Very user UNfriendly without paying a monthly fee. I got no help from the person on the line when I called. Very frusterating, unacceptable service.

If you need help learning about how to delete other online accounts I would recommend reading the Entrustet.com Blog.

I currently am an Intern at Entrustet.com, It is a free online service company that provides people with an easy way to pass on their digital assets (facebook, ebay, photosharing, etc accounts) to their heirs when they pass away. We have been compiling a list of how to deal with accounts of those who have passed.

Let me know what you think? This link has information about how to delete a ton of different online accounts:

Hi Dave!
Could you please tell me how I permanently delete an old email address that is in my already deleted file...the restore area? Aol threatens that the address will not be there after 6 months but I have had them in there for over 3 years. I want them gone from the restore area permanently if possible?! Thank you for your assistance!

I have recently discovered that some unwanted people are using my aol email address. They have it listed as their email address but it's mine..What do I do to block them from being able to use it. I pay for my aol they don't and don't have my permission to use any part of it.. Thank you.. Please email me with what to do and send me phone number for aol member services or whomever I need to talk to about all of this. My email is ccaf157@aol.com

Dave, sorry if this question has been covered in the responses, but there were SO many responses on this topic, I gave up trying to read through them all. :)

My question is this: I cancelled my "paid" AOL account and opted for the free AOL account around 6-8 months ago. When I went in to check my account (we are doing our taxes) I noticed AOL has been charging us .84 cents (almost a dollar) every month although we are signed up for the free account. I started to delete my account completely but was alerted that I would lose my email address. I also found that AOL won't let me delete my credit card info (to avoid these charges) -- the only option is to CHANGE this information to another form of payment. Can AOL legally do this -- this is not a free account. I wonder how many people notice this? And is this old news to most people and I'm just one of the few who didn't know? Thanks a bunch.

To delete your aol account OR the sofware from your system .GO to control panel , then find the subject / aol you want to remove , you may have more than one virsion , So the system will scan your computer and show how many virsion you have , high light the one you want to remove . IF you want to instal the same software . go to aol and like new pesron who like to get aol as new member but but >>> it will ask you "new member " or " allready a member " you click on allready a member this way you get rid of the old software and reload new virsion . YOU SHOULD KNOW if you want virsion (9.6 has no Aim ) ( or virsion 10.2 has Aim ) . To remove Aim you GO 2 CONTROL PANEL find and delete the aol virsion (10.2 ) then reinstal aol virsion ( 9.6 ) .
