How can I watch DVD movies on a Sony PSP?

Now that the Sony PSP is out they're now selling UMD movies. Most of the movies I already have in my DVD collection, however. Is there any way that I can copy my DVD movies to a memory stick duo for my Sony PSP? If so what all would I need (cables, software, etc....)?

Dave's Answer:

First off, if you want to watch DVDs on your PSP, you're going to need more than the 32MB Memory Stick that comes out of the box with the PSP Value Pack. You should at least be looking for something more like a 512MB Stick which is going to set you back around $70, unless of course you only want to watch 5-10min videos, in which case the 32MB stick will be fine.

To convert the files from DVD to play on your PSP you are going to need a couple of pieces of software that might or might not be completely legal, depending on how you read copyright and fair use law. Be careful what you do with them.

Your first step is to get the film off your DVD and onto your computer hard drive. Download and install DVD Decrypter, then slip your DVD into the player.

Once the program is installed, start it up, go down towards left and middle area and choose a destination to put the file you're going to create, somewhere where you will easily be able to find it later. And make sure you have disk space - a typical DVD movie is 4-8GB of information!

At the top click the Mode tab, scroll down and select IFO.

Now click the Tools tab, select IFO Mode and make sure that if there's a File Splitting option that it is set to "None." (depends on the version). Then click OK.

Under ther Input window click the movie.

Now click on the the Stream Processing tab, enable Stream Processing, and select your video.

Final step. In the bottom left, click on the silver disc icon with the word "DVD" underneath it. Let the program now do its thing (which will take quite a while), and once it's finished you can move on to the next step.

You now need to change that file on your hard disc to something the PSP can read. If you're using Windows, then download and install PSP Video 9. If you are using a Mac you could try using a program called iPSP.

Now hook up your PSP to your computer using a USB 2.0 cable and click the "USB Connectivity" option in the PSP's main menu. This will allow you to browse the Memory Stick Duo inserted into your PSP.

Run the program you have just installed to convert the file you originally saved on to your hard disk. These apps pretty much run you through the process but if you get stuck using Windows try Getting Started with PSP Video 9. According to this discussion thread the Mac version pretty much does everything for you.

There are just a couple of things you need to consider before you place the video file on the Memory Stick.

Unlike music and picture files, you can't put your video files in the "PSP" folder. Create a folder called "MP_ROOT" and inside that folder create another folder named "100MNV01." That is the folder to which you need to copy your converted video files.

Also, you need to be careful how your video files have been named. Programs like iPSP should properly name your video files automatically, but naming your MP4 files "My_Rocking_DVD.MP4" just won't work. These files have to be named like this: "M4V00000.MP4", you can change the numbers "00000" to fit your preference (like "M4V00027.MP4"), but the PSP is very picky about the file naming conventions.

That's it, you should be able to transfer an entire DVD movie onto your new Sony PSP. Good luck and happy viewing.

Thanks to Ed Ellis for his invaluable help on this question. Me? I don't own any video game systems... :-)

It is now possible to encode files for the Sony PSP device with Nero Recode. Users can now encode any files from their library of non-copy protected personal videos or movies. An illustrated document is available upon request.

How to encode files for the Sony PSP device with Nero Recode:

Connect the Sony PSP with the inserted Sony Memory Stick (TM) to the PC via a USB cable.
Turn on the PSP and start the USB connection in the configuration menu.
Start Nero Recode and choose one of the two options to create Nero Digital files ("Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital" or "Recode Main Movie to Nero Digital").
Add the content you want to convert to your PSP and select the Nero Digital(TM) profile "Memory Stick Video (PSP(R) compatible)"
With the Video button it is now possible to create thumbnails from the exported videos for each title.
Click Next and choose the PSP device in the destination selector
Click on the Burn button. The file will now be encoded in a PSP compatible Nero Digital (TM) file format and transferred to the proper location on the PSP
On the PSP, stop the USB connection and go to the movie section. There you will find your movie.
When copying to memory stick, the format is MPEG-4 ASP.

Posted by: Skippy at November 17, 2006 10:39 PM

look there is a much easier way to do this. First

1. download and instal Magic DVD Ripper. http://www.magicdvdripper.com/

2. Insert dvd into dvd drive.

3. On the output selection in Magic Dvd Ripper select Psp.

4. When movie is finished place movie in 100MNV01 folder in the psp.

Hello Dave, need help please, how can you set it up so the psp video 9 always converts the video file with ENGLISH LANGUAGE, because so far it switches between other languages. Appreciate your advise, thank you.

Posted by: BG SG at March 13, 2007 9:34 AM

I also did what Dave said, Placed movie in K:/MP_ROOT/100MNV01/ which works great. Movie played with no problems.

I got quite a large memory stick so i can place multiple movies on my memory stick.

Example:

K:/MP_ROOT/100MNV01/M4V00001.MP4 = Movie 1
K:/MP_ROOT/100MNV01/M4V00002.MP4 = Movie 2
K:/MP_ROOT/100MNV01/M4V00003.MP4 = Movie 3

In my PSP when i go to Video > Memory Card it only reads Movie 1, yet not the other movie.

Any suggestions?

Hiya I just got a PSP yesterday and read this entry and followed its steps precisely, however my PSP states that the file formate, being MP4, is unsupported by the syste. I have formated my memory card (and it is fairly large 1GB, so now issues with space), and properly converted (and named) the video files and everything however the data files remain unsuported by the PSP's system (or so it says). Any suggestion would be great (e-mail suggestions are better as I only found this site by accident =D). Thank you in advance.

Posted by: Tsukune at September 8, 2007 10:04 AM

Truth be told, I ultimately found the Sony PSP so picky about video formats that I gave up and bought a Creative Zen Vision:W device, which plays everything you can throw at it and has the same screen as the PSP. Oh, and it has "TV out" too, so you can actually watch the movies on a big TV if you have one available (like in a hotel room).

ummm, the converter seemed kinda fishy...mcafee noticed it was chaing a bunch of registries very fast and the installer disabled it's cancel buttons, so i couldn't stop the download if i wanted to. seems kinda fishy, anyone else notice this?

Posted by: Josh at October 10, 2007 12:26 AM

I think this article might be obsolete, and needs a change. As of PSP OS 3.30 there are three directories at the root level of the memory stick: \PSP, \VIDEO, and \PICTURE

PSP Update archive for 3.30

You can simply copy a video file to the VIDEO directory without renaming it as long as it's a playable video file on the PSP.

Posted by: Thomas at January 7, 2008 11:22 AM

I've used the decrypter on a couple of DVDs and it saved them as about half a dozen seperate files. Is this how it should be? I've not had time to convert them with PSP Video 9 yet, but wanted to check that I'm on the right track before I go any further. In your instructions you mention converting the "file" rather than files!

Posted by: Dave G at February 18, 2008 10:28 AM

Okay... this is how you copy to your "new" psp...

Create a folder on your duo memory stick... called "Video" (note - this has to be in the root of the stick, not under a directory). Renaming is not necessary... any mp4 will play without issue.
Reference the below Sony site...

I got Harold And Kumar White Castle. I converted it to MP4 format. It's 1 whole piece. I put it in MN whatever file in the MP_ROOT. It takes up room, i see it in videos on my PSP. But when i want to watch it it says unsupported format.

wtf?

However, when I use the decrypter to move the video files onto my PC I have multiple video files to upload to PSPVideo. How can I avoid this and have just one file?

Plz reply by email....

I transfer video files (mpeg 4) files to my PSP it says corrupted.?

I have recently bought a Sony memory card—not fake. I could play one movie but once I downloaded the 2nd one it did not work just said corrupted data. I removed the first movie n again downloaded the 2nd one it sill says corrupted data.

File size first movie that worked = about 400 mb

File size of the 2nd movie (the one that shows corrupted data) = about 600 mb.

Please help. How can I make this work…???

Additional Details

I am already using a PSP converter PSP Video 9

Posted by: Ekta at June 24, 2008 1:10 AM

CXB PSP Video Converter can do all video conversions from or to MP4. While the image quality is high, the conversion speed is very fast (up to 600%). With the integrated video player, you can convert only the outstanding part of the video by setting up the start time and end time after preview.

Posted by: cxbsoft at June 25, 2008 3:16 AM

I usually use this way to put my DVD movies and music to psp, now share to you.
Only five steps:

Step 1: Download and install Aiseesoft DVD to PSP Converter.
http://www.aiseesoft.com/dvd-to-psp-converter.html

Step 2: Click 'File' menu and 'Open DVD', or directly hit 'Open DVD' button to load the DVD.

Step 3: Select the output file formats.

Step 4: Click the "Convert" button on the main interface to start the conversion.

Step 5: You should create a new file named MP_ROOT under the root directory and then create a file named 100MNV01 under the MP_ROOT file. Put your converted video in the 100MNV01 files and you can enjoy your video on PSP.

Hope it was helpful to you!

Posted by: ailisaone at September 4, 2008 9:11 PM

Wow it took me a while to get this working but it did work in the end, so I will explain again. :)

Ok first you need to convert the DVD you want to put on your PSP into the .MP4 format, the tool I used was "Magic DVD Ripper" they have a free trial on their website so you can test it if you want.

When you are done converting the DVD weather you are using "Magic DVD Ripper" or another program you will have 2 files one is the .MP4 and the other is .THM, both files are needed or you wont have sound.

Ok now insert your memory stick into your computer (Im assuming you have a card reader) and open it. Create a new folder called "MP_ROOT" without the "" now double click on the MP_ROOT folder and create another folder called "100MNV01" again without the "" now double click on the 100MNV01 folder to open it.

Now Copy or Cut and paste the .MP4 and .THM files into the 100MNV01 folder.

and the last step is to change the names of the .MP4 and .THM files to M4V00001.MP4 and M4V00001.THM

For each movie you put into the folder you will have to change the 00001 to the next number like this

For the first video M4V00001.MP4 and M4V00001.THM
For the second video M4V00002.MP4 and M4V00002.THM
For the third video M4V00003.MP4 and M4V00003.THM
and you continue counting up for every new movie you put on the card.

I hope this helps. :)

Posted by: Azirus at September 4, 2008 11:13 PM

Well, this is the most easiest way of doing this. I've read this article before purchasing the PSP and had some of the trouble included in this page. Then I've played around with alot of software and hardware and this one worked the best.

1. Update your psp to firmware ver 5.1

2. Get yourself DVDfab and upgrade it to Platinum. (Yes, there is a fee but it's worth it in the end)

3. Get yourself a proper mem stick duo. I've got the 2gig Sony. It's better to get 2gig +. The cheap 512mb I had gave me the ''data corrupted'' and ''file cannot not be played'' error. I've also noticed that in order for a movie to play correctly you need free space with the movie. I think it uses some of the memory on the card for the sound and movie rendering.

3. After you've installed DVDFab Platinum and opened it, Insert the disk, click on psp in the left hand roll down window, click the next button. Then select configure. Don't mess with the movie quality but do change the Audio quality to 64. Then press start.

4. You could wait for up to an hour or three but when the movie is done, connect the psp with the usb cable and copy/paste all the actual files (not folders) into the video folder.

6. Disconnect the psp either with the back button on the psp or safe remove from wintows.

7. Go to Video on the psp menu, click mem card, click your movie and enjoy.

If you wish to make it a bit more interesting then in step 3, change the setting from ''no split'' to ''split by chapter.'' Then you'll be able to go to any chapter in the movie and search for a specific scene in that chapter.

Well, I hope this works for ya'll.
