How can I fix my HP CDROM/DVD drive glitch

While visiting a friend's office today he asked my advice regarding a problem with his HP 7100 Workstation. He runs Windows XP Professional. The problem revolves around his CD/DVD drive. The hardware manager shows the drive as connected and operating and reading/writing CD-ROMs works fine. However, when a DVD is inserted the drive refuses to even recognize that a disk is inserted ... prompts 'Please insert a disk in drive D:'

I ran the HP On line diagnostics they provide for this machine which tests read and write performance only at CD level and no discrepancies come up. HP does not list a replacement driver on their support site. My guess is that there is some additional software required to get the drive to recognize the DVD feature, but I have no idea where to start looking. Have you run into a situation like this before?

Dave's Answer:

The HP 7100 Workstation is an older machine that didn't ship with XP (which it's now running) so this suggests the machine has been upgraded. What you're seeing is that quite often, when you upgrade Windows, the OS can change the drive letters from the default, which, as you are seeing, causes all sorts of recognition problems.

To change it back:

Right-click My Computer.

Click Properties. The System Properties window appears.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Click the plus sign (+) next to CDROM.

Double-click the CD-ROM name, and click the Settings tab.

Under Reserved drive letters, select M (or the previously assigned letter) from the pull-down menu. Make sure that both the Start drive letter and the End drive letter are the same.

Click OK, Close, and then click Yes.

There are no additional drivers for Windows XP and HP doesn't support the use of XP on this machine, from what I can see. You can find out for yourself by popping over to the HP Support Center and searching on your workstation.

I returned my first drive because after 3 months it would no longer burn cd's. Everytime I try I get a tracking error at around 5-10%.

The behavior is nearly identical to the first drive I bought.

Is HP making crap or am I just completely in the dark on what's going on with the drive.

I went to run the window washer program to clear the drive and reload it but it did not pick it up but instead said it's not formatted? I am using a SONY AW-G170S DVD burner. I can burn -R discs without a problem but whenever I put in a +R disc, the icon changes from DVD-RAM(G:) to CD Drive(G:). When I try to open the drive it gives me the error "G:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." Dave, I have and HP PC running XP. I have installed a 'LITE-on' dvd multi-function drive. It will recognise some movies, but for the most part, it says insert disk or media.
I have Nero, DVD Decrypter, DVD shrink, E. M. DVDcopy, updated codects, and the list goes on. I double clicked on the drive in hardware manager, but no settings tab came up to re-designate the drive. I'm stumped.

I am having the same problem.
Also, my avg free scanner has consistently reported
file: shel32.dll result/infection: change path: C:\windows\system32\shell32\.dll
AND
file: ntoskrnl.exe result/infection: change path: C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

This is in addition to the fact since I bought it about a year ago, a few of the keys would only work some of the time, now working almost never.
the keys and the weird virus scan results i can deal with, but the houdini cd/dvd drive is rather unnerving.

I have just fixed my HP DVD writer 300n by down loading and installing Express Burn (nch.com.au). This is FREE software!!
I have spent 2 days researching and trying different solutions as listed on various forums and NONE WORKED. Did not unplug or replace hardware either.
Then I "stumbled" across free software. I now have a "working" HP DVD Writer and it accepts all types cd-rw, cd-r, etc.
Hope this solution helps other users.
PS I am using XP - SP3.

When i try to insert a copied disc it says "Please insert a blank disc" and suddenly it will give an option to format a disc and if i click yes it will then say that the disc i inserted is not blank. Im running Windows Vista.

Im thinking of buying a new DVD Drive if other option is not possible.

I have an HP pavilion zv6000 notebook running windows xp. It came with a Lightscribe8x DVD+/-RW & CD-RW Combo. I can play or record a CD and play a DVD. Buy when I try to burn a DVD, even though it looks like it is going through the entire process properly, the drive does not recognize any files on the burned DVD. I am using a Memorex DVD-R. I receive no error messages. I have tried slowing down the burn rate to no avail. Any Suggestions?

Hey everybody, I know this is a frustrating problem. Below are the directions given asfan42069, but I made changes where they were needed according to HP. It worked for me and I hope it helps you.

click the start menu
find the search box (located at directly above the start menu button)
type in "regedit" and press enter
you might get a warning asking if you want to open the "Registry Edit"
click yes

now you should have the registry edit program open

double click on "computer"
double click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
double click on "SYSTEM"
double click on "CurrentControlSet"
double click on "Control"
double click on "Class"
double click on "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} it has to be this EXACT file...do not touch the others.

now you should see a list of items on the right side of the window

and there is an item named "lowerfilter" or "upperfilter"

anyway... right click on it and click delete both.

once deleted, open the "device manager". Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run> type in devmgmt.msc and click "run"

Once you are in the device manager, delete the DVD/CD Rom drives.

after you have deleted the drives, click on the "action" menu located next to the start menu.

click on "scan for hardware changes"

Your computer should automatically re-install your dvd drivers and everything should work. It did for me.

Do you have any advice for an external drive that isn't recognized by Windows XP? I disconnected it incorrectly to try to use it with my new laptop that runs Windows 7 but it wasn't compatible. When I connected it back to my PC, it wouldn't read it. The power is connected properly, as is the USB cable, but the drive itself is like a ghost now. I would hate to lose over 150GB of data but I'm not sure what else to do at this point. I can't even figure out how to uninstall the driver for the device. I tried using it the other day and the drawer will not even open I have checked with windows and the have checked the device coming back saying device ok I have de installed it re installed to no avail, I have seen updates but I am nervous as I dont want to aggrivate the problem anymore the LED is on and if it was not for a colleague asking for a mix cd I would not have been aware there was a problem.

when I want to watch a DVD, I get video and sound glitches... sometimes WMP or VLC can't even read the DVD. I get error message.
Once it happened before and I figured out that it was because of a software conflict : I think it was because of Quick Play application, so I blocked this application and since then it worked fine. But now, the problem came back... and the strange thing is that when the DVD driver try to read the DVD, my computer is making a lot of noises, the DVD driver seems to turn a lot more and I noticed that the CPU usage rises up to 50-60%.
Can you help me with this one ?

PS : my computer is an HP Pavilion DV5000, and my system is Windows XP SP2.

I have recently downloaded W7.
There have been some compatibility problems with some of my programmes, but suddenly my DVD/CD players have developed a "drawer-opening" problem.
I have a NEC DVD RW ND-3520A ATA in the tower,
and a HP DVD Writer 940d USB on the desk.

When trying to open the devices, the drawers attempt to open but will not open.

The device manager states that the two are working properly.

Their software is up to date.

I have looked at the connections and they are firm and live.

I would appreciate any assistance to obtain the function of these two machines!
