How can I fix my HP CDROM/DVD drive glitch

While visiting a friend's office today he asked my advice regarding a problem with his HP 7100 Workstation. He runs Windows XP Professional. The problem revolves around his CD/DVD drive. The hardware manager shows the drive as connected and operating and reading/writing CD-ROMs works fine. However, when a DVD is inserted the drive refuses to even recognize that a disk is inserted ... prompts 'Please insert a disk in drive D:'

I ran the HP On line diagnostics they provide for this machine which tests read and write performance only at CD level and no discrepancies come up. HP does not list a replacement driver on their support site. My guess is that there is some additional software required to get the drive to recognize the DVD feature, but I have no idea where to start looking. Have you run into a situation like this before?

Dave's Answer:

The HP 7100 Workstation is an older machine that didn't ship with XP (which it's now running) so this suggests the machine has been upgraded. What you're seeing is that quite often, when you upgrade Windows, the OS can change the drive letters from the default, which, as you are seeing, causes all sorts of recognition problems.

To change it back:

Right-click My Computer.

Click Properties. The System Properties window appears.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Click the plus sign (+) next to CDROM.

Double-click the CD-ROM name, and click the Settings tab.

Under Reserved drive letters, select M (or the previously assigned letter) from the pull-down menu. Make sure that both the Start drive letter and the End drive letter are the same.

Click OK, Close, and then click Yes.

There are no additional drivers for Windows XP and HP doesn't support the use of XP on this machine, from what I can see. You can find out for yourself by popping over to the HP Support Center and searching on your workstation.

Hope this helps your friend get things working!

Thanks to Ed Ellis for his assistance with this problem.

On my HP PC, my HP DVD Writer 640b and my Samsung CD-Rom SC-148A does not allow the drivers to be loaded correctly. After several attempts of reloading and remove these devices,, I still get the ! in yellow in the Control Panel.

Can you suggest what I can do next?

PS. I am running WIN/XP SP2

I have a HP DVD840 It's been working fine for about 3 months and all of a sudden DVDs are no longer recognized. It will read any other type of media.

I'm running XP Media Edition. I was going to try Ed's suggestion above but I don't have a settings tab after double clicking the DVD ROM drive. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Ken, I have had the same issue with both of my drives.

I returned my first drive because after 3 months it would no longer burn cd's. Everytime I try I get a tracking error at around 5-10%.

The behavior is nearly identical to the first drive I bought.

Is HP making crap or am I just completely in the dark on what's going on with the drive.

My HP DVD 640C tray used to open door when turn on aond off. I sent a message to HP and they pushed upgrade. Now the door does not open. When I check property the system says it works fine. I have a blank CD in it which is recognized by DVD Burner.

Hp's troubleshoot is to open using paper clip and I could not. Tomorrow I'll disconnect the Drive and reconnect it again.

Any help is very appreciated

Can CD-ROM drives play/read standard DVD-R discs? While I'm able to see the photos and video clips that I burned to a DVD-R disk while overseas on a WinXP computer...I've been having trouble loading the pictures and videos on my Windows 2000 Dell computer. I have a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-348B, which, in My Computer states is a Stand alone Standard CD-ROM drive.

Last year I even bought DVD's (both +R and -R) to burn slideshows to but my CD-ROM drive wouldn't recognize the DVDs and kept asking to PLEASE INSERT DISK INTO DRIVE.

I'm so frustrated because I've over 1000 photos from a 4 week journey I recently took to Costa Rica and am now unable to even view the pics that I burned to a DVD-R.

Please advise...I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks! Monique@mysticalpoetry.com

I have Nero, DVD Decrypter, DVD shrink, E. M. DVDcopy, updated codects, and the list goes on. I double clicked on the drive in hardware manager, but no settings tab came up to re-designate the drive. I'm stumped.

I am having the same problem.
Also, my avg free scanner has consistently reported
file: shel32.dll result/infection: change path: C:\windows\system32\shell32\.dll
AND
file: ntoskrnl.exe result/infection: change path: C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

This is in addition to the fact since I bought it about a year ago, a few of the keys would only work some of the time, now working almost never.
the keys and the weird virus scan results i can deal with, but the houdini cd/dvd drive is rather unnerving.
Please help.
Thanks

I have just fixed my HP DVD writer 300n by down loading and installing Express Burn (nch.com.au). This is FREE software!!
I have spent 2 days researching and trying different solutions as listed on various forums and NONE WORKED. Did not unplug or replace hardware either.
Then I "stumbled" across free software. I now have a "working" HP DVD Writer and it accepts all types cd-rw, cd-r, etc.
Hope this solution helps other users.
PS I am using XP - SP3.

Hey everybody, I know this is a frustrating problem. Below are the directions given asfan42069, but I made changes where they were needed according to HP. It worked for me and I hope it helps you.

click the start menu
find the search box (located at directly above the start menu button)
type in "regedit" and press enter
you might get a warning asking if you want to open the "Registry Edit"
click yes

now you should have the registry edit program open

double click on "computer"
double click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
double click on "SYSTEM"
double click on "CurrentControlSet"
double click on "Control"
double click on "Class"
double click on "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} it has to be this EXACT file...do not touch the others.

now you should see a list of items on the right side of the window

and there is an item named "lowerfilter" or "upperfilter"

anyway... right click on it and click delete both.

once deleted, open the "device manager". Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run> type in devmgmt.msc and click "run"

Once you are in the device manager, delete the DVD/CD Rom drives.

after you have deleted the drives, click on the "action" menu located next to the start menu.

click on "scan for hardware changes"

Your computer should automatically re-install your dvd drivers and everything should work. It did for me.

Hope I helped you!

Do you have any advice for an external drive that isn't recognized by Windows XP? I disconnected it incorrectly to try to use it with my new laptop that runs Windows 7 but it wasn't compatible. When I connected it back to my PC, it wouldn't read it. The power is connected properly, as is the USB cable, but the drive itself is like a ghost now. I would hate to lose over 150GB of data but I'm not sure what else to do at this point. I can't even figure out how to uninstall the driver for the device. When I run the installation CD, the only file that pops up is the autorun.inf file.

Please help!

Hello ! ^^
when I want to watch a DVD, I get video and sound glitches... sometimes WMP or VLC can't even read the DVD. I get error message.
Once it happened before and I figured out that it was because of a software conflict : I think it was because of Quick Play application, so I blocked this application and since then it worked fine. But now, the problem came back... and the strange thing is that when the DVD driver try to read the DVD, my computer is making a lot of noises, the DVD driver seems to turn a lot more and I noticed that the CPU usage rises up to 50-60%.
Can you help me with this one ?
Thankssss a lot in advance for taking the time to solve my problem !

PS : my computer is an HP Pavilion DV5000, and my system is Windows XP SP2.

Hello!
I have recently downloaded W7.
There have been some compatibility problems with some of my programmes, but suddenly my DVD/CD players have developed a "drawer-opening" problem.
I have a NEC DVD RW ND-3520A ATA in the tower,
and a HP DVD Writer 940d USB on the desk.

When trying to open the devices, the drawers attempt to open but will not open.

The device manager states that the two are working properly.

Their software is up to date.

I have looked at the connections and they are firm and live.

I would appreciate any assistance to obtain the function of these two machines!

Thank you in advance

I have a compaq presario C500 with basic vista W/Optiarc CD-RWCRX880A ATA device. I can view DVD movies on my computer, view photo from a CD, burn pictures from the computer onto a CD disk and vice versa. When I download digital cam video into my computer, and view them via windows Media Player all is well. when I try to burn a DVD , the computer says, insert disk and it will begin the burn. That is far as I can. It keeps saying insert disk. I have used R-, R+ DVD disks and it still says insert disk! Please if you can. thank you much for your time.

Posted by: santiago perales at April 19, 2010 12:32 PM

I am having the same problem as Pratheek. I also have a Compaq Presario C500 series.

My cd/dvd read/write is HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA-4084N ATA device.

It used to burn dvd's nicely. Now, it only reads them, though it will read and burn cds.

I sent this computer back, after having it for one month with the same problem.

They said it was fixed and I really didn't burn many dvds.

What can I do, short of buying an external burner?

our cd drive (F:) keeps on asking us to insert the disk even though the disk is already inserted

Posted by: cheryl at June 11, 2010 10:09 PM

Dear Dave,

I own a HP Pavilion Slimline s3712f Desktop - Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2220 2.4GHz - 3GB DDR2 SDRAM - 500GB with Windows Vista. It’s only 11 months old. A few days ago I attempted to run a game on my computer and I noticed that the disk couldn’t be read. I ignored the issue thinking that maybe the computer was over heated. However, the next day I ran a hardware diagnostic test and windows shows that everything is working perfectly. When I ran an individual test for my disk drive (TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z ATA Device) the test could not begin because it would always prompt me for a disk. I inserted the game (Sim 3), a blank disk, and a DVD—all to no avail.

I deleted the disk drive and rebooted my computer. The computer picked it up and installation was successful. Following some advice I deleted the Upperfilter and Lowerfilter. There was an error starting up my computer so I had to launch Restore. As soon as I boot up my computer and insert a disk, windows prompts me to run the disk—as it should. However, a second later the disk stops working and no matter how many times I insert a different disk, the computer won’t pick it up. I do hear a ticking noise. This is the only error message I received while attempting to run my sims game: File: E:\Caches\China.objectCache, Error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. What does this mean?

It appears that I am not the only person having problems with this particular manufactured disk drive. I’ve read around that people who’ve purchased a pc/laptop with the TTSS corp drive end up having disk failures 4-6 months after the perchance, on average. One post I read indicated that these particular drives are being manufactured with glitches and are still being installed into PCs. I read from another person with the drive—only it’s a Dell laptop—that sometimes the screws might prevent the drive from reading disks, i.e, how tight or loose it is. The person said that after adjusting the screws the drive works. I have yet to open my PC. I’m thinking, maybe the disk drive is somewhat loose and needs some readjusting. Also, it’s been a few months since I last used the drive. Maybe dust has accumulated inside? I inspected the disk I repeatedly try to run. New scratches seem to appear. . . .

Long story short, I would like to know what else I can do to resolve this disk drive issue. If possible, can I replace the disk drive with one that isn’t of the same model?

Thanks in advance!

I have HP 6710B laptop WinVistaSP2. Suddenly it fails to read CD/DVD. The drive just remains active and all processes goes slow/gets stuck till I remove the CD/DVD. I can boot using a bootable CD/DVD. I can access the drive when booted into WinXP (I use WinXP to run non-compatible programs and XP-SP3 is not updated with any fixes from Microsoft.)
Essentially the drive does not work in Vista. I tried removing the upper and lower filter (in registry), removed driver and rebooted - the drive is still a zombie in Vista. It is shown as valid drive has no h/w conflicts.

Appreciate help from kind souls. Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,

I have a similar problem (no disk in drive message) and Ive tried most solutions on the net, and they are not working for me.

Recently, my external harddrive which is 1TB in capacity, stopped showing all my files on it when I plugged it in. It was as if my files of about over 400GB vanished, only a few files of 1KB or so were visible.

When I checked the properties, it showed me the correct capacity I had on my external harddrive, only problem was I couldnt view my files. I recently took it to a hardware expert and he said its probably a hardware problem.

What am driving at is that one of the folders on my harddrive is called "TV series".

The Title bar of the error message I see is called "TV series.exe -No Disk" and the error message is "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive\Device\harddisk1\DR33"

I tried going to Disk Management to change the drive name and path, but its not possible and right now my external Harddrive has gone for repairs.

Do I need to get it back b4 I can change the drive name? Im really confused as this error message is quite annoying.

Please HELP!Somebody!

Posted by: Kayla at August 9, 2011 10:51 AM

Hi Kayla. I am wondering if you have a bad game CDROM: can you try playing it on another computer? If that works, it's your system. If that fails too, then it's time to contact Electronic Arts (I think EA makes The Sims) and ask for a replacement. They have an easy system for doing that...
