How can I fix my HP CDROM/DVD drive glitch

While visiting a friend's office today he asked my advice regarding a problem with his HP 7100 Workstation. He runs Windows XP Professional. The problem revolves around his CD/DVD drive. The hardware manager shows the drive as connected and operating and reading/writing CD-ROMs works fine. However, when a DVD is inserted the drive refuses to even recognize that a disk is inserted ... prompts 'Please insert a disk in drive D:'

I ran the HP On line diagnostics they provide for this machine which tests read and write performance only at CD level and no discrepancies come up. HP does not list a replacement driver on their support site. My guess is that there is some additional software required to get the drive to recognize the DVD feature, but I have no idea where to start looking. Have you run into a situation like this before?

Dave's Answer:

The HP 7100 Workstation is an older machine that didn't ship with XP (which it's now running) so this suggests the machine has been upgraded. What you're seeing is that quite often, when you upgrade Windows, the OS can change the drive letters from the default, which, as you are seeing, causes all sorts of recognition problems.

To change it back:

Right-click My Computer.

Click Properties. The System Properties window appears.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Click the plus sign (+) next to CDROM.

Double-click the CD-ROM name, and click the Settings tab.

Under Reserved drive letters, select M (or the previously assigned letter) from the pull-down menu. Make sure that both the Start drive letter and the End drive letter are the same.

Click OK, Close, and then click Yes.

There are no additional drivers for Windows XP and HP doesn't support the use of XP on this machine, from what I can see. You can find out for yourself by popping over to the HP Support Center and searching on your workstation.

Hope this helps your friend get things working!

Thanks to Ed Ellis for his assistance with this problem.

On my HP PC, my HP DVD Writer 640b and my Samsung CD-Rom SC-148A does not allow the drivers to be loaded correctly. After several attempts of reloading and remove these devices,, I still get the ! in yellow in the Control Panel.

Can you suggest what I can do next?

PS. I am running WIN/XP SP2

I have a HP DVD840 It's been working fine for about 3 months and all of a sudden DVDs are no longer recognized. It will read any other type of media.

I'm running XP Media Edition. I was going to try Ed's suggestion above but I don't have a settings tab after double clicking the DVD ROM drive. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Ken, I have had the same issue with both of my drives.

I returned my first drive because after 3 months it would no longer burn cd's. Everytime I try I get a tracking error at around 5-10%.

The behavior is nearly identical to the first drive I bought.

Is HP making crap or am I just completely in the dark on what's going on with the drive.

Hp's troubleshoot is to open using paper clip and I could not. Tomorrow I'll disconnect the Drive and reconnect it again.

Can you please help me. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 and am having a problem playing an audio cd. They always played before, but I have downloaded sound recording software recently - is that anything to do with it? I can read a cdrom, but when I insert an audio cd, the error message says "Please insert a disc into drive d". I have unistalled the device and rebooted pc, but to no avail.

Hi, i have an HP that has a malfunctioning dvd/cd-rw, it is a HP DVD Writer 300n. For some reason it now will only recognize audio cds. It won't even recognize a dvd or a DVD+R. It was able to rip dvds and cds perfectly fine and record fine using nero. Any help on this subject would be awesome.

Dear Dave,
I have an HP Pavilion a820n, with an HP dvd writer/cd-writer combo. The tray opens and closes, but reader/writer does not recognize a dvd when I put it in to play; nor does it recognize a blank disk for writing. Sorry to bother you with this. I wonder if you can help me out.
Many thanks,

I am using a SONY AW-G170S DVD burner. I can burn -R discs without a problem but whenever I put in a +R disc, the icon changes from DVD-RAM(G:) to CD Drive(G:). When I try to open the drive it gives me the error "G:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." Since this is a Sony/NEC/Optiarc burner I tried to see if there is a newer firmware version but the Optiarc website doesn't have a support page. Any ideas on what causes this?

I need to know what I can do to get an xbox iso image file to burn to disk. I have used all kinds of DVD+RW +R -R and even put a CD-R in and the only disk that imgburn or active iso burner would recognize is the CD-R, and of course the file is to large for that media. So what do I do? Its a standard TSST Corp CDRWDVD TS-H493A that came with my Dell Dimension E520

Can CD-ROM drives play/read standard DVD-R discs? While I'm able to see the photos and video clips that I burned to a DVD-R disk while overseas on a WinXP computer...I've been having trouble loading the pictures and videos on my Windows 2000 Dell computer. I have a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-348B, which, in My Computer states is a Stand alone Standard CD-ROM drive.

Last year I even bought DVD's (both +R and -R) to burn slideshows to but my CD-ROM drive wouldn't recognize the DVDs and kept asking to PLEASE INSERT DISK INTO DRIVE.

I'm so frustrated because I've over 1000 photos from a 4 week journey I recently took to Costa Rica and am now unable to even view the pics that I burned to a DVD-R.

Please advise...I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks! Monique@mysticalpoetry.com

Dave, I have and HP PC running XP. I have installed a 'LITE-on' dvd multi-function drive. It will recognise some movies, but for the most part, it says insert disk or media.
I have Nero, DVD Decrypter, DVD shrink, E. M. DVDcopy, updated codects, and the list goes on. I double clicked on the drive in hardware manager, but no settings tab came up to re-designate the drive. I'm stumped.

I am having the same problem.
Also, my avg free scanner has consistently reported
file: shel32.dll result/infection: change path: C:\windows\system32\shell32\.dll
AND
file: ntoskrnl.exe result/infection: change path: C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

This is in addition to the fact since I bought it about a year ago, a few of the keys would only work some of the time, now working almost never.
the keys and the weird virus scan results i can deal with, but the houdini cd/dvd drive is rather unnerving.
Please help.
Thanks
