I fear that my boyfriend is checking my Skype account to see who I talk with and I’d like to have it stop. How can I change my Skype password?
If you’re worried about your boyfriend snooping on your Skype account, you can definitely change your password to limit his access, but I would suggest that you have a relationship challenge just as much as a technological one. I would ask why there’s a lack of trust on both your parts: your not trusting him with your account and him seemingly not trusting that you are being honest about who you communicate with within Skype. Don’t sweep that under the rug because in my experience these sort of problems don’t just magically get better. 🙁
Skype is a Microsoft property so there are a number of ways to update or change your Skype account password. I prefer starting within the Skype app itself, however, so you aren’t typing in any suspicious URLs along the way (since Skype is so popular, it’s a popular site for phishing attacks too).
Open up the Skype app or Skype program on your computer — I’m using the Mac version — and choose “Change Password…” from the File menu:
It’ll open up your Web browser and take you to https://secure.skype.com/ (note I’m not making that link clickable. You don’t want to trust other Web sites to send you to the right page):
Notice here the address bar with its padlock and confirmation of the “https” connection. In fact, any time you’re poised to type in an account password on any site, it’s smart to double check that the URL is correct. Any suspicious at all and you should back away and skip entering your credentials on the suspicious site!
In fact, on most modern browsers, like Google Chrome, you can actually click on the padlock and find out more about the security certificate:
Sheesh, did you see that between Skype.com and partner sites, I got 69 cookies by going to this page? That’s crazy!
Anyway, click on “Change password” adjacent to the “Skype account” entry on the page and you’ll be prompted to enter your existing password and your new password:
Enter a sufficiently complicated new password (twice) and you’ll get little green check marks:
Looks good. One last double check of the URL to ensure that you weren’t hijacked and if it’s still on the right site — https://secure.skype.com/ — then click “Save” to proceed!
If you’ve left the Skype app open in the background, you will also see it log out and prompt you to log in again. Quit it? Either way, you can click “Return to the Skype app” to get back…
Here you’ll want to re-enter your account credentials, both your Skype name or phone number, and your shiny new password.
Got ’em both entered? Click “Sign In” and you should be good to go!
That’s it. You can now change your password as desired. But please, think about whether that’s really going to solve the trust issue that’s arisen in your relationship… and good luck!
