I’m baffled. How do I attach a photo or document to an email I send from the Gmail app on my iPhone or other iOS device?
I’m not surprised that you are finding it a bit, um, nuanced, to figure out how to attach something to an email message from the Gmail app on your iPhone: the process is surprisingly different from how it works in the Mail app on iOS8 (and iOS9). The difference stems from the fact that the Mail app is written by Apple and the Gmail app is from a third party. You know, those “insider” programming tricks.
In “Mail” you simply tap and hold on the spot in your email where you want the photo or attachment, then a menu pops up with copy, paste and, an arrow tap away, Insert Photo or Video. The Gmail process is quite different…
To start, here’s an email in Gmail
While I could respond to this query with the information, it’s more fun to actually send a photo of the ticket itself, right?
To do that, the logical step would be to tap and hold on the spot where the photo should be included:
Hey! There’s no tiny arrow on the end of that vertical menu, so no way to get to Insert Photo or Video.
That’s correct. In fact, you can’t add a photo that way. Instead, tap “Done”…
Now tap “Cancel” because you don’t want to discard or save the draft, you want to keep typing!
At this point you’ll be back in the compose window:
Here’s where you need an eagle eye.
Look at the line that has the message subject. All the way to the right. See the paperclip icon? Tap on it.
Ahhh…. there’s that “Attach a photo” option!
Tap on it.
The photo I want is in my Camera Roll, so I’ll tap on that and select it.
Just about there. Now a tap on “Use” on the top right and the photo is attached to the email:
And… mission accomplished!
Now just a tap on the paper airplane icon on the top right to send it and we’re good to go.
Is there a way to attach multiple photos at the same time? seems like an obvious feature but I cant puzzel out how to do it.
Your directions on how to attach a photo to a GMail email via the app on an IPhone 7 Plus don’t work. My “paperclip” is in the upper right hand corner next to the blue “send” arrow, not down below next to the address of the sendee. When I click on the paperclip my photos appear in the body of my email and are huge, filling the receivers entire computer screen. Help! People get annoyed with me for sending such huge photos! I don’t know what to do!
You’re right that the interface has changed – and become easier to work with – but the problem of photos being too big is separate. Gmail isn’t going to automatically scale your photos, unfortunately. 🙁
