Hide a Facebook auto list on the left side menu?

With the latest round of Facebook interface changes, it has now automatically created lists for me based on various criteria including my home city, each company I've worked with, what colleges I went to, who I have identified as family, and so on. Nice, except I don't want them all. How can I zap the Facebook lists I don't want?

Dave's Answer:

Ah, you noticed that update too. Actually, it's hard not to notice it when all of a sudden a new list appears and it has 20, 50, 99+ updates pending and you don't even know how it was created. Rather jarring, actually.

Then again, once you get used to it, the lists are a nice way to organize your Facebook friends, though I have a sneaking suspicion that what they're doing is borrowing from Google Plus and its concept of Circles (that's also why you can now "subscribe" to someone's Facebook updates even though you aren't actually friends with them, more change brought about by the competitive social network at Google).

Competition is good. Random changes that confuse us is not.

First off, here are my default lists, including these new auto-lists:

I live in Boulder, Colorado, so Facebook has automatically created a "Boulder Area" list. Problem is that I don't want to keep track of people through that approach. I'll hide it instead and perhaps build my own list later on.

To hide it, move your cursor over the list name:

See that tiny pencil icon that shows up on the left side? Yeah, it's subtle. Click on it:

"Hide" is your choice. Choose it and you'll be reminded of how to unhide or restore it later if you change your mind:

Really want to hide it? Are you ssssuuuurrrreee? Click "Okay" and you're done.

For the record, I have hidden all of my auto-lists except for "Family". Take that, sis! :-)
