How do I disable music updates and info on Facebook?

I'm pretty upbeat on the changes that have come to Facebook recently, and even like the look of my new Timeline profile page, but I have to say that I'm getting way too much music information from my friends thanks to the Facebook Music / Spotify feature. I mean, if they listened to the music I liked (acid rock) it'd be sick, but Sinatra? Twitty? Sting? WTF, man? I mean, can't I just turn it all off?

Dave's Answer:

You should expand your musical horizons, dude. I like Sinatra and Sting, now that you mention it, but acid rock? really? Yikes. Not for me.

Which is, of course, the dilemma of Spotify and the new Facebook Music service, in my opinion: I'm interested in learning more about the music that my friends listen to, but only if it's in the same general genre or oeuvre as what I already listen to currently. Twangy country? Not so much. Industrial? Yeah, skip it. And Acid? I'm not going to recognize the bands nor am I going to click on the links so it's probably just not a good match and ultimately pollutes my newsfeed just as my Sting songs (really, you don't like Sting?) are just unwanted info on your own feed.

Really, that's the challenge of all discovery services: to find the balance between things that are going to pique your interest and giving you so much information that it drowns you and you quickly bail and miss the benefit of expanding your [in this case musical] horizons.

The good news is that it's pretty darn easy to turn off all the music updates in your Facebook newsfeed. Here's a pretty typical Spotify / Facebook Music update:

Okay, so my friend Doyle is listening to jazz great Billie Holiday. Nice, but honestly, I don't really care that much.

To disable or hide not just his music updates but all music updates for everyone in my newsfeed, I simply move the cursor to the top right of the box that contains this specific update, and -- ta daa! -- a small triangle appears:

Click on the triangle and a menu shows up, with the desired option at the bottom:

Select "Hide all by Spotify" and you're done. That was easy.

Let's say, however, that you decide you do want to expand your horizons a bit and re-enable Spotify. In fact, heck, you want to share your own music with everyone else because, well, because we aren't listening to enough acid.

To accomplish that, you can look down your left navigation area and see if "Music" shows up as one of the apps:

If it does, click on it. If not, here's a handy shortcut: Facebook Music / Spotify.

Either way you go, you'll end up looking at all the music updates from your friends in one convenient place. Here's an example update from my friend Terry:

Supertramp, Take the Long Way Home? Sounds good. I'd like to listen to it. To do that, I simply click on the tiny "play" button just to the left of the song title.

A click and...

Ah, right, I forgot to tell you. You need to install an app on your computer. Facebook's just warning you that there's something afoot. To proceed, click on "Add to Timeline" and it'll start downloading and pop up a helpful instructional window:

Which leads to...

Eventually, you'll get it all installed and hooked into your Facebook account (it was all done automatically for me, by the way) and you'll be presented with the Spotify player on your computer and - hopefully! - the song you originally chose to play will appear and the music'll start streaming to your speakers:

That's the basics of it. Neat, eh? Now, about your music choices...
