I noticed a couple of my friends on Google Plus have a tab on their profile that lets me see all the content they’ve “+1″‘s (liked? “plus one’d”?). Neat. How do I ensure that I have that too, since I also “+1″ / like my friends content, posts and photos on G+? Does that question even make sense?
I think it’s an example of how far we’ve fallen down the proverbial rabbit hole of social media jargon that I completely understood your question about “G+ +1s”. Would anyone not steeped in Google Plus terminology have even half a clue what we’re talking about? Of course not. That’s one place where Facebook is easier, in its jargon. Really, “share my Facebook likes” makes a lot more sense than “share my G+ +1’s”, doesn’t it?
Be that as it may, you’re right that there’s a page you can enable that lets other people easily see a neat listing of all content you’ve indicated you like by clicking on the “+1″ adjacent to that content, and by default it appears that’s not shared with everyone, so you do have to actually do something for that to be available.
Fortunately Google Plus does a nice job of letting you preview your own profile as others would see it, so that’ll be a good starting point for this tutorial.
I’ll start, however, by showing my friend Jen Newell’s G+ profile in detail. Along the top of her profile is the option we’re discussing, as you can see:
Click on “+1’s” and you’ll see that list of what she’s endorsed:
So with that in mind, do I have that available for people who check out my own G+ profile?
To find out, I’ll jump to my profile by clicking on my photo thumbnail on the top right to pull up this menu:
And there it is. No worries:
Oh, but it says “View profile as: Yourself”. Hmmm…. what happens if I want to view my profile as “Public” instead? A click and I find out:
Indeed that “+1’s” link is not available. Well that’s a problem!
To fix it the fast solution is to go back to “View profile as Yourself”, then click on the “+1’s” link. It’ll actually tell you that it’s not shared:
Easy enough, click on the “Google+ settings” link and you’ll be dropped onto exactly the right page to make that change.
You will have to scroll down a bit, but when you do, you’ll find this set of options:
I’ve highlighted the one you’ll need to change. Check “+1″ and after a second or two the change will be recorded and you’re done. Not sure it worked? Click again on your profile, on “View as Public” and double check it’s all good.
Now, wanna find me on Google Plus? That’d be great. I’m here: Dave Taylor on Google Plus.
