In Google's Gmail, can I delete individual messages in a discussion thread?

I know that I can delete entire discussion threads in Gmail, but what I'm wondering is if there's a way to delete individual messages in a thread, not the entire thread? Y'know what I'm talking about: sometimes discussions start out focused and then get sidetracked...

Dave's Answer:

Oh yeah, I know exactly what you mean about getting sidetracked. In fact, I was just talking to my wife earlier today and... oh, sorry. What were we talking about?

Seriously, yes, there's a way to delete individual messages in a Google Gmail discussion thread, though it's not obvious. Here's a typical short thread:

Gmail Discussion Thread: Closed

The key is that you need to expand the message you want to delete in the discussion thread. In this instance, the earlier of the two messages has incorrect data, so I want to delete it, but I want to archive the more recent message. I can expand or open the earlier message by clicking on its one-line summary tab, which then expands to this:

Gmail Discussion Thread: Message Opened / Expanded

Now, click on "More options" and you'll see the message headers along with quite a few action choices:

Gmail Discussion Thread: Options Displayed

It's a bit jumbled here, but the key is the blue text "Delete this message".

Click on it!

Now you see this:

Gmail Discussion Thread: Closed

and that's all there is to it. Easy enough, after all.

The message deleting might be right but the copy of it will be in the mail box of the other party concerned in the mail. an when they reply to it, u will see that it will be exisiting in the mail in one location or other.
the other aspect of it is that even if you delete anything there will be a copy in the server for life and can be used in anyway wat so ever.

This method does not seem to work.
This does from GMAIL Help

How do I delete an individual message?
If you want to delete one message in a conversation, click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message pane. Then, click Delete this message. The individual message is sent to Trash, and the rest of the conversation stays in your inbox.
