Gmail: can't create message labels?

Can you please tell me how can I label my Gmail messages coz I'm not getting the New Label option from the drop down box?

Dave's Answer:

That's weird. When I look at my Gmail messages, the drop-down More Actions... menu contains: Mark as unread, Add star, Move to Trash, a dashed line, my existing Gmail label, and a link "New Label...".

Ah, well, there's a different way to get to this same feature anyway.

On the top right of your Gmail window, click on the blue Settings link, then click on the Labels tab. You should see something like this:

Gmail: create new label

Type in the name of your desired label, click "Create", and you should be ready to go with that label. Further, I bet the Actions menu changes to reflect your use of labels too.

One useful trick for labels is to use them with Gmail filters, as detailed in my article Forward selected messages from Gmail.

If he looks at the top of his g-mail heading he will see: You are currently viewing Gmail in basic HTML. Switch to standard view. If he clicks on "Switch to standar view" his option to add new label will return.

A better answer would have asked what browser the person is using. If Gmail thinks you're using an unsupported browser, it will direct you to a "basic HTML" view that is missing a variety of features, including label creation. Some features also go away if you disable cookies and/or javascript.
