You can use iPhoto to get the pictures off the phone.

I understand where your fear is coming from. If you do a restore on the phone, you will lose any pictures you haven't imported yet. It should really warn you about that specifically because most people don't consider that they have any valuable data on an iPod that didn't come from their computer, so it is always "safe" to do the restore. This changes with the iPhone because of the camera. (It also changes a little bit with games on the 5G iPod because there is the potential to lose your high score data, but most people care about their photos a lot more than their high score from a game.)

How getting the photos off my iphone for WindowsXP or Vista?

I discovered the answer to the above question. When you plug the iPhone into a Windows computer, it will show up in Windows Explorer as a disk drive. The only documents that will show up in Windows Explorer within the iPhone will be the "Camera Roll" photos that were taken with the iPhone. You can just drag them into a folder on the computer.

I found "Image Capture" (you didn't mention it was an application, so I searched and found it) and tried what you suggested. When I click on download, however, nothing happens. Tried this with just one photo selected, as well as "Select All."

Dave just upgraded to new iphone and cant get photos off my old iphone. i thought this was not probem but on old iphone i see there is no service up top. i was told i could still get these photos off old iphone to itunes?

Pete, plug your phone into your computer and - if you've a Mac - run ImageCapture. It should see all the photos on your old phone and let you copy them onto your computer itself.

I followed the instructions for the XP Camera Wizard, downloaded my camera photos from the camera roll to a folder, now all the pictures show up in the folder, HOWEVER they are no longer in the order (sequence) they were taken. They are now in no order. Its as if the pictures have been downloaded based on some other sort order. Nothing is in sequence. I now have to go in and sort them and rename them to keep the order they were taken. Why did the download do this?

I have noticed a number of people have been trying to get photos OFF their iphone (that AREN'T in "Camera Roll") and onto their computer.

Dave, you suggested "Image Capture" but that seems to only select the photos that are in "Camera Roll" NOT my various Menus/albums of photos on my iphone.

Is there something I need to select in Image Capture so that it will let me copy the other images across?

I am using xp and I have the same problem as many of the windows users above mention.

I used to be able to get the photos off by just connecting my iphone and camera and picture wizard would ask to transfer the pictures. Last month this just stopped working. I plug in my iphone and the camera wizard doesn't even pop-up anymore. Going through "My Computer" the device will show up but when I right click and choose to export pictures it says the device is busy and could not be completed.

This is a very frustrating issue as I am continuing to use the phone for pictures and they are growing in number quickly with no solution to get them off. Dave, please help us windows users solve this problem.

Justin, I'll work on a new article on how to work with photos on your iPod / iPhone (it's the same process) from Windows iTunes. That's your answer too, Tracey: You can only manage the photos within iTunes, not on the phone. And yes, it's clunky.

I was going bananas trying to figure out how to transfer photos from my iphone to my computer (XP, I'm sorry to say). After reading all the above answers I was not getting any nearer a solution.
But I found a way and I hope it will help others:
Go to My Computer. My iphone shows up as a camera. Double click on it. A box named '[Your name] iPhone' comes up with nothing in it. Click on 'Get Pictures from Camera' in the 'Camera Tasks' menu on the upper left. Voila!
The next time I did this the photos automatically uploaded on to my screen as soon as I double clicked on the camera symbol in 'My Computer'. I hope it helps others.

hi - im not all that IT minded, however i run a windows laptop and here's how i downloaded my photos from my iphone to my laptop.
1. plugged in my phone to my laptop
2. went to Start, my computer which showed my iphone as a drive, right click on the iphone icon and select 'import pictures' and it imports the lot in one hit onto your laptop.

Wierd iPhone to XP bug / "feature"

If you're ability to download photos from your iPhone 3g to Microsoft applications has suddenly stopped working, even though your iPhone syncs fine with iTunes, check carefully whether there are any pics in your camera roles that were not created by your iPhone's camera, e.g. email or web downloads.

I lost many hours chasing out this problem and finally got the critical resolution from Apple telephone support.

Prior to removing the "offending" photos from my iPhone role, the symptoms were that my iPhone was only recognized properly by iTunes, while the MS operating system (e.g. Explorer / My Computer, Windows Scanner & Camera Wizard, Picasa, Kodak EasyShare, etc.) would usually fail to see the iPhone when connected. When they did see it as a device, they would all eventually timeout with a failure to connect, or a report that the device was busy.

Very strange behavior, but hopefully this will save a few folks hours of their life and associated frustrations.

Jez, well, yes, Image Capture is included on every Mac and has been part of Mac OS X for a long time. Plug in your phone -- which has a camera -- kick off Image Capture and your phone appears, then you can pick and choose which picks to pull off, easy as can be!

I am still frustrated. I took all the emailed photos and everything else that might be objectionable out of my camera role. Sometimes my iphone is recognized, but no photos can be downloaded to my XP because windows says it is busy. Why is this happening? Even if picasa sees the iphone, it wont acquire any photos. it used to work perfectly and automatically as soon as i plugged in my 3G.

Gary, that's an odd one. I'd suggest that you take your iPhone and MacBook into an Apple Store and have one of their team help you out. Let us know what they figure!

My iPhone is not recognized by my computer, Image Capture, nor iPhoto. It does show up in iTunes though. I searched for months trying to get videos and photos off my iphone... I finally was able to with DiskAid. I used the Mac version, but there a PC one too.

My iphone still isn't recognized by the programs mentioned above, but at least I was able to get the video and photos off. I even tried restoring my iphone, but that still didn't work. Download diskaid. Get the pictures off the iPhone. Clean up all non iPhone camera pictures and you will regain the my computer capability. I've searched for a solution for a week. This is it. Sadly you wont be able to keep the porn you downloaded on the phone but it will be on your pc.

I plugged in my iPhone to a PC, copied my photos from my iPhone to my PC and recently lost all data on my PC. I had an iTouch which I use primarily for contacts and calendar. I synced the iTouch to my Windows Vista HP and all the pictures in my laptop transferred to my iTouch.

I've now bought an iPad and have tried unsuccessfully to get the addresses, photos and calendar to the iPad from the laptop. HELP. All the pictures say is "optimizing", but I really could care less for the pictures. I want the addresses and calendars. HELP. (I don't have Outlook Express in my laptop.)

My symptoms: I would connect my iphone and it synced fine with itunes. But in 'My Computer' the device was only recognized as "Mobile Device" instead of "iPhone". And when I opened the mobile device the window was completely blank - no ability to download images at all.

As soon as I deleted 3 images that I had saved from an email into my Camera Roll it completely solved the problem. (Once I disconnected and reconnected the iPhone).

If you're on Windows and at least can see your iPhone in Windows Explorer but cannot see any photos, then make sure to double click on the folder that you see on the right side of Windows Explorer. By doing that two times I eventually reached a folder called "100APPLE" where all my photos were stored. Yes, the order is different and the naming as well, compared to the ones I managed to sync via Itunes earlier.

For some reason the sync process only worked partially for me earlier, but this way I could at least get all my photos (beore now going to upgrade to IOS4 ;)

I have a similar issue, but the solutions suggested havent helped me. I just upgraded my iPhone to os 4. During the upgrade, it kept freezing during the backup (we're talking several hours). Eventually I gave up figuring that it backed up whenever I plugged it in so I should have a million backup files anyway. (Stupid assumption in hindsight). I went through with the upgrade which required a restore.

I was lucky in that it kept all my apps and contacts and even sms history. However, every single photo from the library and camera role was deleted off the phone. Now I know they must still be in the phone somewhere as itunes tells me I have 54MB of photos. I just cant find them. Photos that were attached to contacts have remained on the contact.

I read a suggestion where you could copy the files in a backup folder to a new folder, convert to jpg and recover photos that way. I did get a few back that way, but not the majority. Interestingly, the backup had photos I had deleted, as well as images I had never downloaded at all such as friends facebook profile shots!!

I would really like to know how to find my lost photos. ANy advice greatly appreciated.

BTW I am running windows XP Pro, and my iphone only shows up as a camera in my computer, no longer as an explorable drive

I have a 3G phone and was having similar problems to others posting here.

I used to be able to plug the 3G in and just drag and drog my photos off, as if it was a camera. Then the 3G suddenly didn't show up under My Computer or in Explorer.

Finally found the answer. I had applied a passcode key. When I removed the passcode key, then turned the 3G off and on again, it could now be seen under My Computer and in Explorer. I then successfully copied by photos off.

Marjorie, sounds like you've wiped your phone clean. Not so good. Do this: plug it into your computer and select "Restore" from iTunes.

Fortunately, I do have pictures of our baby on my Iphone 3G that I need to export off the phone onto the computer/external hard drive but I am having the most trouble because our system is not supported by the programs I've purchased so far. OK -- I had the same problem as many of you:

I would plug my 3GS into my Windows Vista machine & while the iPhone icon would show up as drive, it was EMPTY -- where it used to show all my photos in my Camera Roll.

The solution was remarkably simple. Right before I plugged in my iPhone, I had plugged in my seldom-used USB webcam. Once I unplugged the Web cam & re-plugged in my iphone & restarted and closed iTunes -- Voila!

I hope this helps.

When I plug my iPhone 4 into my G5 Mac 10.5.8, I don't see an option allowing me to transfer photos from the iPhone to the Mac (iPhoto). The only option I see is to transfer photos from iPhoto on the Mac to the iPhone...

It is a pain to e-mail a photo from my iPhone to me at home, because I have Wildbllue internet and I am penalized if I download too much in a certain timeframe.

I have a contact in my 3GS Iphone and a picture attached to that contact. I can't seem to find how to save the picture again in my computer since it is just a picture attached to a contact and is no longer on my phone. I need this picture desperately.

Just one possible gotcha.. on my phone (3GS) I found that I had to enter my passcode on the phone to unlock it when it was plugged in before the mac would find it. May be obvious to most, but may catch others out. Once I got that, a beautifully simple solution with Image Capture. Thanks!

hi Dave. My imac was stolen by some scum bag(s) last week with all the photos i ever took on it. The only back up is the iphoto folder on iphone. how can I get theses photos back onto the new mac. Would image capture do it without compramising image quality?s in advance

Hi I am having the same issues as most people here, trying to get photos off of my iPhone 4 that are not in camera roll and on to my mac (snow leopard installed).. With my old windows computer you plugged the phone in with iTunes booting up and it shows the phone as an external device and you could remove photos.. Does anyone know how to do this on a mac???

Matt, if they're not in your camera roll, you need to use iTunes, but they're already sync'd with your computer (or how did you get them there in the first place?)

Pari, is it possible you have a security lock on your iPhone? If so, you do need to unlock the phone by entering your code after you've plugged it into the computer. Try that, see how it goes.

I recently got a iPhone 4, and I backed up my old phone to my iTunes, then plugged in my new phone into iTunes and started to submit everything to get everything connected, I looked down at my phone and before I could dissconnect Restore was already complete. It deleted all my pictures and videos, is there anyway I could get those back?

Just got the answer, and its really simple.
THIS IS JUST FOR THE WINDOWS USERS:

To transfer pics from the Iphone or Ipod to the pc, just conect the Iphone and let the pc 'think'... in a lil' wile it will pop up a little window asking what do you want to do (you know what Im talking about, the one that pops out everytime you plug a new hardware, or a camera or a sd card), one of the options is ''OPEN FOLDER''... open it, and the only thing you'll see is gonna be your pic roll... Just copy the damn photos to where you want and that's it!

EASY, FAST AND EFFICIENT!

Amy, all the phone numbers in your phone's address book should be in the Mac Address Book app once you've sync'd. Not sure where it shows up on a PC, however...

For all those that are asking how to transfer photos from iPhone sync folder to PC (not from camera roll!! folder in iPhone): IT CANNOT BE DONE. Here is an answer from apple support:

Before I was able to upload pictures from my 3GS to my Mac using Image Capture. It would automatically open when I synced my iPhone.

Lately, it hasn't worked. (In the past 6 months.) I have been trying to find a free way to retrieve all my pictures (at least the new ones) to my computer.

So far I have only been given the names of numerous apps that I would have to pay for. I don't have iPhoto already installed on my computer. The only other free way I can think of is to e-mail each photo one by one.

I guess the $2.99 app is my only way to go?

To take photos off iPhone 4 to Windows XP, follow:
1: Plug in iPhone
2: Locate iPhone through MyComputer
3: Right click on iPhone
4: Select 'Get pictures'
5: Follow Wizard and save photos to preferred location.

I know that there are issues with getting songs off an iPod onto Mac, if the iPod is PC based. Is this the same for getting pics off?

here's my problem
have an iphone 3gs, it was snyc to my imac os x 10.4.11
then i bought an iphone4..so then had to upgrade imac o/s to mac os x leopard 10.5 (now it's 10.5.8) but in the process i lost all old iphone data on the imac.. it's all still on iphone but i want to put back on imac so i can then put onto new iphone 4
been trying to download photos from phone to mac but it keeps freezing near the end (and i have tried deleting pics so there less)i've tried through iphoto and just now with image capture and it froze so i canceled it but the photos seem to have end up in the folder i created as per his advice i got from this page(so cheers for that part) i've been struggling for 6 days so far (technology is no friend of mine)

it turns out that about 1500 pics were copied out of about 2000 and ended up in the folder but about 500 were still no were but on iphone3gs

My Iphone 4 says it is in recovery mode and needs to be restored, but I have some recent photos I haven't transferred to my computer yet - do you know if there is any way of getting them off the phone before I restore the factory settings? I will be heartbroken to lose the photos completely. Will they be on my sim card if I take that out before I restore?

Hello! I have an iPhone 3G (that I am ready to recycle) but I can't get ALL of the pictures downloaded to my macbook air. I am using image capture and I have almost 2000 pictures, but when it gets to 368 it stalls and won't go any further. I have gone thru to make sure all the photos in my camera roll were taken from my iphone and deleted those that were texted to me. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

Gretchen, hmm, here's what I suggest: set the check box on the lower left of Image Capture to "delete after download", then choose the images 25-50 at a time. It might just get cranky about thousands of images, but if you copy and delete 100 at a time, say, you should be able to get them all, though it's a bit tedious. Good luck!

app store on my iPhone3GS by mistake got deleted. Can you tell me how to restore this from itunes. Also i have a doubt that when syncing with iTunes whether iphone contents will be backed up to PC or what ever is backedup in PC will come back to iPhone. - with regards - Balaraju

Balaraju, the only way I can imagine that you successfully deleted a core app like the App Store on your iPhone is if you've jailbroken the phone and aren't running the stock iOS. In that case, I'm afraid I can't help you out and you're on your own. Good luck.

I have an issue that I'm not able to find information on for fixing. I had a year's worth of pictures in my Camera Roll and finally imported everything with Windows Explorer. The pictures that import are removed but there are still about 2/3 a year of pictures on the phone that will not delete after the import is completed (I have checked the box to have them deleted after import.) I have an iPhone 4 and unfortunately use Windows Vista. How do I get these pictures off? Do I have to delete the multiple thousands of pictures one by one off of the phone?

HELP! I'm trying to download the photos on my iPhone 3GS to My Dell running XP. I've looked through the questions and responses here and can't find a solution to my situation, which is that although I have the iPhone plugged in to the USB port, its not showing up in Windows Explorer. When I plug it in, the computer beeps, and so does the phone. But the only new drive that shows is is Local Disk (V:) which says "Access is Denied"...

Rachel, sounds like you might have the wrong driver installed on your PC, so something else is seeing the phone when plugged in. Does it pop up a window "new device: default action?" still?

Jordan, sounds like you're asking me how to find and copy a video from your iPhone onto your computer? If so, Image Copy can do that too. Simply click on the "size" column to have everything sorted large-to-small, then click the video images (they're '.MOV' files, if I remember correctly), specify where you want them copied in the pop-up on the bottom, and click "Copy Selected..."

my iPhone 4S made a new camera roll album by itself after I downloaded some photos through Image Capture, and placed all previous ones in an album with a date on it. Now I can't get photos from that album from either Preview or Image Capture. Any idea how can I either transfer them to the camera roll album or at least download them? May I add how mind boggled I am to discover that 4 (almost 5) generations into it, all Apple could think of including on the photo manage option in iTunes, is how to bring photos ONTO the phone instead of off it. How can that be? Is that because of some deal they have with makers of a program that does that?

Sally, standard approach is to bury the phone in a bag of uncooked rice and give it 24hrs for the rice to pull the moisture out. Good luck!

i have tried image capture but the photos i want to delete are not on the camera roll and are on an album that will not let me delete from the phone. I have tried using a PC and opening the drive and this album doesn't show as well as iphoto and image capture on my mac and restoring the phone. This keeps coming back. These are not in my photo stream or the cloud. The trash can is not available and i even tried cropping the photos to make them unrecognizable but it just puts the edited pics in camera roll and leaves the original in this album. THe only options i have on the phone for this album under edit are share and add to. Once again, either of these keeps the original no matter what.

Hi please help me I have lost all photos of my daughter when she was a baby and need help. I had an iPhone 4 and copied all photos from my windows vista laptop to th iPhone 4, no problem. I regularly backed up the iPhone to iCloud and my laptop. I then upgraded to an iPhone 5, since "restoring from iCloud" all music etc has transferred and I plugged the new phone into my laptop and sync'd and backed it up. Then I realised only some of my camera roll is showing and only 85 out of approximately 2400 photos are in photo stream all other albums have gone. I looked on my laptop to copy the photos over and they've gone from there too. I have no idea where they have gone. I back up my laptop also as it has this function but I don't know what to do to try to restore. I am distraught at losing all the photos. Please help????

Sian, boy, I hate to hear that sort of story. Here's what I would do: *stop using your PC* and make an appointment at the Apple Store for iCloud. Then take in your phone and your laptop and explain exactly what happened. They have ways of accessing prior iTunes backups and might well be able to recover your photos. Good luck!!

Just got iphone 5 and can't sync w/ macbook pro 'driving' 10.4.11. Don't want to upgrade past 10.5.2 or lose photoshop elements 6, toast light, and microsoft office suite as was told versions I have.

Found Phoneview by ecamm.com but that needs 10.5.8.

Do you have any ideas on how to synch contacts/calendar/photos/etc that would work with older software so as not to have to go and spend big $$$ on software?

Download the dropbox app on your phone and then get on your computer and go to dropbox.com. You can the upload all your photos from your iPhone to your virtual space on the dropbox server.
