Forgot password to We-Blocker!

Dave, I've got We-Blocker filtering software installed on my laptop, but we've lost the password. They offer password retrieval for $10.00, but their phone number is no good. Is there anyway that you know of to hack the password, or to force-uninstall that program. I'd like to get rid of it. There is one guy on the web that claims that he can tell you how to do it, but you have to send him $10 in advance....I'm leery.

Dave's Answer:

I can't imagine a more frustrating and annoying problem. Any application that won't let you uninstall it is just bad news and something I'd want to know before installing it so I could avoid even going near the download.

We-Blocker seems like a great little free program on the surface, a common complaint with We-Blocker is when it installs it goes quickly through the set up and password process and if you blink you'll be having to make that $10 phone call to their tech support, and this appears to be how they make their money.

So be careful when installing third party apps that play such an important roll in your daily computer usage!

If you can't remember typing a password it could still be set to the default which is BOOTS, so you could start first by giving that a try.

Often software filtering only blocks URLs in common browser such as Netscape and IE so it maybe worth trying a less conventional browser such as Opera (there's a free add supported version) or one of my personal favorite alternative browsers, Kmeleon. Using one of those instead may help.

As for a straight password hack I don't think there's an easy solution around at the moment apart from the $10 one.

Maybe they should create an application that prevents the downloading of such frustrating software!

Many thanks to Ed Ellis for his help

i recently installed we-blocker on my home computer, and like many others the password what i thought i had set, would no longer work. so i ripped it out. literally.

i started my pc in safe mode, opened the directory system32 , and deleted it. restarted my computer, ran system mechanc which removed any reg edits and shortcuts which were no longer valid, the only job to do now is get IE working again. i have just learned that when the program is removed ( even if you uninstall it, it will reset your proxy settings. This in itself is unbelievble. many users do not have the knowledge in configuring their IE to work after uninstalling an application. again, another charge could be going out to their technical support.

sincerely
Brad G
