How do I fix my Apple iPod: It's busted?

Do any of the following describe a problem you're having with your iPod? My iPod nano won't power on! My iPod mini won't shut down or is frozen! I can't get songs to transfer from iTunes to my iPod! My iPod doesn't show up in iTunes at all? My Apple earbuds or headphones don't work with my iPod shuffle? Or is something else wrong and you just figure it's time to send your baby, your formerly favorite gadget, in to service?

Dave's Answer:

Apple just released a very useful troubleshooting guide to the iPod (called iPod Troubleshooting Basics) and I thought it would be a useful reference to also make excerpts of this article available here at AskDaveTaylor too:

Having trouble with your iPod? Simply updating your iTunes and iPod software often resolves the issue [especially if you're trying to sync your iPod-capable cell phone to iTunes --DT].

My iPod doesn't respond, won't power on, or the display remains blank

If your iPod doesn't respond, is "frozen", won't turn on, or nothing appears on the LCD screen check for these possible causes:

•The Hold switch may be on. Check the Hold switch to make sure it's not in the locked position. Unlock it, and try using iPod again.
Tip: Even if the Hold switch is already in the unlocked position, it's sometimes helpful to toggle it so it's locked and back again.

• Your iPod may need to be reset. Here are the steps needed. Resetting your iPod does not affect your music or data files.

• Your iPod's battery may not be charged. Plug your iPod in, wait for a moment, press a button to turn it on, and check the screen. Here are some easy steps to get the most out of your battery. Note: In a fully discharged state, some iPod models may not be recognized by the computer. Click here for information.

Songs do not transfer to my iPod

Following an iTunes download songs do not copy to your iPod. Your iPod requires a specific or later version of iPod software. Use iTunes 7 or whatever other version of iTunes you have to determine if an update is required.

My iPod has a folder icon with an exclamation point

Some iPod models require a specific or later version of iPod software. Try updating or restoring iPod. If you still see the exclamation point, try these additional troubleshooting tips. If you see a sad iPod icon with an exclamation point, see this article.

My iPod doesn't appear in iTunes or on the desktop

Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or on the desktop when you connect it to your computer. For Mac, find an answer here. For Windows PC customers, try these solutions.

My iPod says "Do not disconnect" on the screen

The "Do not disconnect" screen is normal. Learn more about the disconnect screens.

My headphones don't work

If your iPod's headphones don't work or have static or garbled audio, try connecting them to any other 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack, like the one on your computer. If the issue with the headphones persists, replace them. For an iPod under warranty, get them here. Otherwise, check out the cool headphones at the Apple Store. If the issue appears to be with the iPod, try a reset. If that doesn't work, then restore iPod with the latest iPod software using iTunes 7 or later.

How can I get my iPod serviced

It's easy! Complete the iPod service request form to receive service for your iPod or accessory. If your iPod requires warranty service, Apple will send you a prepaid shipping box you should use to send your iPod to Apple's repair center.

What happens when an iPod is serviced?

iPod equipment sent in for service is replaced with functionally equivalent new, used, or refurbished iPod equipment. Service is processed through AppleCare's direct mail-in system. You will not receive the same iPod that was sent in for service. If your original iPod was personalized by Apple, your replacement iPod will be automatically personalized with the same text.

How much will my in-warranty service be?

Warranty service for eligible repairs is available at no charge for twelve months from the date of original retail purchase (date of purchase). If you have purchased the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod, there will be no shipping and handling fee. A $29.95 shipping and handling fee will apply to all warranty repairs performed six months after date of purchase.

What about out-of-warranty service?

If service for your iPod is not covered by Apple's warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod, Apple offers other options. If your iPod requires service because the battery's ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, in the United States, Apple will replace your iPod for a service fee of $59, plus $6.95 shipping. If your iPod requires service for other issues (except accidental or misuse damage), in the United States, Apple will replace it for a service fee of $249, plus $6.95 shipping.

Will the data on my iPod be preserved?

No. Songs and files will not be transferred to your replacement iPod. Make sure to back up important files, and to remove all data from your iPod before sending it to Apple. Apple is not responsible for any data sent to it in connection with service.

Information like this and more can be found in the iPod service FAQ and iPod out-of-warranty Battery Replacement Program FAQ.

My iPod Classic 80g won't upload more than 8gigs of music. Is there any way to fix it?

Dave Taylor said, on January 12, 2011 10:22 AM:

Ryan, Lustrum, Dave, etc, when your iPod starts being weird, the best bet is to hook it up to your computer and "Restore" it. You usually have to then recopy all your music, videos, etc., but it does fix things and reset the iPod system for proper functionality.

I heard that putting a new click wheel may help fix the problem but i'm not sure.

Hello. I have the ipod nano 2nd generation. It worked fine and then one day the screen froze, I pressed the menu/play-pause button, it re-booted and still froze on the same song selection it was on, tried it a few more times and it ended up going to the menu screen. It wouldn't even let me scroll. I let the charge end and then re-charged it; same thing. Out of frustration I hadn't messed with it for a while. I have VERY RECENTLY tried trouble-shooting again. It will charge and I get the menu screen but now won't even let me re-boot it. I pressed the buttons simultaneously and nothing. I've even switched the lock button back and forth a few times and tried re-booting it, still nothing and still won't let me scroll. I tried connecting to the computer via usb and all it says is "do not disconnect" with the circle and slash symbol, can't even sync or download songs. It is an older ipod nano, could it be the battery needs replaced or if the battery was faulty would it even power on? Has a faulty battery been known to affect the funtionality of an ipod? Or does it sound like the circuit boards need replaced. I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED!!! Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks for reading and for your time.

I have a 2nd generation ipod touch 16GB. It works except the touch screen does not respond for about a half inch of the left side. We have already replaced the digitizer. What are other explantations for this? There are no scratches on the front and the back has just scuff wear on it from sitting. Everything else works just fine on it.

Hi,

How are you?
What do you usually do with a ipod touch 2nd gen if it has a broken logic boards?
Can you repair it? or can you repair the logic boards?
Many thanks!

Dave Taylor said, on July 27, 2011 8:52 AM:

Um, how do you know the logic board is broken, Brandon? If that is the case -- or even if it's something else -- I would take it into the local Apple Store and see what they advise. Probably, though, they'll just say "time for a new one", which might be the case. If you do need to buy a new one, do check the refurbished iPods through the Apple online store (go to store.apple.com then search on that page for the "Refurb" link)

I just can hear the sounds from "settings---->sounds" but I can't hear anything from the musics, movies that I always used! It just has sounds sometime that I connect it to my laptop (syncing with iTunes) and such irregular times that I have no idea about! Everything which were audible before, it is not now! I read forums and some people said that it is because of the hot weather, so it will be fixed by putting it in the freezer !!! and some other guys told to install "sdsettings" from Cydia and it will temporarily become alright! I don't have any other idea about the problem, I just ask u to help me ... Thnx, Regards

Hi! Yesterday, I spilled water on my iPod. Yesterday, it worked but the screen was very very dim. Once I got home I put it in a bag of rice for 24 hours (as it said online). Now today, I took it out of the bag and at first it wouldn't turn on but once it did it was still very dim. I've tried going into the brightness setting just to make sure that it was all the way up and even when it was it made no difference. I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to make the screen brighter or is it damaged for good.

Classic solution is to bury it in uncooked rice, which can suck moisture out. Failing that (and it works occasionally at best) you might just need a new one. Sorry!

Doug, I'd take the iPod and, if possible, your computer into the Apple Store and ask one of their "geniuses" to help out. They can diagnose a lot of things that are hard to figure out here in the virtual world. Good luck!

My iPod touch (4th generation) has been having a blank white screen for almost a full day and I have tried to reset and restore it, but nothing seems to be working. Is there anything else I could do to fix it?

SO, My iPod touch 3rd generation fell in the toilet, & i immersed it in a bag of rice for 2 days, and nothing happened, but now i hooked it up to the computer and it sync-ed but the screen doesnt work, i can still play music on it (on the built in speaker, through headphones, and on a docking station) BUT the only problem is that the screen is all white, and sometimes purple and gray with vertical lines everywhere....is there any way that can be fixed?

Randomly when i use my ipod (battery displays full or charged) the ipod randomly turns off. i try to turn it on and it displays the battery dead symbol. i put it on charge and it still displays battery dead symbol. it may be on charge for days and still wont charge.
Typically i tried hitting it etc and it randomly turns on. however it will randomly shut off.

I got water on my iPod a few days ago, dried it off, it was fine. I put it in the charger and went to bed. When I got up in the morning, there were three white lines on my iPod. Will they go away or do I need to get a new iPod? I got mine for free a few years ago and they make them different so it will inconvience me to get a new one. please help!
