I think I’m a member of every social network known to man at this point, and my two favorites remain Facebook and MySpace, believe it or not. My question: is there any way in MySpace to add Twitter-like “status” messages to my profile? Y’know, the “DarlingLil is typing in her PJs” or “Mike is wondering if the ice cream truck will drive past”?
Though I didn’t realize it until quite recently, yes, it turns out that MySpace does indeed have the same sort of mood indicators you can find in Facebook. Whether either of them are actually of any value is another story, but since you’re into it, let me show you how to update your status on MySpace and see what your friends status messages are too.
First off, as usual, log in to your account and if you’ve the standard interface, you’ll see something like this:
The reason you probably never noticed it on the lower left is because it doesn’t show you anyone else’s status, so it’s really not very fun. Sure, you can click on “View my friends’ status updates.” but, really, it’s much more fun to switch to the New Home Skin by clicking on the option near the top of your page:
Switch over and suddenly MySpace does feel a bit more Facebook-like. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence but one of the bonuses is that your friends’ status and mood indicators are now shown as changing, a la Facebook too:
Want to change your own status? Click on “Update” immediately next to whatever message you currently have (mine says “working late into the night”) and you’ll see it changes to a text input box:
Type in what you want, then pick from one of the zillions of mood graphics (aka smiley faces) that strikes your fancy, then click “Done” and your mood is updated to your entire circle of friends.
Easily done at any time, and people who get into this stuff here and on Facebook seem to change their status at least a half-dozen times a day. Amazing use of time, but hey, that’s cool.
