Can I disable the ring when my RAZR receives text alert messages?

Dave, when we were having lunch a while back, you told me the other day that the only way to turn off the text alert was to turn off the sound on your RAZR phone, but I didn't believe it, so I asked Verizon about it. They said I can do it with Menu > select Settings > select Ring Styles > highlight Style Detail > press Change > highlight Messages > press Change.

Dave's Answer:

Y'know, Verizon is pretty close with these Motorola RAZR instructions, but given that they actually wrote the operating system that runs on these RAZR phones, it's rather surprising to notice that the actual solution isn't quite like what they explain...

The problem is not only that there's a missing step, but that there's an unnecessary step too, which makes me wonder if perhaps my own RAZR has out-of-date firmware?

Anyway, here's how my phone works:

Menu
> select Settings & Tools
  > Sound Settings
    > select Ring Styles
      > highlight Style Detail
        > highlight Inbox
          > press Change
            > choose Silent

Now you've turned off your text message / sms / inbox alerts completely and you'll just get a tiny icon when you have new incoming messages. This can be particularly useful in meetings and at conferences, of course, but generally it's just nice to know that you can tweak any of a number of different audio settings on the Verizon Moto RAZR phone!

If you try this on your own RAZR, do let me know if it works identically, and if it's different, what version of the Verizon Moto firmware are you running?

Interestingly enough, my Cingular RAZR has none of the selections you outlined. My menu has a "Tools" icon, but when I select it, I do not get the options you describe. Even when I select My Stuff->Sounds (on the Cingular Menu), I don't have a "Ring Settings" option.

Couldn't you just create a one second long completely silent mp3 file, upload it to your phone, and set that as the text notification sound?

if i have to create a silent file, then upload it to my phone, then select it as an option this means that whoever wrote the software is a complete idiot.

Actually the statement at the top is pretty accurate for my Razor V3xx, heres my steps:
Menu > select Settings > Audio > select Ring Styles > highlight Style Detail > press Change > highlight Messages > press Change.

:s

Redas' advice worked for me, + I added a couple of things:
Menu > select Settings > Audio > select Ring Styles > highlight (whatever Style) Detail > press Change > highlight Messages or IM > press Change > Select Silent or whatever.

Thank goodness y'all helped me figure this out, I was tired of getting woke up by IM notifications!
