Upgraded to iOS9 on my iPhone 6 and I like a lot of the chnages, except the keyboard shifting from upper case to lower case and back is really annoying! Is there some way to disable this “feature”?
Apple giveth, Apple taketh away. Every time there’s a system update that introduces new user interface elements it’s a sure bet that while some people will like some of the changes, others will wish for the former layout, design, buttons or user experience. That’s part of what makes the job of a user interface designer so darn hard, because it’s like opinions: if you ask 5 people, you’ll get 6 answers!
Fortunately when it comes to specific interface elements, however, there are many subtle changes that are reversible, and indeed there is a new setting that lets you enable or disable the keyboard keys on your Apple iPhone or iPad Air Mini switching from upper case to lower case and back. The problem is, it’s not where you’d think it would be…
To start, let me demo what I’m talking about. Go into any app, ready to type, and you’ll see the standard iOS virtual keyboard:
Type a single letter, however, and it automatically switches from uppercase to lowercase:
I actually rather like it, but there are definitely plenty of people who aren’t too thrilled about this change and want to restore the original functionality. Which you can do!
Go to Settings and scroll down so you can see General:
Tap on General…
Now tap on Accessibility, an area it’s likely you’ve never explored before.
Why? Because that’s where all the “assistive” or “disabled” settings are found. But some of ’em turn out to be useful for everyone, not just those people with color or vision challenges.
Lots of interesting settings to explore, but don’t get sidetracked. This isn’t what we seek
Nor are those droids, but that’s another story!
Swipe to scroll down a bit…
Ah, finally there it is. Tap on Keyboard to get to the keyboard settings.
Turns out that there are rather a lot of ’em:
And that’s where you find the setting you seek: Show Lowercase Keys. Enable or disable it as per your preferences.
Go to another app and you’re done, it should be ready to work. Sometimes, however, it seems you need to restart the iOS 9 device, so if it doesn’t work, double check that you’ve left it set as you desire, then do a forced restart (usually holding down the power (top right edge) and home buttons simultaneously for about 10 seconds)
Thanks for the tip, as this has been bugging me ever since I updated to iOS9!
Thank you so much for this. I have been really bugged by the change and spent some time searching for the solution, only to find endless articles saying how great it was. A good example of what John Stuart Mill called the tyranny of the majority!
