Can I create a Google Group by directly adding members?

I want to set up a Google Group for my local church group, but I know that at least a few people in the group won't be able to deal with invitations that they need to click on the link, etc. So is there any way to directly create a group and then simply indicate who should be on the list, without "inviting" them, per se?

Dave's Answer:

There is indeed a way to do that, but as you might expect, it's not recommended and more often than not, sadly, it's a sneaky way for spammers to send out mail that slips through a lot of spam filters because it's from Google, not some oddball fly-by-night system.

If you agree that it's a legit use, I'll show you, but if you're a spammer, don't abuse this and mess it up for us legitimate users, okay? Thanks.

I'll assume that you have a Google account and that you're logged in to it already (perhaps for Gmail, or Google Reader) so that when you go to groups.google.com, you'll be able to directly proceed...

First step is to click on "Create a group...":

google groups create group

Now you'll be able to name your group and offer up a description:

google groups create group 2

Those are obviously important fields, but what's likely more important to you is located a bit further down on the same page:

google groups create group 3

You'll probably want to mark the group as "Restricted" so that it's a closed, private group and your discussion doesn't end up in the search engine database some day.

Click on "Create Group" and you'll need to verify that you're not a robot with one of those annoying CAPTCHA systems:

google groups create group 4

Click on "Create my group" and you'll be ready for the next step:

google groups create group 5

That's where we need to really pay attention. Along the top it says 'Add members directly'. That's what you want to click on. If you're not a spammer. But we've already gone over that, right?

Here's what Google says:

google groups create group 6

Right. We're in agreement on that one!

Scroll down a bit and you'll see:

google groups create group 7

That's it. Enter the email addresses of the people in your church group, add a welcome message so that they have a clue about this new group you've created and added them to, and click on "Add members".

Done.

Thanks Dave! I was needing to do this exact same thing. Timing is impeccable on this one for me!

Dave,
There is a limitation in this feature that most folks won't find - submitting large (greater than 10 in my case) lists of new members in a short amount of time will lock your group and trigger a chat with a nice Googler who has to verify your useage and unlock your access. Took 2 days for my account to be unlocked - but once they verified I was human and not spamming, no roadblocks ever again...

I have something to say, now that you mention it, but ...
Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you for all your efforts on this Web site by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
