How do I copy music onto my Apple iPhone from iTunes?I'm stumped. With my iPod I simply drag and drop the music I want to take with me from my library onto the iPod on the left side of iTunes, but my Apple iPhone doesn't allow me to do that. How the heck do I put songs on the iPhone without synchronizing my entire (massive) music library? As with much to do with the iPhone, there's a bit of a trick to getting this working smoothly so you can have control over your iPhone music, while keeping it as darn easy to work with as possible. The answer? Create a custom playlist for your iPhone music library. Let me show you how to do it - it's pretty darn easy. Pop into iTunes and choose File --> New Playlist. Now rename it to something logical: I use "iPhone Sync": ![]() Now you can just drag and drop music from your iTunes library (in iTunes, needless to say) into this new playlist. When you're ready, you'll see a bunch of music happily ensconced in the playlist (remember, it's all just "pointers": the actual music files are still safely in the main music library, so if you delete something from a playlist , you haven't deleted the original music file itself): ![]() Notice here on the very bottom of the iTunes window it shows you how many songs are in the playlist, along with the size and total playing time. For my current playlist, it's 140 songs, 10.1 hours, for a total file size of 851MB, no problem for my 4GB Apple iPhone. At this point, you need to plug in your iPhone if you haven't already done so. It'll pop up the usual summary screen: ![]() Cool. Now click on the "Music" tab and you'll see that you can select "sync playlist". Do that, then select the new iPhone sync playlist you've created, as shown here: ![]() Set things up just as I have shown and that's all there is to it. Now click "Sync" in iTunes and it'll synchronize your playlist with the iPhone music library and next time you click on that ole' "iPod" button on the iPhone, your selections from you music library will be present. Oh, and one really nice feature of creating this playlist is that you can manage it, adding and deleting songs to your heart's desire, even without your iPhone present. Whatever changes you make are instantly applied to your iPhone music library the very next time you synchronize the device. Suddenly even 8GB might feel small. :-) Still learning about your iPhone? Assaad, when your phone is plugged in launch iTunes and give it 30 seconds or so to notice that the phone is connected. Then you should automatically be taken to the summary screen and can proceed from there. damen said, on August 19, 2008 3:29 PM:

My god... I've been reading the above comments. WHY IN THE WORLD YOU PEOPLE BUY A DAMN iPHONE WHEN YOU HAVE NO IDEA IN THE WORLD HOW TO USE A COMPUTER??? YOU GUYS DO REALIZE THAT YOU BOUGHT ONE OF THE MOST IN-DEPTH, CUSTOMIZABLE PHONES ON THE MARKET RIGHT??? I mean some of you don't know how to create a folder, some of you don't know how to find which folder you're even keeping your music in!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE JUST TELL ME WHY YOU BOUGHT THIS PHONE!!! I'd be more than happy to stop back in here a see some responses to this. I mean why the hell not just buy a regular phone, like a Motorola RAZR or Nokia 5230, and if you really want music just buy a cheap little mp3 player for $80. You could have saved yourself $300 or more. You obviously aren't going to be able to get all of the uses out of the iPhone. I'll be back for some responses to this. I really do look forward to them. And Dave, congrats to you for helping out the first person. That was a regular question that deserved an answer. iPhones are not like iPod's when it comes to syncing so good for you for taking the time and effort but for the love of GOD please do not encourage these other people who can't even locate which letter their drive is. Peace, willie said, on January 3, 2009 3:12 AM:
Hi Dave; I've followed your instructions and despite setting up a folder "iPhone Sync" and adding music from my iTunes pc library, the "sync" operation doesn't seem to have any effect i.e. the old music list (podcasts actually) on my iPhone doesn't reflect the new "iPhone sync" list. Would really appreciate your help to get over this problem. Many thanks, Willie willie said, on January 3, 2009 3:14 AM:

how can download songs onto my iphone without delating the songs on the iphone. Nikolai said, on March 6, 2009 10:27 PM:
There is a much easier way of adding songs and album or videos etc. Because the way described here means erasing and reinstalling your whole library or you may inadvertently replace your iphone playlist with just one song or album you wanted to add. Just follow these steps instead: 1. Once in Itunes and your iphone hopefully pops up in the left hand side column, click it to open your iphone summary. You should see "Options" as a sub category, below "Version". Just tick the "manually manage music and videos" tab. 2. A small window pops up asking to save changes to your iphone/itunes settings. Click Apply. 3. Go to your Main Music or Video Library. 4. Now just drag and drop any music or video you desire into your iphone by dropping it over the iphone icon in the left column of itunes. Problem solved. Mitur Binesderti said, on March 9, 2009 8:14 AM:
Apple really needs to change their whole philosophy on this. I personally own four computers that I use, in addition to my work computer, and I want to listen to my music on all of them. In this day it is just silly to have lock your iPod/iPhone to a single iTunes library; just plain stupid. ana said, on March 12, 2009 12:43 PM:

This is not (or at least, no longer) necessary. In iTunes, select your iPhone device and go to the Summary tab. Under Options, check the box for "Manually manage music and videos." You may then drag music from your iTunes library song list to your iPhone device listing in the left pane. Alfred Maruma said, on July 24, 2009 1:39 AM:

Brad, you're stuck in the registration loop, it sounds like. Just go ahead and register and sign up for an iTunes account. It doesn't cost anything, that's just part of the configuration step. Then you should be good to go. Kristina, if it doesn't pop up with iTunes, just launch the program manually and then give it 10-30 seconds to see your plugged-in iPod. Then you should be good to go too! spincycle said, on November 6, 2009 11:01 AM:

Allen, what you should do is use something like the very latest version of Senuti or iPodCopy (see http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_to_get_songs_off_apple_iphone.html ) to get all the music off your iPhone, copy that into your iTunes library, then let the new computer wipe everything and start from scratch. THEN copy your music back on. Make sense? me said, on November 8, 2009 9:13 AM:

First off, thanks for the help. I purchased a 16G 3S iphone and was able to transfer my entire itunes library of 1578 songs to it. My only concern is that those 1578 songs ate up 9.3 gigs. I plan on downloaded more songs (I usually add 5-10 a week) plus I'll be adding a bunch of apps. I will also be using the phone to take pictures/videos but do not plan on saving them on my phone but rather sending them to my PC and saving them there. I have spoken to apple and they seem confident that I will be able to recover my PURCHASED items after a Format but that is only a third of my collection. I have a PC and I am running an old Iphone software version. 3.1.3 (7E18) on a 3G I did not want to update to 4.0 version feeling this should not be necessary so I kept trying. Anyhoodle, my mistake may be very basic but I hope it helps some of you. I was just trying to get music over to my phone. that's it. and stolen files from limewire. Could care less about syncing everything but I got multiple error messages at different sync stages: with yahoo contact not syncing or there 'not being an internet connection' or ‘photos cannot be updated because of missing folder’... all these error messages disrupting the sync before even getting to the music sync portion. I kept syncing anyway (someone said it took them many tries). Well I finally realized my remedy. Here is what I did, beginning with taking the new music files and adding them to the itunes playlist which I was attempting to update to my iphone: 1. Drag new music files into itunes playlist

Here is my problem; I like to be organized and I have material that I have that I put into itunes but it isnt in the proper location. I have a book but it is in the music section, cause it is an mp3 yet how do you put it in the books section? Dave Taylor said, on July 7, 2010 7:46 AM:
Anita, did you plug in your iPod, then go to the iPod area in iTunes and double check that you have *that playlist* sync'ing with the device? Then do a sync? Shawn, I'll work up a new article on that subject, but in a nutshell, choose the audio book track, then in File -> Get Info... choose the "Options" tab and you'll see a pull-down where you can specify music type. Choose "Audiobooks" and it vanishes into the confusing audio book area of iTunes and your iPod. :-) Shawn Anania said, on July 7, 2010 1:04 PM:

Dave, I had to do it a bit differently. I have a Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2. When I plug in my iPhone 3GS under Devices in iTunes, my iPhone appears. Then below and a bit to the right the following appear: Music, Movies, TV Shows, Ringtones, and Voice Memos. In order to add my Playlists to my iPhone I have to drag the playlist to "Music." It will appear under "Ringtones" and above "Voice Memos." It will then automatically sync to my iPhone. I hope this helps others. Graham said, on July 18, 2010 12:35 PM:

When coming to the music tab bit, I can't add new music without it saying it will replace all other music on my iPhone. Why? The way I normally add music won't work either, the music on my phone is coming up in grey writing and I can't do anything with it? TLW said, on July 30, 2010 3:04 PM:

John and others who aren't finding their computer finding their device, try starting iTunes THEN plugging in the device. Try different USB ports, try a different cord too. Joan, not sure what files you're looking for? When the iPhone syncs, it's synchronizing the files and copying them into the iTunes library. They're not going to show up on your Desktop or in Documents or My Documents as separate files. cs said, on January 6, 2011 9:03 AM:

Joel, I think you'll find that the sync that's happening on the other computers isn't a full data sync (otherwise you could add music on your work computer and it'd show up on your iPhone). iPhones pair with a single computer and that's the one that manages its content. Thanks again Dave Taylor said, on July 7, 2011 10:26 PM:
Warren, the message you're getting means that your iPhone was originally sync'd with another computer and is now paired with that computer, not your own. To fix that, you need to let it "restore" or initialize your phone. Problem is, it'll wipe everything off the device, so you want to try and get that data into the cloud first, which is why MobileMe (soon to be iCloud) is so beneficial. From iTunes on my PC I could find no "Sync music" option (in fact, my screen looks quite different) but there is an "autofill from" selection box on the bottom left. After selecting "music" I was able to use the selection box to scroll to my playlist. Once it was pulled up I used an "autofill" button on the bottom right to upload the playlist. Don't know how common/uncommon a screen like mine may be but thought this might be some useful info. That said, your tutorial gave me the information I needed to reach that point. Thank you. The rest was sort of intuitive. Jasmine said, on July 14, 2011 7:51 PM:

I am having so many of the same problems others are having. First, when I plug in my phone, it is seldom recognized in the column on the left. Over the weekend I did get it to recognize it (but it won't again now), and I had created a playlist as you suggested, but was unable to drag & drop to the iphone icon because of the black circle with a line through it. When itunes comes up, it is listed as itune1. My husband recently got a nano and started using itunes, and my library ended up on his itunes account. Now it seems we have 2 itunes accounts! Help! I am ready to take the gaspipe. Al I want to do is download my playlist! Nancy said, on July 18, 2011 11:13 AM:
Yikes! After an hour and a half, it finally recognized my iphone, but I still can't drag & drop my playlist to the iphone icon. I never got a Summary page to sync the music. I am a new iPhone 4 user. I tried to follow your instructions by creating a playlist on my work computer and moving my music and podcasts into it. Then I tried to move it to my iPhone. iTunes tells me that my phone is synced to another computer and syncing to this one will erase everything on my iPhone and replace it with everything in this iTunes folder. But I get the same exact message when I try this on my home computer. I have no idea what computer it thinks it is synced with. All I want to do is put one group of podcasts onto my iPhone so I can listen when I am walking - but I don't want to erase my iPhone in the process. Can you help? Dave Taylor said, on August 3, 2011 11:16 PM:
Sorry to say, Lara, you're going to have to pick one of your computers and let it wipe and reformat the phone, but it's very curious that it doesn't think *either* is your sync'd system. Note that if you have MobileMe (or iCloud, we're in a funny limbo state between the two) you should be able to back everything up before the process starts. In fact, you might want to check in with a "Genius" at the local Apple Store if you have one, just in case. Good luck and let us know what happens! jasmine said, on August 4, 2011 9:16 AM:

Wow I hate the iPhone. I played the good sport while my girlfriend was hunting for a smartphone and dutifully did my best to highlight the pros and cons of droids and iPhones. She chose the iPhone. That decision sucks. The phone itself, is great: resolution, construction, typepad recognition etc. What sucks is being handcuffed into the vertically integrated Apple fleecing house. Hello Dave Great instructions however when I go to sync the phone its comes up with : No Content-you can download music from ITunes. Dave Taylor said, on August 15, 2011 7:05 AM:
laurence, the first and obvious question is: do you actually have music in iTunes separate from your iPhone? That is, if you click on "Music" on the *very* top left of the iTunes app, does it show that you have anything on the computer? If not, you need to buy some from iTunes or rip a few CDs that you have already purchased. Once the music shows up in iTunes, you should be able to copy it onto your iPhone as long as there's space on the phone. John George said, on August 15, 2011 7:27 AM:
Hi Dave, I have a lot of music on my pc as well as 20+ albums purchased via iTunes library on my iPhone4! However, since sincing it for my first update (almost 1 year ago now) I only have a "fraction" of those albums and "none" of the music that is on my pc but, would love to have on my iPhone! Why does all the abums/music that I've purchased "not" appear on my iPhone4? I tried creating a playlist as per your directions (even nameing it as you suggested i.e. iPhone sync) then, highlighted and copied 60+ albums from my music library in iTunes to the new playlist (and I have a 16G iPhone e.g. should have plenty of space) and pasted into the new playlist! But, the playlist only showed 28 songs out of the 343 that I was attempting to copy/paste and then hopefully transfer to my iPhone! What am I doing wrong? Can you please help me? I look forward to your prompt and knowledgable advice. Thanks in advance… John aka; jaginoz Laurence said, on August 15, 2011 1:41 PM:

Hi Dave, I have an iPhone 3g and I'm having troubles putting music on from any computer except my girlfriend's laptop. I've authorized my other computer with iTunes but no luck. I've tried clicking the "manually manage music" button but when I say "apply" it asks me if I want to delete all the music and sync to the iTunes library. This doesn't seem right seeing as how I'm telling it that I will manage it myself. Any help on this is much appreciated. (I've even tried de-authorizing the laptop but that didn't help either. Not sure if that even has anything to do with the issue or not...) Anyway, thanks for any help. Derek Derek said, on March 2, 2012 6:31 PM:

I'm supposed to be pretty smart, a techie since DOS 1.0 and AppleII. After that... I'm the original smart phone user, I mean going way back to hyper expensive tech in the 90's. Have owned, used and enjoyed my Iphone for most of a year. Finally getting around to moving some music onto it ... was surprised by the fact that I couldn't just figure it out. Now that I grok the ITunes paradigm (sync folder, duh), it seems easy, but it surprised me to realize that sometimes I have to ask for help with an Apple product. Hope somebody reads this post. This is really helpful -- thanks! It took me awhile to get it to work. The key for me was to ensure that both of my computers were set up so that Home Sharing was on. My newer computer was able to recognize my iPhone 4, but my old laptop had too old an operating system to recognize my phone (I think). But that old laptop has all my music on it. Awesome! Thanks. But it is even more utterly awesome that Apple has implemented this awkward and anti-intuitive interface on iOS devices. apple, time to deliver de DECENT interface, like the Mac interface. I want to be in control, not the other way round. I want to see the iOS device as I see a Mac, with all its files and folders, and I want to move, copy, paste and delete stuff as I do in a Mac. And I want a factory-jailbroken iOS device, of course. Because it is my stuff. Or else competitors will take advantage! Gary said, on February 10, 2013 7:47 AM:

Yours was the one instruction from how to move playlists from iTunes 11.0.2 to iphone 4 that made sense to me. I made the new playlist as instructed (which wasn't ideal since this is actually 6 playlists - hypnosis tracks etc for different birthing purposes..TMI - i get to music tab, check synch music - then receive this message "Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, TV shows, books, and tones from this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?" and the sub choices - entire music library, selected playlists..., include music videos etc are not selectable. Two hours later I am tearing my hair out. TIA. (MAC 10.8.3 if that matters) Sue said, on April 24, 2013 12:49 PM:

Dave, I'm new to the iPod world. My new iPhone is my first venture into iTunes and all that wonderful stuff. I've followed your directions, but my folder call iPhone Playlist will not accept selections from my playlist.
I've recorded songs off of CD's, and they go into my "party Shuffle" alright. But I get the black circle with the line through it, when I try to move them over to the iPhone Playlist.
What am I doing wrong.
