How do I copy music onto my Apple iPhone from iTunes?I'm stumped. With my iPod I simply drag and drop the music I want to take with me from my library onto the iPod on the left side of iTunes, but my Apple iPhone doesn't allow me to do that. How the heck do I put songs on the iPhone without synchronizing my entire (massive) music library? As with much to do with the iPhone, there's a bit of a trick to getting this working smoothly so you can have control over your iPhone music, while keeping it as darn easy to work with as possible. The answer? Create a custom playlist for your iPhone music library. Let me show you how to do it - it's pretty darn easy. Pop into iTunes and choose File --> New Playlist. Now rename it to something logical: I use "iPhone Sync": ![]() Now you can just drag and drop music from your iTunes library (in iTunes, needless to say) into this new playlist. When you're ready, you'll see a bunch of music happily ensconced in the playlist (remember, it's all just "pointers": the actual music files are still safely in the main music library, so if you delete something from a playlist , you haven't deleted the original music file itself): ![]() Notice here on the very bottom of the iTunes window it shows you how many songs are in the playlist, along with the size and total playing time. For my current playlist, it's 140 songs, 10.1 hours, for a total file size of 851MB, no problem for my 4GB Apple iPhone. At this point, you need to plug in your iPhone if you haven't already done so. It'll pop up the usual summary screen: ![]() Cool. Now click on the "Music" tab and you'll see that you can select "sync playlist". Do that, then select the new iPhone sync playlist you've created, as shown here: ![]() Set things up just as I have shown and that's all there is to it. Now click "Sync" in iTunes and it'll synchronize your playlist with the iPhone music library and next time you click on that ole' "iPod" button on the iPhone, your selections from you music library will be present. Oh, and one really nice feature of creating this playlist is that you can manage it, adding and deleting songs to your heart's desire, even without your iPhone present. Whatever changes you make are instantly applied to your iPhone music library the very next time you synchronize the device. Suddenly even 8GB might feel small. :-) Still learning about your iPhone? First off, thanks for the help. I purchased a 16G 3S iphone and was able to transfer my entire itunes library of 1578 songs to it. My only concern is that those 1578 songs ate up 9.3 gigs. I plan on downloaded more songs (I usually add 5-10 a week) plus I'll be adding a bunch of apps. I will also be using the phone to take pictures/videos but do not plan on saving them on my phone but rather sending them to my PC and saving them there. Is the 16G big enough or should I have gotten the 32G? Craig H Collins said, on February 18, 2010 2:16 PM:

Hi dave. I am a desperate man. My computer has had a bit of a breakdown and I think I am resigned to activating a full system restore to make it well again. Unfortunatelly I have some 900 odd songs in my iTunes library which are sitting somewhere on my hard drive. I have spoken to apple and they seem confident that I will be able to recover my PURCHASED items after a Format but that is only a third of my collection. Is there anyway or any software that will allow me to transfer everything back into my iTunes library from my iPod or iPhone. Thanks for listening Jodi Mallow Maas said, on March 1, 2010 9:08 PM:

I have a PC and I am running an old Iphone software version. 3.1.3 (7E18) on a 3G I did not want to update to 4.0 version feeling this should not be necessary so I kept trying. Anyhoodle, my mistake may be very basic but I hope it helps some of you. I was just trying to get music over to my phone. that's it. and stolen files from limewire. Could care less about syncing everything but I got multiple error messages at different sync stages: with yahoo contact not syncing or there 'not being an internet connection' or ‘photos cannot be updated because of missing folder’... all these error messages disrupting the sync before even getting to the music sync portion. I kept syncing anyway (someone said it took them many tries). Well I finally realized my remedy. Here is what I did, beginning with taking the new music files and adding them to the itunes playlist which I was attempting to update to my iphone: 1. Drag new music files into itunes playlist

I was able to go through all your steps above and created my "iphone sync" playlist, sync'd, etc..but when I disconnected my iPhone and checked my "IPOD" I did not have any of the playlist songs on my phone. I connected my iPhone back into my PC and clicked on 'Music' and I do see my entire playlist. But I don't see it on my iPhone...what am I doing wrong? Thanks! Here is my problem; I like to be organized and I have material that I have that I put into itunes but it isnt in the proper location. I have a book but it is in the music section, cause it is an mp3 yet how do you put it in the books section? Dave Taylor said, on July 7, 2010 7:46 AM:
Anita, did you plug in your iPod, then go to the iPod area in iTunes and double check that you have *that playlist* sync'ing with the device? Then do a sync? Shawn, I'll work up a new article on that subject, but in a nutshell, choose the audio book track, then in File -> Get Info... choose the "Options" tab and you'll see a pull-down where you can specify music type. Choose "Audiobooks" and it vanishes into the confusing audio book area of iTunes and your iPod. :-) Shawn Anania said, on July 7, 2010 1:04 PM:

Dave, I had to do it a bit differently. I have a Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2. When I plug in my iPhone 3GS under Devices in iTunes, my iPhone appears. Then below and a bit to the right the following appear: Music, Movies, TV Shows, Ringtones, and Voice Memos. In order to add my Playlists to my iPhone I have to drag the playlist to "Music." It will appear under "Ringtones" and above "Voice Memos." It will then automatically sync to my iPhone. I hope this helps others. Graham said, on July 18, 2010 12:35 PM:
