How do I copy music onto my Apple iPhone from iTunes?

I'm stumped. With my iPod I simply drag and drop the music I want to take with me from my library onto the iPod on the left side of iTunes, but my Apple iPhone doesn't allow me to do that. How the heck do I put songs on the iPhone without synchronizing my entire (massive) music library?

Dave's Answer:

As with much to do with the iPhone, there's a bit of a trick to getting this working smoothly so you can have control over your iPhone music, while keeping it as darn easy to work with as possible. The answer? Create a custom playlist for your iPhone music library.

Let me show you how to do it - it's pretty darn easy.

Pop into iTunes and choose File --> New Playlist. Now rename it to something logical: I use "iPhone Sync":

Apple iTunes in Mac OS X: New Playlist for iPhone

Now you can just drag and drop music from your iTunes library (in iTunes, needless to say) into this new playlist. When you're ready, you'll see a bunch of music happily ensconced in the playlist (remember, it's all just "pointers": the actual music files are still safely in the main music library, so if you delete something from a playlist , you haven't deleted the original music file itself):

Apple iTunes in Mac OS X: New Playlist for iPhone

Notice here on the very bottom of the iTunes window it shows you how many songs are in the playlist, along with the size and total playing time. For my current playlist, it's 140 songs, 10.1 hours, for a total file size of 851MB, no problem for my 4GB Apple iPhone.

At this point, you need to plug in your iPhone if you haven't already done so. It'll pop up the usual summary screen:

Apple iPhone: Summary view in iTunes

Cool. Now click on the "Music" tab and you'll see that you can select "sync playlist". Do that, then select the new iPhone sync playlist you've created, as shown here:

Apple iTunes in Mac OS X: Synchronizing New Playlist with iPhone

Set things up just as I have shown and that's all there is to it. Now click "Sync" in iTunes and it'll synchronize your playlist with the iPhone music library and next time you click on that ole' "iPod" button on the iPhone, your selections from you music library will be present.

Oh, and one really nice feature of creating this playlist is that you can manage it, adding and deleting songs to your heart's desire, even without your iPhone present. Whatever changes you make are instantly applied to your iPhone music library the very next time you synchronize the device. Suddenly even 8GB might feel small. :-)

Dave, I'm new to the iPod world. My new iPhone is my first venture into iTunes and all that wonderful stuff. I've followed your directions, but my folder call iPhone Playlist will not accept selections from my playlist.

I've recorded songs off of CD's, and they go into my "party Shuffle" alright. But I get the black circle with the line through it, when I try to move them over to the iPhone Playlist.

What am I doing wrong.

I followed your exact instructions on this topic, yet when i click the sync button under the music tab, it says "The iPhone "Hunter's iPhone" cannot be synced. The required disc cannot be found."
(Also, the playlist i wanted was checked)

What in the world does that mean?!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Posted by: Assaad at August 17, 2008 4:44 PM

Assaad, when your phone is plugged in launch iTunes and give it 30 seconds or so to notice that the phone is connected. Then you should automatically be taken to the summary screen and can proceed from there.

My god... I've been reading the above comments. WHY IN THE WORLD YOU PEOPLE BUY A DAMN iPHONE WHEN YOU HAVE NO IDEA IN THE WORLD HOW TO USE A COMPUTER??? YOU GUYS DO REALIZE THAT YOU BOUGHT ONE OF THE MOST IN-DEPTH, CUSTOMIZABLE PHONES ON THE MARKET RIGHT??? I mean some of you don't know how to create a folder, some of you don't know how to find which folder you're even keeping your music in!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE JUST TELL ME WHY YOU BOUGHT THIS PHONE!!! I'd be more than happy to stop back in here a see some responses to this. I mean why the hell not just buy a regular phone, like a Motorola RAZR or Nokia 5230, and if you really want music just buy a cheap little mp3 player for $80. You could have saved yourself $300 or more. You obviously aren't going to be able to get all of the uses out of the iPhone. I'll be back for some responses to this. I really do look forward to them. And Dave, congrats to you for helping out the first person. That was a regular question that deserved an answer. iPhones are not like iPod's when it comes to syncing so good for you for taking the time and effort but for the love of GOD please do not encourage these other people who can't even locate which letter their drive is.

Peace,
BOB-E-O

Hi Dave;

I've followed your instructions and despite setting up a folder "iPhone Sync" and adding music from my iTunes pc library, the "sync" operation doesn't seem to have any effect i.e. the old music list (podcasts actually) on my iPhone doesn't reflect the new "iPhone sync" list.

Would really appreciate your help to get over this problem.

Many thanks,

Willie

Hello. Happy New Year! I was hoping you can help.
I have the latest version of iTunes with my 2nd gen iPhone. While I've downloaded purchased ITunes songs to my phone before, I can't today. I'm getting a message telling me, "The iPhone (and the name of my phone)cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found."

I did a diagnostics, but everything appears to be fine, with the exception of the Helper being disabled. (I disabled it in Startup through MSConfig- I think- awhile back.) Looked for it again to enable it, but couldn't find it.

Any ideas? Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks much!

Posted by: martin at March 3, 2009 2:49 AM

There is a much easier way of adding songs and album or videos etc. Because the way described here means erasing and reinstalling your whole library or you may inadvertently replace your iphone playlist with just one song or album you wanted to add. Just follow these steps instead:

1. Once in Itunes and your iphone hopefully pops up in the left hand side column, click it to open your iphone summary. You should see "Options" as a sub category, below "Version". Just tick the "manually manage music and videos" tab.

2. A small window pops up asking to save changes to your iphone/itunes settings. Click Apply.

3. Go to your Main Music or Video Library.

4. Now just drag and drop any music or video you desire into your iphone by dropping it over the iphone icon in the left column of itunes.

Problem solved.

Posted by: Nikolai at March 6, 2009 10:27 PM

Apple really needs to change their whole philosophy on this. I personally own four computers that I use, in addition to my work computer, and I want to listen to my music on all of them.

In this day it is just silly to have lock your iPod/iPhone to a single iTunes library; just plain stupid.

I followed your advise to download songs from Itunes to my Iphone, but when I get to the point (At this point, you need to plug in your iPhone if you haven't already done so. It'll pop up the usual summary screen:), the pop up screen does not appear ?

Posted by: monique at July 21, 2009 6:48 PM

This is not (or at least, no longer) necessary. In iTunes, select your iPhone device and go to the Summary tab. Under Options, check the box for "Manually manage music and videos." You may then drag music from your iTunes library song list to your iPhone device listing in the left pane.

I just got a new iphone 3GS and did what you said about syncing but everytime i plug my iphone into my computer the menu doesnt pop up. I dont know what I have to do? If you could help me in anyway i would appreciated it
thanx

Posted by: kristina at October 25, 2009 12:28 AM

Brad, you're stuck in the registration loop, it sounds like. Just go ahead and register and sign up for an iTunes account. It doesn't cost anything, that's just part of the configuration step. Then you should be good to go.

Kristina, if it doesn't pop up with iTunes, just launch the program manually and then give it 10-30 seconds to see your plugged-in iPod. Then you should be good to go too!

Posted by: allen at November 6, 2009 9:08 PM

Allen, what you should do is use something like the very latest version of Senuti or iPodCopy (see http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_to_get_songs_off_apple_iphone.html ) to get all the music off your iPhone, copy that into your iTunes library, then let the new computer wipe everything and start from scratch. THEN copy your music back on. Make sense?

First off, thanks for the help.

I purchased a 16G 3S iphone and was able to transfer my entire itunes library of 1578 songs to it. My only concern is that those 1578 songs ate up 9.3 gigs. I plan on downloaded more songs (I usually add 5-10 a week) plus I'll be adding a bunch of apps. I will also be using the phone to take pictures/videos but do not plan on saving them on my phone but rather sending them to my PC and saving them there. Is the 16G big enough or should I have gotten the 32G?

Unfortunatelly I have some 900 odd songs in my iTunes library which are sitting somewhere on my hard drive. I have spoken to apple and they seem confident that I will be able to recover my PURCHASED items after a Format but that is only a third of my collection. Is there anyway or any software that will allow me to transfer everything back into my iTunes library from my iPod or iPhone. Thanks for listening

just click and drag from your itunes songs to the icon for the iphone on the sidebar of itunes (iphone must be plugged in. ) this will add songs.
if you want to delete songs one by one, open up the music subicon and you will see all the songs of the iphone in the intunes main window, double tap and select delete for the songs you want deleted.

Posted by: zeev at March 3, 2010 1:19 PM

I tried going through the steps you outline, in order to transfer music I purchased from itunes on my computer to my iphone, but I keep getting warnings that once I sync, I will be replacing all of my music on my iphone with the music in my itunes library. All I want to do is add music to my iphone (from itunes) not replace my existing music. Is there any way to do that?

When I get to the

;At this point, you need to plug in your iPhone if you haven't already done so. It'll pop up the usual summary screen' part, I've re done it over and over again, but the summary screen never comes up.

There is a very simple way to do this and I don't think it has been addressed. Follow these steps:

1> Open iTunes

2> Plug in iPhone

3> When the iPhone shows up under devices, Right click on it and go to "transfer purchases"

That is it.

Hi Dave!
Before I stumbled upon this eye opening article I had already plugged in my iPhone and clicked sync, but I guess my phone didn't have enough space for all my songs so it put random ones onto my iPhone. Now I want to put songs I've selected to be on here that are my favorites, but when I plug it into my computer nothing happens, it doesn't start to sync or anything, and the page that woul say "maddies iPhone" isn't popping up. Please help!

Please tell me how.

Posted by: lorraine at June 26, 2010 4:45 PM

I have a PC and I am running an old Iphone software version. 3.1.3 (7E18) on a 3G

I did not want to update to 4.0 version feeling this should not be necessary so I kept trying. Anyhoodle, my mistake may be very basic but I hope it helps some of you.

I was just trying to get music over to my phone. that's it. and stolen files from limewire. Could care less about syncing everything but I got multiple error messages at different sync stages: with yahoo contact not syncing or there 'not being an internet connection' or ‘photos cannot be updated because of missing folder’... all these error messages disrupting the sync before even getting to the music sync portion.

I kept syncing anyway (someone said it took them many tries). Well I finally realized my remedy. Here is what I did, beginning with taking the new music files and adding them to the itunes playlist which I was attempting to update to my iphone:

1. Drag new music files into itunes playlist
2. Go to music tab of itunes and click sync (bottom right).
3. After error message appears, check the playlist to which you just added new music files. (You may need to try the sync many times, even if you are getting the same error because you want to induce the result of 4. below)
4. Find the music file(s) you recently moved into that playlist. They should now be marked on the left side of the playlist, right next to the song name checkbox, with a small exclamation point or question mark, denoting an file error. Or perhaps Itunes cannot find it? Whatever
5. Double click on the music file that is demarked as such
6. A prompt will appear asking to find the file
7. Find the file, wherever you put it, and double click it.
8. The music file should start playing in itunes now, confirming the file was found
9. Now, click sync again in the music tab of itunes and it should sync the new files to your iphone

Posted by: numbnutz at June 26, 2010 9:29 PM

I followed the step by step procedure for adding songs to iphone as per Dave. Finally after sync, my old songs frm the iphone gets deleted. I m able to add music but my old songs will nt b there.. please help me to find a solution for this. I m using new iphone 32GB.

Posted by: Sathish at June 27, 2010 4:12 AM

I was able to go through all your steps above and created my "iphone sync" playlist, sync'd, etc..but when I disconnected my iPhone and checked my "IPOD" I did not have any of the playlist songs on my phone. I connected my iPhone back into my PC and clicked on 'Music' and I do see my entire playlist. But I don't see it on my iPhone...what am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Posted by: Anita at June 30, 2010 3:28 PM

Here is my problem; I like to be organized and I have material that I have that I put into itunes but it isnt in the proper location. I have a book but it is in the music section, cause it is an mp3 yet how do you put it in the books section?

Posted by: Shawn Anania at July 7, 2010 3:44 AM

Anita, did you plug in your iPod, then go to the iPod area in iTunes and double check that you have *that playlist* sync'ing with the device? Then do a sync?

Shawn, I'll work up a new article on that subject, but in a nutshell, choose the audio book track, then in File -> Get Info... choose the "Options" tab and you'll see a pull-down where you can specify music type. Choose "Audiobooks" and it vanishes into the confusing audio book area of iTunes and your iPod. :-)

Thanx. It was easy and simple...

Posted by: Timothy Jensen at July 11, 2010 11:17 PM

Dave,
Thanks so much for your help. You are much better than the Apple technicians.

I had to do it a bit differently. I have a Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2. When I plug in my iPhone 3GS under Devices in iTunes, my iPhone appears. Then below and a bit to the right the following appear: Music, Movies, TV Shows, Ringtones, and Voice Memos. In order to add my Playlists to my iPhone I have to drag the playlist to "Music." It will appear under "Ringtones" and above "Voice Memos." It will then automatically sync to my iPhone. I hope this helps others.

Posted by: Joan at January 4, 2011 9:08 PM

John and others who aren't finding their computer finding their device, try starting iTunes THEN plugging in the device. Try different USB ports, try a different cord too.

Joan, not sure what files you're looking for? When the iPhone syncs, it's synchronizing the files and copying them into the iTunes library. They're not going to show up on your Desktop or in Documents or My Documents as separate files.

Karen's iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Erasing and syncing will erase the contents of this iPhone.

Ummmm......what does this mean in normal people language? I only have one library on iTunes as far as I can tell, unoless it is telling me that I have another library on another computer that I may have accessed previously. IF I continue and "erase" my iPhone, what will I actually lose? I have nothing downloaded as far as music is concerned, and my only iTunes downloads are podcasts.

It might be grayed out because you have it set to "automatically sync" or similar. Check the settings on the "Summary" tab (the checkboxes at the bottom of that screen)...

Here's a new one I have not seen. Just bought a new v4 iPhone. I can sync music just fine to my iPod from several authorized computers (work and home), but I can ONLY add music to my iphone from HOME, not from work. Why in the world not? I'm stumped!

Thanks Dave!

Posted by: Joel at June 27, 2011 3:57 PM

Joel, I think you'll find that the sync that's happening on the other computers isn't a full data sync (otherwise you could add music on your work computer and it'd show up on your iPhone). iPhones pair with a single computer and that's the one that manages its content.

This was helpful, I was missing a couple of minor steps. I would like to know the answer to a previous question regarding the problem that everytime i try to sync music it says it will erase all the current music on my phone...what should i do. Thanks again

Posted by: Warren at July 7, 2011 8:57 PM

Warren, the message you're getting means that your iPhone was originally sync'd with another computer and is now paired with that computer, not your own. To fix that, you need to let it "restore" or initialize your phone. Problem is, it'll wipe everything off the device, so you want to try and get that data into the cloud first, which is why MobileMe (soon to be iCloud) is so beneficial.

Posted by: Cactam at July 11, 2011 1:10 AM

From iTunes on my PC I could find no "Sync music" option (in fact, my screen looks quite different) but there is an "autofill from" selection box on the bottom left. After selecting "music" I was able to use the selection box to scroll to my playlist. Once it was pulled up I used an "autofill" button on the bottom right to upload the playlist. Don't know how common/uncommon a screen like mine may be but thought this might be some useful info.

That said, your tutorial gave me the information I needed to reach that point. Thank you. The rest was sort of intuitive.

I am having so many of the same problems others are having. First, when I plug in my phone, it is seldom recognized in the column on the left. Over the weekend I did get it to recognize it (but it won't again now), and I had created a playlist as you suggested, but was unable to drag & drop to the iphone icon because of the black circle with a line through it. When itunes comes up, it is listed as itune1. My husband recently got a nano and started using itunes, and my library ended up on his itunes account. Now it seems we have 2 itunes accounts! Help! I am ready to take the gaspipe. Al I want to do is download my playlist!

Posted by: Nancy at July 18, 2011 10:47 AM

Yikes! After an hour and a half, it finally recognized my iphone, but I still can't drag & drop my playlist to the iphone icon. I never got a Summary page to sync the music. Also, there are no apps showing in my library (although they are all on my husband's library (how did that happen?)). I am afraid to sync the music as it may wipe out all the apps I have on my phone now.

I am a new iPhone 4 user. I tried to follow your instructions by creating a playlist on my work computer and moving my music and podcasts into it. Then I tried to move it to my iPhone. iTunes tells me that my phone is synced to another computer and syncing to this one will erase everything on my iPhone and replace it with everything in this iTunes folder. But I get the same exact message when I try this on my home computer. I have no idea what computer it thinks it is synced with. All I want to do is put one group of podcasts onto my iPhone so I can listen when I am walking - but I don't want to erase my iPhone in the process. Can you help?

Posted by: Lara at August 3, 2011 3:44 PM

Sorry to say, Lara, you're going to have to pick one of your computers and let it wipe and reformat the phone, but it's very curious that it doesn't think *either* is your sync'd system. Note that if you have MobileMe (or iCloud, we're in a funny limbo state between the two) you should be able to back everything up before the process starts. In fact, you might want to check in with a "Genius" at the local Apple Store if you have one, just in case. Good luck and let us know what happens!

Wow I hate the iPhone. I played the good sport while my girlfriend was hunting for a smartphone and dutifully did my best to highlight the pros and cons of droids and iPhones. She chose the iPhone. That decision sucks. The phone itself, is great: resolution, construction, typepad recognition etc. What sucks is being handcuffed into the vertically integrated Apple fleecing house.
Baaaahhhhh! and Moooooo! - right into the slaughter house.

Posted by: laurence at August 15, 2011 2:55 AM

laurence, the first and obvious question is: do you actually have music in iTunes separate from your iPhone? That is, if you click on "Music" on the *very* top left of the iTunes app, does it show that you have anything on the computer? If not, you need to buy some from iTunes or rip a few CDs that you have already purchased. Once the music shows up in iTunes, you should be able to copy it onto your iPhone as long as there's space on the phone.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at August 15, 2011 7:05 AM

Hi Dave, I have a lot of music on my pc as well as 20+ albums purchased via iTunes library on my iPhone4! However, since sincing it for my first update (almost 1 year ago now) I only have a "fraction" of those albums and "none" of the music that is on my pc but, would love to have on my iPhone! Why does all the abums/music that I've purchased "not" appear on my iPhone4? I tried creating a playlist as per your directions (even nameing it as you suggested i.e. iPhone sync) then, highlighted and copied 60+ albums from my music library in iTunes to the new playlist (and I have a 16G iPhone e.g. should have plenty of space) and pasted into the new playlist! But, the playlist only showed 28 songs out of the 343 that I was attempting to copy/paste and then hopefully transfer to my iPhone! What am I doing wrong? Can you please help me? I look forward to your prompt and knowledgable advice. Thanks in advance… John aka; jaginoz
PS… I would appreciate any help on, how to transfer the music on my pc to iTunes and ultimately onto my iPhone? jg

Hi Dave:

I have a 3GS iphone and had the WiFi on and it updated my software to the iSO 5.0.1 and since then the phone is not working right. I think the last time I synced on iTunes I still had the iSO 4 software. Is there a way for me to check on iTunes to see what software was synced?

I need to restore the phone, but only want to do so if I can reinstall my last sync with the iSO 4 software so I do not lose all my info.

Any guidance is appreciated.

I'm new to the world of Apple products. I have tried a couple times to get songs from my Mac to my Iphone. I followed your directions and after I use the SYNC button I get questions about erasing my IPhone. And what does Revert mean? I find it confusing and I'm not sure what I should do. Eric

Posted by: ERIC at December 8, 2011 6:41 PM

Hi Dave,

I followed ur instructions to sync my music from laptop to my iPhone, but when I pressed on the 'Music' tap, and followed by 'sync music', a warning appeared saying that if I sync, all my iphone contents will be erased. Thus, chicken out and dared not proceed further. Please explain what it meant by the term 'content'. Thank you so much.

I have tried this but the music doesn't seem to be transferring back to my iphone from itunes, all it is doing is copying the music from the iphone without the music coming off the iphone. How can i put the music that had been taken off back onto it?

Posted by: Lauren at December 20, 2011 5:15 AM

Thank you so much. That was so helpful. I took off some music from my iPhone and haven't been able to put more in, so have not had any of the Christmas music that I wanted this season. Finally today, I can now play it. Thanks again :) xxxxx

Thanks so much for this. My daughter was given an iPhone 3G by her StepDad. Years ago he asked me if we could put all of his Beatles CDs on to my computer in order to get them onto this iPhone. I had already been using iTunes because My daughter had the iPod Shuffle but he and i could not get his iPhone to work. I told him to look into it and research it and I'd gladly hook it up again. Of course i wasn't going to go out of my way to do HIS research...lol. Now my girl has his old iPhone. I told her she should load up all of those Beatles tunes and walk around the house listening to them. she said, "no thanks"

Seems to be difficult to transfer due to Apple iTunes copyright protection? Can only transfer items bought on iTunes otherwise is says 'cannot sync'?

Posted by: RodC at December 31, 2011 6:03 AM

RodC, the digital rights management system in iTunes is definitely an issue, but it's also definitely not the case that any music you don't buy from iTunes cannot be sync'd. In fact, most of the music on my Mac / iPhone is from CDs I've ripped and it works fine. If you're seeing "cannot sync", it's for another reason.

I am having trouble getting music from a cd to my iphone 3. I am able of getting cds on my ipod but when I try to sync or manually drag the songs to iphone is shows a circle with a line slashed through it. I am able to get anything I purchase from ITunes on it with no problem. It is driving me nuts. Please help.

Hey :)
I don't have a mac, which I think is the problem.
"The usual summary screen" does not pop up for me, all I get is something that only imports songs and pictures from the iphone to the computer... And it looks nothing like yours.

What do I do? I managed to make the list and drag all the songs over, but there really is no way to get it onto the iPhone.

Feel free to email me this, seeing as there are alot of comments to keep track of.

Hi Dave,

New to the iPhone....

I followed your instructions correctly. However, when I go into the Music section on my iPhone 4s nothing is there. Please help....

Ahhh...maybe I have solved it...or I am a fool !

I dragged my new playlist(in the left hand column of iTunes) up to my devices and dropped it into my phone....and now the songs are going onto my iPhone :)

Did I miss something ?

Please don't call me any names, but how do you drag a music file from iTunes to a Playlist. You've assumed that is really easy but when I try to drag it, the new playlist doesn't highlight. Thank you in advance.

Thanks again,

Hi Dave. Ive followed your instructions and ticked the "selected playlists, etc"...but my (very large) "Entire Music Library" has been wiped off my phone, including several playlists that took me hours to create:( How do I avoid this again??? As I regularly update my music collection. Cheers Mel

I just wanted to say thank you, I followed your directions made a couple of mistakes but have been able to make play lists and move them on to my iphone.

Store loaded ipod/itunes to iphone 4G. Now, I have no music on ipod. Tried to sync using instructions & says it is downloading the music and still no music on ipod.

Posted by: Carol at January 25, 2012 1:56 PM

Is there a way to do this without syncing? I
've got music on my work iTunes which I want on my phone, but don't want to sync my phone and lose what's already on it. This seems a pretty backwards way of doing things if you have to have a workaround.

Posted by: DMC at January 26, 2012 2:35 AM

When I do this procedure, at the end it says "an iphone can be synced with only one itunes library at a time. erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iphone with the contents of this itunes library"

So if I erase and sync.. will it erase everything on my iphone.. all apps, contacts, all stuff?

Is there a way to just get the music on there without anything happening to the iphone?
