What cool things can I do with Twitter?

Now that I've gotten into the world of Twittering, short one-line status updates on what I'm doing and where I am for my friends, I am curious if there are any additional secret capabilities in Twitter that I should know about?

Dave's Answer:

Well, I don't know if they're secret since they're actually documented in the help system, but there are a bunch of different things you can do in Twitter that are interesting nonetheless.

For example, if you are talking to someone and find out that they also Twitter (I have a hard time not saying "they're also a Twit") you can easily follow their twitterstream by sending:

follow twittername

To follow me, for example, send follow davetaylor.

Tired of their updates? Use:

off twittername

Want to know who is following you? Send:

followers

(caveat: when I tried this it didn't work, but maybe you'll have better luck than I)

Here's a more useful one: you can use Twitter to send people private messages that don't show up in either your or their twitterstream, but instead go as separate messages to the receiver's registered email address. You do this trick with:

d twittername message

So if you wanted to send me a private message on Twitter, for example, you could use d davetaylor harry potter HD dvds on sale at Borders. you want? and no-one else would know we'd communicated. I use this quite frequently in Twitterland, actually.

One more tip: if you are referring to someone else with a Twitter account, you can link to their Twitter account automatically by simply using the notation:

@twittername

Want to Twitter your friends about my Twitter account? You could use: Check out @DaveTaylor to find out what Dave's doing and when that Twitter goes out on the network, "@DaveTaylor" will be hyperlinked to my own profile where people can read my own updates intermingled with information from my friends.

That's about all I can suggest with Twitter as I don't know that there are any other things you can do. It's a rudimentary system, but that's part of its elegance...
