Contact groups in Google Gmail?

I'm a big fan of Google's Gmail service, but I really wish there was a way for me to organize groups of people together into a mailing list or group, so I could type, say, "family" and have it go to my Mom, sister, brother, and so on. Is that doable and I just don't know about it, or is this still a capability beyond Gmail?

Dave's Answer:

This feature, what Google calls Contact Groups, was just recently added to the popular Gmail service, as it happens, and here's exactly how to create that list for your family:

Log in to your Gmail account.

Click Contacts on the left side of the page.

If you want to work off your existing list of contacts, simply check the boxes adjacent to the individuals in the "Frequently Mailed" or "All Contacts" tabs, then choose "New group..." from the "Add contact to..." pop-up menu.

Or, if you want to create a new list from scratch, click on the new Groups tab, then click Create Group:

Google Gmail Contact Groups

Since I don't have any groups (yet!) it's blank and offers a simple shortcut, but notice on the top right the Create Group link. Click on it, and you can start building your group:

Google Gmail Contact Group Demonstration

That's all there is to it. Nice, simple, and elegant, as we've learned to expect from the Google team.

Oh, and say "Hi" to your Mom too. :-)

I have a gmail account and i have been unable to even open my account due to some warning that keeps popping up about an expired security certificate. Even when I try to bypass it, the website just loops into this never ending cycle of tyring to open but never does. Do you have any answers or solutions to this problem? This is one thing I don't like about gmail. I don't feel that there is any support if there are problems...but I do like gmail for the most part. thanks for you time.

Posted by: Marla at January 19, 2006 12:00 PM

Marla, this is an obvious one, but make sure that the date and time on your computer is set properly. If you're way off, valid sites can seem to have invalid certificates!

Dave,

I have a question.

I opened an email that I received from an organization that contained internal links to it (If you click on the link, it takes you to a different part of the email a.k.a. anchors i.e. back to top). I decided to forward the email to my friend (and myself), upon clicking on the same link in the forwarded version, the system opened up a new internet window that said Gmail instead of taking me to the desired part of the email.

Do you know why this would happen and a way to fix this?

Thank you,

Ron Balofsky

As I use only my cell phone to access the Internet, it is not possible to spend much time onlne. Is there a way that I can use Eudora or Outlook Express online with Gmail only to send new email and download received messages and do all reading, replying and creating offline?? If so, can you tell me how to set it up? I haven't had any luck with this. Thanks for your prompt response to this matter.

I want to set up Web Clips , but there is no option to add clips in the settings menu. Where have all the good tabs gone? There's a piping hot chai (or iced, however you prefer) in it for you, Dave.

Posted by: emily martin at May 17, 2007 1:04 PM

Tony, Emily, these sort of questions are answered elsewhere on my site. For example, you can get lots of info about Google Mail with this link:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/about_gmail.html

and Emily, here's an article specifically addressing how to work with Web Clips within Gmail:

Hope that those are helpful!

I have been using gmail for a long time and am having a problem with the newer version of gmail. The problem being when I forward an email that contains an image, the image does not transmit with the email but all of the text appears. Now when I use the older version to forward the same email the image does transmit to its destination. So the pain in the ass is that every time I open my gmail it defaults to using the newer version. Is there a fix for this?

Sat 22nd March 2008 Karin from South Australia glad2bvegetarian@yahoo.com.au

Dear Dave! (Sorry if I may have sent this one twice, but I'm not very experienced yet, I hope you understand, Yours gratefully Karin

1) I hope that I'm here on the correct web site and that you can help me!

2) Does your service cost anything? (I really need to know, as I am only on a pension and I do not have a credit card. (I still use an old fashioned cheque Book).

3) I have tried and keep on trying to create a new E-mail Address in G-mail as well as in hotmail, but again and again I'm constantly informed, that my user name and password do not match. Then I have to start all over again, and it repeats itself on and on. Why is that, when I'm 100 percent sure, that I typed in the correct ones?

4) Is it possible to be able to change an e-mail address user name? And if yes, how? (Also how can I delete the old e-mail address and old password? (Esp. when I forgot my password)?

5) I really wonder, is this finally the e-mail to get onto the gmail and hotmail teams??? I actually had wanted to e-mail them directly!

6) Is there a toll-free Phone No to any of those?

7) I used to once have an msn e-mail address which was (kbasse@msn.com and so I used to be able to get into msn messenger, but that too, doesn't seem to work any more. It
Always seems to be the same. When I want to get into msn or create a new hotmail account for myself, suddenly my user name and password doesn't match, why? ? ? I'm really desperate, what to do?

8) I sincerely need to know, what I can do, as I am a great Fan of Andre Rieu, (You know, the new Walz King and his wonderful

Johann Strauss Orchestra AND CHOIR? Andre Rieu is that wonderful Violinist/Conductor from Holland. He is reviving all the music of the composers of many years and centuries ago, such as Mozart and many others).

9) Therefore I really want to be able to join in on the Aussie Fan Website, so I can talk with others here in Australia as well as oversee.

10) I am originally from Hamburg, West Germany, and I even discovered a wonderful Andre Rieu Fan Website in msn in Germany, which I would really love to join in, but how can I, when I'm not even able to access msn or google or hotmail in any way shape or form???

11) I'm on broadband, (still with bigpond, but only til around 10th April 2008, After that date my BIgpond Contract with Telstra runs out, (thank goodness), because that one is very
Expensive. (That's why I gave you my web-based Yahoo e-mail address).

12) My Commuter is an Acer, with Windows XP, but I use Office 2000, (because I love that little Office assistant the genius, or Professor Einstein), Although I know, he is only an animated figure, I love him, and don't want to be without him any more. He is so funny, (I think you know, what I mean)?

13) I also have an office clipboard, which I use all the time, (although it only has about 12 fields in it, in which to copy into, (you know this select, copy and paste)? But it seems to me, that Microsoft doesn't really want me to remain in Office 2000, and so my computer screen keeps freezing up, (especially when I try to copy a website into it). Keeps on freezing up, and then I can't do a thing, accept try to press CTRL, ALT and Delete key on my keybord, all at the same time, which then brings up the task manager.

14) After I try to delete some from the task manager, all my word documents disappear, and even when I have saved them in my Document Folder, I often still cannot find them any more, I wonder why that is, (even when my

word documents have been backed up)

15) As you can imagine, especially after I have worked on a Word Document for many hours, for it to suddenly disappear, and then having to start all over again, is indeed very time

consuming and frustrating, so what am I doing wrong, that this constantly happens to me? ? ?

16) Am I the only one, (that these horrible things I mentioned here), seem to happen to? Or have you received also complaints like mine from others? I just wonder about that>---

17) My current Anti-Virus Protection Program is McCafee.

18) In spite of being on broadband, it seems to be very slow, I wonder why?

19) I hope I have been able to give you all the info, that you need, and that you can help me with advice or suggestions of what I can best do.

20) I thank you kindly in advance for your (hopefully) positive Reply

Yours truly Karin from South Australia.

Hi

I am not sure if this would help, but any assistance will. Someone has changed our gmail password, I have completed the form on the "take over", I have submitted it and now Gmail wrote to me stating that they have disabled my account. We are running a touring business, and now this gmail address is on all our brochures. How can I possibly get the email address back and just reset the password.

regards

Anel
