Connect to the Internet with my Sony PSP?

I love my Sony PSP, but I cannot figure out how to get successfully connected to the Internet. I know it's a wifi system, I know I need to be able to see an access point, but I cannot get it all working. Help!

Dave's Answer:

You are definitely not alone in your quest to get the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) device successfully connected to the Internet. In fact, it's hard enough that this is probably one of the most common questions I see here at AskDaveTaylor, so I think it deserves a long, full explanation. If you follow along step-by-step, I'm sure you'll succeed.

First off, you need to get to the main menu from wherever you are on your PSP. You can do that by pressing the Home button, a tiny button just to the lower left of the screen.

Now you'll want to move left (pressing the "<" button) until you get to Settings, then down (pressing the "V" button) until you get to Network Settings:

Sony PSP: Network Settings

Now you'll have two choices: "Ad Hoc" is when you want to connection two PSPs together with any sort of Internet wifi base station / access point involved, and "Infrastructure Mode" is when you connect to your local wifi device. The latter's what we want:

Sony PSP: Settings: Infrastructure Mode

You'll probably only have the one choice of New Connection, but if you don't, choose it anyway:

Sony PSP: Settings: New Connection

First option is to specify a mnemonic connection name. The default here is "Connection 2" but yours might be "Connection 1", or similar. I recommend you actually enter a different name so you'll be able to remember what location works where.

Sony PSP: Settings: Connection Name

To enter a new connection name, press the "X" button and you'll get to the "keyboard" screen:

Sony PSP: Settings: Enter Connection Name

When you're done struggling to enter your selected name :-) move to the green "Enter" box and press the "X" button. Now you'll be ready for the big important step: a Network Scan:

Sony PSP: Settings: Network Scan

If everything's working well with your device and you've turned on the WLAN switch (How to turn on the PSP WLAN Switch) you'll see the following status message:

Sony PSP: Settings: Scanning: Wait

Hopefully, you'll see at least one network listed, if not more. If you don't see any networks, then you're out of luck. If the only networks you see have some sort of security setting, either WPA or WEP, then you must know the security password to access that network.

Once you're ready, the next step you'll want to take is to select an access point:

Sony PSP: Settings: Select Access Point

In this case I'm going to select Steve Hardesty since it's the strongest network with the Security setting of "None":

Sony PSP: Settings: Settings

Now you'll have a chance to confirm your security setting from the different choices. Notice that the default is just about always the correct choice, which you can select by pushing the ">" button again and again:

Sony PSP: Security Settings

Now you can also step right past the Address Settings:

Sony PSP: Address Settings

You'll get a confirmation screen that shows all the settings you've specified:

Sony PSP: Setting List

Press the ">" button again, and you'll be able to save your settings:

Sony PSP: Save Network Settings

That's what you'll want to do: press "X".

Now, the most important step in the process - to Test Connection.

Sony PSP: Test Network Connection

You'll most definitely want to do this! Press "X" to start the test...

Sony PSP: Testing Access Point

If something's wrong, you might end up seeing this:

Sony PSP: Network Connection Error

If you do see that, then try moving closer to the wifi access point and rerunning the test, perhaps that'll fix things. Otherwise, try a different network connection.

Hopefully, however, you'll find that your connection works just fine:

Sony PSP: Settings: Connection Success

If you've gotten here, congratulations, you're online!

Let's just quickly test it by going online and checking the latest news. Again press Home but this time use the ">" button to move all the way to the right, then "V" to go down to Internet Browser:

Sony PSP: Internet Browser

Since you've already specified a connection, it'll use that:

Sony PSP: Connecting to Access Point

Everything should work just fine, and you'll either get to a blank page, the default page for your Web browser, or the page you've specified as your default. In my case, it's Google News:

Sony PSP: Network Connection @ Google News

That's all there is to it!

Sorry to say that if you don't have any wireless Internet access points near you, there's really no way to proceed, Robert. You need to find an access point. Perhaps your local public library? Good luck!

Yo set everything to automatic, go to your router setup, usually if u type your locas ip it will show you some confg page u can use. "check ur user maunal for the wireless router" oneu have figure it out u select WEB security and set it TO STATIC, once it gives u the key just use it in the WEP key and that should work just fine "in my psp for some reason is does not take the "g" wireless conf i used "B" so try that too.

hey, i have a ?, Is it true that you can get full connection to the internet on your psp at any starbucks?

Dave Taylor said, on March 30, 2006 12:37 AM:

Charles, if your non-WEP connection times out, it means that you probably have some other encryption password needed (WPA?) or that perhaps you're using 802.11g, which the PSP doesn't support.

Jason, life would be nice if Starbucks offered free wifi, but it doesn't. It uses the T-Mobile system and you need a password to connect and you pay by the hour...

I haven't seen one solution to the 804 browser messages anywhere on forums.
One moment working fine, the next not and havn't been able to access since.
My view is that there's a malicious bug out there.
Tried restoring settings, online diagnostics - nothing works. Do not believe the postings that Sony replace these "defective" PSPs. They do not even seem aware of the problem.

Hello Dave, I've recently been having some problems with getting the internet of my PSP. I understand the steps needed to get the internet up and running, but here's the problem. Sometimes when I connect to the internet on the PSP using someone else's connection it works fine and than sometimes if I want to connect to the same guy it doesn't what gives? I also get the "a coonection error as occurred" message and I set up everything as automatic when trying to hook up the PSP to the web. Why do I always get that message and of course I also try connecting to internet through my SMC wireless router (with all the settting set to automatic) which is also giving me hassles and the "signal strength" is like 90% to 100% strong. What gives with those problems.

Mike L said, on June 6, 2006 2:05 AM:

Dave,

I'm trying to connect my PSP to my home wireless Access Point. My AP has a static IP address and when I try and set it up on the PSP it won't save it. i.e. when you enter the manual IP address you have to press the arrow back once the IP address is entered and you cannot proceed of the next screen unless you select "automatic" .. hope that makes sense!

Hi, I actually have a question. I recently got a psp and I am having a couple of problems. First, like everyone else, I can't seem to find any access points. Can I buy anything to help make chances better of recieving a signal? Also, I found a website that allows to me download games if I pay a membership fee. While I tried out the trial version to see if I could actually do it, it let me, but now I can't transfer the downloaded games and movies onto the actual psp. Any suggestions? Something about my version of the psp is not capable to maximizing the files is the tip I recieved from someone else. The last problem is actually me seeking an opinion. There is someone in a city near us that is known to hack into psps to put a bunch of games and movies in it. He charges $45 and we had a friend that did it, but I am terrified that he will mess up my psp. If anyone could lend me a hand here, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Dave i have read your explaination for the wireless access, would you have a simliar one for wired? I have run the router set up from square one to install at the beginning both of my computers get to it(one wired one wireless) but the PS3 will not. No switch on PS3 20gb although it has the ethernet cable port. I have put together cat 5 with rj45 plugs and tested the cable, of course all good. Upon testing connnection for PS3 it times out, and there is a window on screen saying there is no ethernet cable connected. has to be something i have missed. Thank you very much it is very nice that you responed to so many people

Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you, Dave, for all your helpful information by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!

I will never send you any unsolicited email. Ever.
