Connect to the Internet with my Sony PSP?

I love my Sony PSP, but I cannot figure out how to get successfully connected to the Internet. I know it's a wifi system, I know I need to be able to see an access point, but I cannot get it all working. Help!

Dave's Answer:

You are definitely not alone in your quest to get the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) device successfully connected to the Internet. In fact, it's hard enough that this is probably one of the most common questions I see here at AskDaveTaylor, so I think it deserves a long, full explanation. If you follow along step-by-step, I'm sure you'll succeed.

First off, you need to get to the main menu from wherever you are on your PSP. You can do that by pressing the Home button, a tiny button just to the lower left of the screen.

Now you'll want to move left (pressing the "<" button) until you get to Settings, then down (pressing the "V" button) until you get to Network Settings:

Sony PSP: Network Settings

Now you'll have two choices: "Ad Hoc" is when you want to connection two PSPs together with any sort of Internet wifi base station / access point involved, and "Infrastructure Mode" is when you connect to your local wifi device. The latter's what we want:

Sony PSP: Settings: Infrastructure Mode

You'll probably only have the one choice of New Connection, but if you don't, choose it anyway:

Sony PSP: Settings: New Connection

First option is to specify a mnemonic connection name. The default here is "Connection 2" but yours might be "Connection 1", or similar. I recommend you actually enter a different name so you'll be able to remember what location works where.

Sony PSP: Settings: Connection Name

To enter a new connection name, press the "X" button and you'll get to the "keyboard" screen:

Sony PSP: Settings: Enter Connection Name

When you're done struggling to enter your selected name :-) move to the green "Enter" box and press the "X" button. Now you'll be ready for the big important step: a Network Scan:

Sony PSP: Settings: Network Scan

If everything's working well with your device and you've turned on the WLAN switch (How to turn on the PSP WLAN Switch) you'll see the following status message:

Sony PSP: Settings: Scanning: Wait

Hopefully, you'll see at least one network listed, if not more. If you don't see any networks, then you're out of luck. If the only networks you see have some sort of security setting, either WPA or WEP, then you must know the security password to access that network.

Once you're ready, the next step you'll want to take is to select an access point:

Sony PSP: Settings: Select Access Point

In this case I'm going to select Steve Hardesty since it's the strongest network with the Security setting of "None":

Sony PSP: Settings: Settings

Now you'll have a chance to confirm your security setting from the different choices. Notice that the default is just about always the correct choice, which you can select by pushing the ">" button again and again:

Sony PSP: Security Settings

Now you can also step right past the Address Settings:

Sony PSP: Address Settings

You'll get a confirmation screen that shows all the settings you've specified:

Sony PSP: Setting List

Press the ">" button again, and you'll be able to save your settings:

Sony PSP: Save Network Settings

That's what you'll want to do: press "X".

Now, the most important step in the process - to Test Connection.

Sony PSP: Test Network Connection

You'll most definitely want to do this! Press "X" to start the test...

Sony PSP: Testing Access Point

If something's wrong, you might end up seeing this:

Sony PSP: Network Connection Error

If you do see that, then try moving closer to the wifi access point and rerunning the test, perhaps that'll fix things. Otherwise, try a different network connection.

Hopefully, however, you'll find that your connection works just fine:

Sony PSP: Settings: Connection Success

If you've gotten here, congratulations, you're online!

Let's just quickly test it by going online and checking the latest news. Again press Home but this time use the ">" button to move all the way to the right, then "V" to go down to Internet Browser:

Sony PSP: Internet Browser

Since you've already specified a connection, it'll use that:

Sony PSP: Connecting to Access Point

Everything should work just fine, and you'll either get to a blank page, the default page for your Web browser, or the page you've specified as your default. In my case, it's Google News:

Sony PSP: Network Connection @ Google News

That's all there is to it!

Hey Dave. This question I am asking you goes to the one "connect to the internet with my sony psp". Each time I try to connect to the internet, there's something that says "A connection error has occured. The access point was not detected".Help me Dave.

Posted by: Robert at February 24, 2006 7:01 PM

Sorry to say that if you don't have any wireless Internet access points near you, there's really no way to proceed, Robert. You need to find an access point. Perhaps your local public library? Good luck!

Posted by: ricky at March 20, 2006 8:02 PM

Yo set everything to automatic, go to your router setup, usually if u type your locas ip it will show you some confg page u can use. "check ur user maunal for the wireless router" oneu have figure it out u select WEB security and set it TO STATIC, once it gives u the key just use it in the WEP key and that should work just fine "in my psp for some reason is does not take the "g" wireless conf i used "B" so try that too.

Posted by: here is how you do it. at March 21, 2006 9:35 PM

this is great and i can get to the acces point but then it says
"a connection error has occurred
the attempt to obtain the IP address timed out"

i think its because i need a WEP key please tell me how to get that.

Posted by: matthew at March 24, 2006 10:45 AM

Please see the following to learn how to get your WEP key:

What if your connection with no WEP key keeps timing out?

Posted by: Charles at March 29, 2006 5:30 PM

hey, i have a ?, Is it true that you can get full connection to the internet on your psp at any starbucks?

Posted by: jason at March 29, 2006 8:07 PM

Charles, if your non-WEP connection times out, it means that you probably have some other encryption password needed (WPA?) or that perhaps you're using 802.11g, which the PSP doesn't support.

Jason, life would be nice if Starbucks offered free wifi, but it doesn't. It uses the T-Mobile system and you need a password to connect and you pay by the hour...

I haven't seen one solution to the 804 browser messages anywhere on forums.
One moment working fine, the next not and havn't been able to access since.
My view is that there's a malicious bug out there.
Tried restoring settings, online diagnostics - nothing works. Do not believe the postings that Sony replace these "defective" PSPs. They do not even seem aware of the problem.

I am trying to connect my PSP to my buddies using AD HOC setting with Automatic detect and the two won't detect each other, what gives?

Posted by: CaptJB at May 28, 2006 8:38 AM

Hello Dave, I've recently been having some problems with getting the internet of my PSP. I understand the steps needed to get the internet up and running, but here's the problem. Sometimes when I connect to the internet on the PSP using someone else's connection it works fine and than sometimes if I want to connect to the same guy it doesn't what gives? I also get the "a coonection error as occurred" message and I set up everything as automatic when trying to hook up the PSP to the web. Why do I always get that message and of course I also try connecting to internet through my SMC wireless router (with all the settting set to automatic) which is also giving me hassles and the "signal strength" is like 90% to 100% strong. What gives with those problems.

Posted by: Harry at June 3, 2006 10:24 PM

Dave,

I'm trying to connect my PSP to my home wireless Access Point. My AP has a static IP address and when I try and set it up on the PSP it won't save it. i.e. when you enter the manual IP address you have to press the arrow back once the IP address is entered and you cannot proceed of the next screen unless you select "automatic" .. hope that makes sense!

there ar too many people with issues for sony not to provide explicit instructions -

is it true that psp connection doesn't support wireless "g" - that's what most current routers protocol.

Hi, I actually have a question. I recently got a psp and I am having a couple of problems. First, like everyone else, I can't seem to find any access points. Can I buy anything to help make chances better of recieving a signal? Also, I found a website that allows to me download games if I pay a membership fee. While I tried out the trial version to see if I could actually do it, it let me, but now I can't transfer the downloaded games and movies onto the actual psp. Any suggestions? Something about my version of the psp is not capable to maximizing the files is the tip I recieved from someone else. The last problem is actually me seeking an opinion. There is someone in a city near us that is known to hack into psps to put a bunch of games and movies in it. He charges $45 and we had a friend that did it, but I am terrified that he will mess up my psp. If anyone could lend me a hand here, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Dave i have read your explaination for the wireless access, would you have a simliar one for wired? I have run the router set up from square one to install at the beginning both of my computers get to it(one wired one wireless) but the PS3 will not. No switch on PS3 20gb although it has the ethernet cable port. I have put together cat 5 with rj45 plugs and tested the cable, of course all good. Upon testing connnection for PS3 it times out, and there is a window on screen saying there is no ethernet cable connected. has to be something i have missed. Thank you very much it is very nice that you responed to so many people

Posted by: robert at February 23, 2007 7:07 PM

Hi dave. I've been browsing these board while looking for my own solution to the psp's dns error with the number 80410418. I've entered everything correctly but there was one very little mistake that i did with a text error rather than entering an incorrect numbers for dns, gateway, ect. I think many people with 80410418 error also made. The problem was that while entering the dns, i made the mistake of entering an unwanted space before the number 1 in the ip which came out to be "192.168. 1.xxx" instead of "192.168.1.xxx". It's no difference if you're not paying attention.

As you can see there should not be a space infront of 1 inside the correct IP (or any spaces after or before any of the periods). Because of the psp display screen, a careless individual might missed that small space which would result in the dns 80410418 error.

I've read many of the post which stated that testing of connection resulted in 100% success, but when trying to connect to the internet they received the dns 80410418 error. This was also my situation and it was because of the little space before the number 1 inside of the ip.

If you've already found the solution, then never mind about this. Good day to you sir. Thank you for your work on the site.

Ive been haveing a HUGE problem with connecting my PSP
It tells me Error 80410A0B when i try to scan for my wireless net.
Can ya' help at all?
I hope you can, email me quickly please!
Frankly I have a laptop, and a DS system that work without effort in the home off a 2wire, why will this thing not detect it?

Posted by: Mario at March 17, 2007 7:54 PM

Same problem as many others here, and seen elsewhere on the web.

Error 80410A0B when trying to scan or connect (even when I manually enter all the wireless settings I know work for our laptops). My network is configured to support 11B as well as G, but no dice.

I've read threads elsewhere that it has to do with the PSP's WLan power-save settings etc. Tried that, no success. Has *anybody* found a reliable workaround to the Error 80410A0B problem?

If so, please post it here (emailing danforth233 @ hotmail dot com would be nice too).

If there's no solution posted, why on earth haven't Sony documented it somewhere, seems common enough!

Please note that I have a lot of different PSP Internet troubleshooting articles on this site: go to the little search box just below the big red "Ask Dave a Question" button and type in "PSP Internet" to see what I mean.

As far as installing an IM client, Microsoft Office or even Windows on a PSP, I have never seen a legit, trustworthy demonstration of such capabilities and as far as I can tell, the PSP is most assuredly NOT a personal computer nor does it have the basic capabilities of a PC, so I can't imagine HOW you could install anything like that. And yet, people keep telling me they've seen WinXP running, so perhaps someone just needs to explain how this all works here so I can be enlightened? :-)

Posted by: skittles at June 10, 2007 2:45 PM

Hmmm... I think the PSP needs 802.11b enabled on the router you're trying to connect to. I couldn't connect at all when I had my Netgear DG834G set to 'g' only.

I get different problems though. Both the PS3 and PSP can be set up and connect no worries. Restart them and try half an hour later and you get 'access point not detected'. If you go to 'Scan' on either and keep retrying the router appears, then disappears, then appears... you get my drift.

Is it the router or the PS3/PSP? Mmmm... my sons computer connects to the same router wirelessly and doesn't have a problem. BTW the PS3 and PSP report signal strength between 90 and 100%.

Bizarre.

Hello.. I got the Network problem with my psp.. I Have Entered all the things that should be entered.. And I Have followed your guide above.. But when i test the connection it says: "A connection error has occured. The Key information exchange timed out".. And then i move closer to the connection point but it still says the same..

Help Me Dave!

can you play computer games on the psp?

Posted by: jesse at July 9, 2007 6:38 PM

I was wondering..if I got a internet router like NETGEAR or something, would my PSP pick it up?

Posted by: ahdil at July 9, 2007 11:08 PM

Terrance: that means you don't have a wifi network in range so you can't connect to the Internet.

Jesse: uh, yeah. :-)

Ahdll: You can definitely use that, but make sure it's "b" protocol (that is, 802.11b, not 802.11g, the more modern protocol) so that the PSP can see it.

I was having the 80110404 error. My PSP was finding the network, and it was connecting. I just couldn't get on the internet. Tried auto and manual config. Had my wireless router configured properly. I noticed my router had a 3rd DNS entry. So I manually entered that third entry into my PSP as the first DNS server, and left the second one blank. Voila! I am now online. So, poke around in your router settings and look for a 3rd DNS entry. Good luck!

Hi Dave,

I did all you said to get online on my psp. But its giving me the same error message - 80410418 and not able to connect.
I have different access points and tried all but still no go. With some access points I do get the IP address, signal strength , etc. but it says at the end of the screen that internet connection failed.

Thanks.

Hey there, I hope im not getting on your nerves by asking this question, cause i have been reading most of the questions above and a lot of them are actually the same, and i saw your answer to one of them, but my situation just doesnt fit! I have a very reliable access point which i have used again and again, (Most recently yesterday afternoon) and today i attempted to get on the internet only for it to tell me that "A connection error has occurred, the attempt to obtain the IP adress timed out" I know that it is supported on the psp cause ive used it a lot, and there isnt another "encrypted password" like you were saying. Im so upset! I have no idea why its telling me this, is there anything i couldve done to make it say this????? PLEASE send an answer to Peace_hippie420@yahoo.com Thank you VERY MUCH!
