Connect to the Internet with my Sony PSP?

I love my Sony PSP, but I cannot figure out how to get successfully connected to the Internet. I know it's a wifi system, I know I need to be able to see an access point, but I cannot get it all working. Help!

Dave's Answer:

You are definitely not alone in your quest to get the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) device successfully connected to the Internet. In fact, it's hard enough that this is probably one of the most common questions I see here at AskDaveTaylor, so I think it deserves a long, full explanation. If you follow along step-by-step, I'm sure you'll succeed.

First off, you need to get to the main menu from wherever you are on your PSP. You can do that by pressing the Home button, a tiny button just to the lower left of the screen.

Now you'll want to move left (pressing the "<" button) until you get to Settings, then down (pressing the "V" button) until you get to Network Settings:

Sony PSP: Network Settings

Now you'll have two choices: "Ad Hoc" is when you want to connection two PSPs together with any sort of Internet wifi base station / access point involved, and "Infrastructure Mode" is when you connect to your local wifi device. The latter's what we want:

Sony PSP: Settings: Infrastructure Mode

You'll probably only have the one choice of New Connection, but if you don't, choose it anyway:

Sony PSP: Settings: New Connection

First option is to specify a mnemonic connection name. The default here is "Connection 2" but yours might be "Connection 1", or similar. I recommend you actually enter a different name so you'll be able to remember what location works where.

Sony PSP: Settings: Connection Name

To enter a new connection name, press the "X" button and you'll get to the "keyboard" screen:

Sony PSP: Settings: Enter Connection Name

When you're done struggling to enter your selected name :-) move to the green "Enter" box and press the "X" button. Now you'll be ready for the big important step: a Network Scan:

Sony PSP: Settings: Network Scan

If everything's working well with your device and you've turned on the WLAN switch (How to turn on the PSP WLAN Switch) you'll see the following status message:

Sony PSP: Settings: Scanning: Wait

Hopefully, you'll see at least one network listed, if not more. If you don't see any networks, then you're out of luck. If the only networks you see have some sort of security setting, either WPA or WEP, then you must know the security password to access that network.

Once you're ready, the next step you'll want to take is to select an access point:

Sony PSP: Settings: Select Access Point

In this case I'm going to select Steve Hardesty since it's the strongest network with the Security setting of "None":

Sony PSP: Settings: Settings

Now you'll have a chance to confirm your security setting from the different choices. Notice that the default is just about always the correct choice, which you can select by pushing the ">" button again and again:

Sony PSP: Security Settings

Now you can also step right past the Address Settings:

Sony PSP: Address Settings

You'll get a confirmation screen that shows all the settings you've specified:

Sony PSP: Setting List

Press the ">" button again, and you'll be able to save your settings:

Sony PSP: Save Network Settings

That's what you'll want to do: press "X".

Now, the most important step in the process - to Test Connection.

Sony PSP: Test Network Connection

You'll most definitely want to do this! Press "X" to start the test...

Sony PSP: Testing Access Point

If something's wrong, you might end up seeing this:

Sony PSP: Network Connection Error

If you do see that, then try moving closer to the wifi access point and rerunning the test, perhaps that'll fix things. Otherwise, try a different network connection.

Hopefully, however, you'll find that your connection works just fine:

Sony PSP: Settings: Connection Success

If you've gotten here, congratulations, you're online!

Let's just quickly test it by going online and checking the latest news. Again press Home but this time use the ">" button to move all the way to the right, then "V" to go down to Internet Browser:

Sony PSP: Internet Browser

Since you've already specified a connection, it'll use that:

Sony PSP: Connecting to Access Point

Everything should work just fine, and you'll either get to a blank page, the default page for your Web browser, or the page you've specified as your default. In my case, it's Google News:

Sony PSP: Network Connection @ Google News

That's all there is to it!

Hey Dave. This question I am asking you goes to the one "connect to the internet with my sony psp". Each time I try to connect to the internet, there's something that says "A connection error has occured. The access point was not detected".Help me Dave.

Posted by: Robert at February 24, 2006 7:01 PM

Sorry to say that if you don't have any wireless Internet access points near you, there's really no way to proceed, Robert. You need to find an access point. Perhaps your local public library? Good luck!

Posted by: ricky at March 20, 2006 8:02 PM

Yo set everything to automatic, go to your router setup, usually if u type your locas ip it will show you some confg page u can use. "check ur user maunal for the wireless router" oneu have figure it out u select WEB security and set it TO STATIC, once it gives u the key just use it in the WEP key and that should work just fine "in my psp for some reason is does not take the "g" wireless conf i used "B" so try that too.

Posted by: here is how you do it. at March 21, 2006 9:35 PM

this is great and i can get to the acces point but then it says
"a connection error has occurred
the attempt to obtain the IP address timed out"

i think its because i need a WEP key please tell me how to get that.

Posted by: matthew at March 24, 2006 10:45 AM

Please see the following to learn how to get your WEP key:

What if your connection with no WEP key keeps timing out?

Posted by: Charles at March 29, 2006 5:30 PM

hey, i have a ?, Is it true that you can get full connection to the internet on your psp at any starbucks?

Posted by: jason at March 29, 2006 8:07 PM

Charles, if your non-WEP connection times out, it means that you probably have some other encryption password needed (WPA?) or that perhaps you're using 802.11g, which the PSP doesn't support.

Jason, life would be nice if Starbucks offered free wifi, but it doesn't. It uses the T-Mobile system and you need a password to connect and you pay by the hour...

I haven't seen one solution to the 804 browser messages anywhere on forums.
One moment working fine, the next not and havn't been able to access since.
My view is that there's a malicious bug out there.
Tried restoring settings, online diagnostics - nothing works. Do not believe the postings that Sony replace these "defective" PSPs. They do not even seem aware of the problem.

I am trying to connect my PSP to my buddies using AD HOC setting with Automatic detect and the two won't detect each other, what gives?

Posted by: CaptJB at May 28, 2006 8:38 AM

Hello Dave, I've recently been having some problems with getting the internet of my PSP. I understand the steps needed to get the internet up and running, but here's the problem. Sometimes when I connect to the internet on the PSP using someone else's connection it works fine and than sometimes if I want to connect to the same guy it doesn't what gives? I also get the "a coonection error as occurred" message and I set up everything as automatic when trying to hook up the PSP to the web. Why do I always get that message and of course I also try connecting to internet through my SMC wireless router (with all the settting set to automatic) which is also giving me hassles and the "signal strength" is like 90% to 100% strong. What gives with those problems.

Posted by: Harry at June 3, 2006 10:24 PM

Dave,

I'm trying to connect my PSP to my home wireless Access Point. My AP has a static IP address and when I try and set it up on the PSP it won't save it. i.e. when you enter the manual IP address you have to press the arrow back once the IP address is entered and you cannot proceed of the next screen unless you select "automatic" .. hope that makes sense!

there ar too many people with issues for sony not to provide explicit instructions -

is it true that psp connection doesn't support wireless "g" - that's what most current routers protocol.

Hi, I actually have a question. I recently got a psp and I am having a couple of problems. First, like everyone else, I can't seem to find any access points. Can I buy anything to help make chances better of recieving a signal? Also, I found a website that allows to me download games if I pay a membership fee. While I tried out the trial version to see if I could actually do it, it let me, but now I can't transfer the downloaded games and movies onto the actual psp. Any suggestions? Something about my version of the psp is not capable to maximizing the files is the tip I recieved from someone else. The last problem is actually me seeking an opinion. There is someone in a city near us that is known to hack into psps to put a bunch of games and movies in it. He charges $45 and we had a friend that did it, but I am terrified that he will mess up my psp. If anyone could lend me a hand here, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Dave i have read your explaination for the wireless access, would you have a simliar one for wired? I have run the router set up from square one to install at the beginning both of my computers get to it(one wired one wireless) but the PS3 will not. No switch on PS3 20gb although it has the ethernet cable port. I have put together cat 5 with rj45 plugs and tested the cable, of course all good. Upon testing connnection for PS3 it times out, and there is a window on screen saying there is no ethernet cable connected. has to be something i have missed. Thank you very much it is very nice that you responed to so many people

Hi dave. I've been browsing these board while looking for my own solution to the psp's dns error with the number 80410418. I've entered everything correctly but there was one very little mistake that i did with a text error rather than entering an incorrect numbers for dns, gateway, ect. I think many people with 80410418 error also made. The problem was that while entering the dns, i made the mistake of entering an unwanted space before the number 1 in the ip which came out to be "192.168. 1.xxx" instead of "192.168.1.xxx". It's no difference if you're not paying attention.

As you can see there should not be a space infront of 1 inside the correct IP (or any spaces after or before any of the periods). Because of the psp display screen, a careless individual might missed that small space which would result in the dns 80410418 error.

I've read many of the post which stated that testing of connection resulted in 100% success, but when trying to connect to the internet they received the dns 80410418 error. This was also my situation and it was because of the little space before the number 1 inside of the ip.

If you've already found the solution, then never mind about this. Good day to you sir. Thank you for your work on the site.

Ive been haveing a HUGE problem with connecting my PSP
It tells me Error 80410A0B when i try to scan for my wireless net.
Can ya' help at all?
I hope you can, email me quickly please!
Frankly I have a laptop, and a DS system that work without effort in the home off a 2wire, why will this thing not detect it?

Posted by: Mario at March 17, 2007 7:54 PM

Same problem as many others here, and seen elsewhere on the web.

Error 80410A0B when trying to scan or connect (even when I manually enter all the wireless settings I know work for our laptops). My network is configured to support 11B as well as G, but no dice.

I've read threads elsewhere that it has to do with the PSP's WLan power-save settings etc. Tried that, no success. Has *anybody* found a reliable workaround to the Error 80410A0B problem?

If so, please post it here (emailing danforth233 @ hotmail dot com would be nice too).

If there's no solution posted, why on earth haven't Sony documented it somewhere, seems common enough!

Please note that I have a lot of different PSP Internet troubleshooting articles on this site: go to the little search box just below the big red "Ask Dave a Question" button and type in "PSP Internet" to see what I mean.

As far as installing an IM client, Microsoft Office or even Windows on a PSP, I have never seen a legit, trustworthy demonstration of such capabilities and as far as I can tell, the PSP is most assuredly NOT a personal computer nor does it have the basic capabilities of a PC, so I can't imagine HOW you could install anything like that. And yet, people keep telling me they've seen WinXP running, so perhaps someone just needs to explain how this all works here so I can be enlightened? :-)

Hmmm... I think the PSP needs 802.11b enabled on the router you're trying to connect to. I couldn't connect at all when I had my Netgear DG834G set to 'g' only.

I get different problems though. Both the PS3 and PSP can be set up and connect no worries. Restart them and try half an hour later and you get 'access point not detected'. If you go to 'Scan' on either and keep retrying the router appears, then disappears, then appears... you get my drift.

Is it the router or the PS3/PSP? Mmmm... my sons computer connects to the same router wirelessly and doesn't have a problem. BTW the PS3 and PSP report signal strength between 90 and 100%.

Bizarre.

But when i test the connection it says: "A connection error has occured. The Key information exchange timed out".. And then i move closer to the connection point but it still says the same..

can you play computer games on the psp?

I was wondering..if I got a internet router like NETGEAR or something, would my PSP pick it up?

Posted by: ahdil at July 9, 2007 11:08 PM

Terrance: that means you don't have a wifi network in range so you can't connect to the Internet.

Jesse: uh, yeah. :-)

Ahdll: You can definitely use that, but make sure it's "b" protocol (that is, 802.11b, not 802.11g, the more modern protocol) so that the PSP can see it.

I was having the 80110404 error. My PSP was finding the network, and it was connecting. I just couldn't get on the internet. Tried auto and manual config. Had my wireless router configured properly. I noticed my router had a 3rd DNS entry. So I manually entered that third entry into my PSP as the first DNS server, and left the second one blank. Voila! I am now online. So, poke around in your router settings and look for a 3rd DNS entry. Good luck!

Hi Dave,

I did all you said to get online on my psp. But its giving me the same error message - 80410418 and not able to connect.
I have different access points and tried all but still no go. With some access points I do get the IP address, signal strength , etc. but it says at the end of the screen that internet connection failed.

Thanks.

Hey there, I hope im not getting on your nerves by asking this question, cause i have been reading most of the questions above and a lot of them are actually the same, and i saw your answer to one of them, but my situation just doesnt fit! I have a very reliable access point which i have used again and again, (Most recently yesterday afternoon) and today i attempted to get on the internet only for it to tell me that "A connection error has occurred, the attempt to obtain the IP adress timed out" I know that it is supported on the psp cause ive used it a lot, and there isnt another "encrypted password" like you were saying. Im so upset! I have no idea why its telling me this, is there anything i couldve done to make it say this????? PLEASE send an answer to Peace_hippie420@yahoo.com Thank you VERY MUCH!

We just bought our son a PSP for Christmas. For once, this is not a "how do I get connected" question. I work with computers, have set a DSL wireless modem in our house, have the security key written down, etc., and have hooked up a couple of laptops already, so that's not the issue.

But when we got cellphones last year, we had an issue with my son downloading ringtones, songs etc. plus texting and not realizing how much he was running up the bill. To his credit, he didn't make a lot of unauthorized calls, but there were times he didn't realize he was making purchases.

We are concerned that we may get into the same situation with the PSP, and the credit card companies tend not to support the view that he was a minor and not able to enter into a contract to make a purchase. Plus they have our credit card number from when we made the purchase of the PSP.

So what is the deal (without me having to spend a lot of time learning how to set up the PSP) on making sure that he can't rack up a bunch of unwanted charges for online game playing, movie and music purchases, etc.

Secondarily we'd like to exert some control over what he can do and see online, just like with a regular PC. So there is both the purchase restriction issue and content filtering that we are concerned about being able to set up. I don't want to disable Internet access, nor do I think we'd be successful in keeping his PSP "dumbed down" anyway.

So we need a quick tutorial from an unbiased third party such as yourself.

Thanks.

Hey,

My PSP keeps on saying 'A connection error has occurred. The attempt to obtain the IP address timed out'. I typed in a WEP key but I don't know what's going wrong. Could I have typed in the wrong WEP key?

Okay a thousand ppl must have asked the same question but no answer has appeared. I have a wireless router for my laptop and its unsecured, yet my psp still won't connect. that same connection error keeps popping up can youhelp please

Posted by: Sammy at January 10, 2008 10:04 PM

Sammy and all, the first thing I would check is that your wireless router is NOT a "g" only router. There are now three popular versions of the 802.11 protocol, 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n. Only the first can be seen and used by the Sony PSP. The others are incompatible. Unfortunately most of the wireless routers I see at the computer stores are now "g" only, so buyer beware.

Hello, I am trying to connect the PS3 to my home wireless, it keeps giving me - Failed to Obtain IP address.

I have enabled DMZ ip on my router page, I have also manually enabled Port Triggering Undee Gaming on my router, below is what I have given.

ports I inputted on my Wireless router are - 80, 443, 10070-1008- & 3479

Whether it is secured or unsecured, it just wont connect.
Does anyone know if there are specific Ports that need to be allowed for PS3 to connect to Internet?

thanks for the help

Posted by: KRAIGE at March 15, 2008 7:14 PM

I did everything you showed on the help page, I had alread figured it all out on my own, but tried it your way, and both ways don't work - It sees the internet, it just refuses to use it here's the message: A connection error has occured, A connection to the acess point couldn't be established, check the security settings for the network and try again.
I'm out of creativity when it comes to manipulating it to work for me, can you help?

P.S. It DOES see that there's internet there, it says its "65%" signal strength, it just won't connect, I've put inthe WEP adress and everything, it just hates me, or wants me to spontaneously combust...

Please note that a common problem with Internet connection errors is simply that you are using an 802.11g router / base unit, and your Sony PSP simply doesn't know 'g' protocol, just 'b'.

Hi i'm only 13 but i'm fully aware of most things in the technology category I was having trouble with accesing the internet over the PSP as my security was configured to WPA which for some reason wouldnt work on the PSP (although it seemed to work fine on PS3 and the Wii) well anyway the best advice I can give you is to re-configure your security settings to a 64 bit WEP as you get a much better signal and most importantly it worked.

Posted by: Nick at April 23, 2008 8:51 PM

For those of you, like Nick, who have inexplicable problems connecting your PSP to your wireless network, look closely at your wireless base unit: the PSP *CANNOT* understand 802.11g or 802.11n. It *ONLY* understands 802.11b at this point in time, so no matter how strong the signal, the PSP will see it, but won't be able to negotiate the protocol handshake and actually connect to the Internet. If that's your problem, the only solution is an older 802.11b compatible router/wireless unit.

Really? I don't have a problem with my Netgear WNDR3300. I can connect to the PS3 through the Private Network at home, and I can connect to the internet, and to the PS3 over the internet, through my router. However, I cannot connect to my PS3 over anyone elses internet. Chik-fil-A has free Wi-Fi, and the PSP can recognize the connection, but I cannot to my PS3. I gave my brother my old router, and I can connect to the internet at his house, but I cannot connect to my PS3. I keep getting the same error messages everyone else is getting, and I cannot find a resolution on this.

Any help? I don't agree with the connection problems you describe, because I can recognize G & N wireless networks.

Posted by: Nazme at May 22, 2008 7:25 AM

To add on to, what looks like a pointless outing to figure out what's wrong with my connecting, I'd also like to add....

In another thread on Sony's forums, someone suggested that if you connect away from home, and make it to the "error" message screen, that it means the PS3 has turned on.....you only then have to go back out and select "Private Network" to access it. However, I've tried this, while leaving the PS3 off, and then by turning on the PS3, and trying it that way.

It was a no-go on both occassions. I could connect at my brother-in-laws house to the internet, but I couldn't access my PS3 at all.

The best news.....everywhere I try to go to get answers, all started with 2007 inquiries, and NO ONE has yet to answer them.

When set up the password was random numbers of which no record was kept. When I scan our wireless network comes up but security is "Not Supported" it won't even let me select it & put in a password (ie: if i can get a new password). Can you please advise how I can change the secy setting.

I hope ya can help me.

Posted by: Stefan at December 25, 2008 8:04 PM

To CHERIE - Look on the bottom of your router and there should be instructions or maybe a website and password. Use those.

To Dylan - You can't go to YouTube "officially". Adobe AKA flash player is not available on PSP. BUT with custom firmware, you can install a program that lets you. If you don't know what that is look it up.

Dave, I've recently been having some problems with getting the internet of my PSP. What gives with those problem

Posted by: javier at December 29, 2008 1:51 PM

hey dave. ive got this netgear wireless router WG111v3. i try continuously to connect to it from my psp system version 4.05 . it keeps on saying
"a conncetion error has occured.
an access point was detected"
i hav 64%+ signal strength. pleeeeeeeeaaassse help me. also, can you get a wired connection.

Posted by: George at December 29, 2008 2:19 PM

I have connected my PS3 to my wireless network with no problems. I would now like to do the same for my PSP, then link them together. With the PSP, everything works out fine, it finds the network and everything goes ok until the test. This is when I get the error message 'A connection error occurred. Followed by either - The Key information exchange timed out or The connection to the access point timed out.' Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Brian.

dear dave

Hey Dave. This question I am asking you goes to the one "connect to the internet with my sony psp". Each time I try to connect to the internet, there's something that says "A connection error has occured. The access point was not detected".Help me please I am 11 years old

Posted by: Dishawn at February 28, 2009 7:24 PM

Generally "access point not detected" means that there's no wireless (wifi, 802.11) network within range of the PSP. Unfortunately we don't live in a world with pervasive Internet connectivity so you might have to try using your PSP at a cafe or the public library or somewhere else where there's wireless Internet. Good luck!

In terms of the WLAN switch, please see:

I've been trying for 3 weeks to connect my PSP to the internet. I've tried everything I've looked up and everything I have been told by tech support...I only got it to connect one time for about 10 seconds. Could it just be my PSP? I did win it out of an arcade game on $1.00 (throughout the weeks of playing the damn game I've probably spent about $50 which is still a great deal). Any advice would help, but any new advice would be fantastic. Thanks!

After i've been on the psp internet browser for a few minutes-it kicks me off saying a connection error has occured:80411082. When I try to reconnect it says a connection could not be established...check the security settings and try again. Usually after about the 5th try it will work but only for a few minutes and then I get kicked off again w/ the same error code.
Any help??

plus in your guide u could connect to a server that had wep security, u just set it to none later and it worked, I tried that w/ one server that had wpa-psk(tkip) security, and set it to none like u did but it just times out when trying to get the ip address. Does the 'none' security only work w/ wep security servers. (But then again, the wpa-psk(tkip) server im trying to get w/ no security is the one i keep getting the 80411082 error message w/)

Right now my software is at 5.03 an i cant download the newest software cuz i keep getting kicked off the server and my DLoad fails.

This is a relatively new problem, and i have been using that server fine for months, but this started in around march.

PLease help!

Posted by: brandon at November 23, 2009 10:02 AM

first thing you cannot connect to the internet without a router or a wifi sorry thats bad news good news is. u can get ur errors gone it should be your router security setting want you to go to www.whatismyip.com copy and past your ip on the top of the search bar as you get there login to ur router and then go to where ever ur router security maybe and then you should see alot of security on want you to desb them witch i mean to turn them all off and save your router settings. NOTE: the security setting is to keep people from connecting to your internet. but how ever it is a simple task i am telling you so save your router settings try to reconnect to ur internet on the psp once again if that dosent work add me on msn akaweed@live.com goodluck!

well dave i just got my psp for christmas and im having trouble hooking it up to the internet. I hit scan and then it shows my connection then i click it and it asks for a WPA key is this my router security key?

Posted by: Eric at December 25, 2009 8:38 AM

1. Error connecting, despite finding network on scan. My problem was wireless access point was set to G only. Resolved when re-allowed wireless B and G.
2. WPA2 security is not supported; WPA is.
Eric: yes, it's your router's wireless network security key, aka shared key. Any wireless device will need this key to connect, including for example a new notebook computer. Find the key by accessing your router's setup page using a web browser.

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
