Is it possible to change the color scheme and background on Yahoo Mail? In particular, I want to upload my own background photo…
Yahoo Mail recently released a substantial redesign that gave the popular Web-based email service a lot more customization options, which was much needed as prior it felt like, well, 2005 all over again! The new interface is more elegant and powerful, but even with this redesign, there are only limited customization options, certainly fewer than on Gmail or other Web-based email services.
Still, there are some things you can tweak and improve with Yahoo Mail to change the user experience, though I’m sorry to report that as of this writing you cannot upload your own custom background image. Maybe some day, or perhaps there’s a third party extension to your Web browser offering that capability, but within the Yahoo world it’s likely just sitting somewhere on a to-do list.
To start, here’s the stock “white on white” Yahoo Mail interface:
It’s, well, boring. No way around it.
To improve things, click on the gear icon on the top right.
You can mess with the various Settings, but for this task, click on Themes.
You’ll get a nice set of canned options from which you can choose:
I really like the photos that the Yahoo Mail team have chosen. When you see two colors like the lower left option of white and purple, that’s the background (the large swatch) and the highlight color (the smaller triangle).
Better yet, click on one of the images and it’ll temporarily show you how your inbox will appear:
Very nice. Let’s stick with that one!
Just click on Done if you’ve found your favorite and you’re good to go:
Notice that the colors of the various elements of my inbox have changed too so that they’re more visible.
A distinct improvement, I say!
Hi, I am a Yahoo mail user and I want to set my own background as I don’t like any of the default backgrounds in yahoo themes….. In this case what i have to do?…Please reply me as soon as possible…As it has a solution or not….?
If you’ve upgraded to the more modern version of Yahoo Mail [it’s automatic] then in Settings you should be able to find “Themes” and make all sorts of changes to make everything more aesthetically pleasing!
Re ATT / Yahoo Themes: I chose a theme and I DON’T LIKE IT!!!!! I only wanted to see what a theme (any theme) looked like. I had no idea that there was no way to GET RID OF IT!!! I don’t want to change to a different theme. I want to get rid of all themes and go back to NO THEME.
How did I do that?????
Thanks, Dave
hey nice and informative post.
Dear Dave,
dunno why, but my yahoo! mail accepts the photographic images only in the PCs which work with Windows 7.
My newer machines with Windows 10 OS won’t accept them – only the simple theme options are available.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Regards, Thomas
