What's a "pump and dump" OTCBB stock?

I received an email from some company promoting a publicly traded stock that's valued at $0.17/share. How can stocks be that low and is there any chance it's a legit offer? Or is this stuff all a big hustle?

What's the most popular Halloween candy?

It's Halloween, All Hallow's Eve, and in the United States, at least, that means it's time for a strange custom that children throughout the country look forward to with great delight: Trick or Treat. For no obvious good reason, kids dress up in costumes either whimsical or scary -- depending on their age -- and canvass the neighborhood, knocking on doors and seeking the best and tastiest candy, sweets and treats.

Actually, the origin of trick or treating is quite fascinating and probably comes from English celebrations of Guy Fawkes Day in the 1900s and earlier. By the 1920s, pranks and mischief became the more common outcome of Halloween, and the Great Depression made it worse: people couldn't afford to give candy to children so the trouble just increased. It wasn't until after WWII (and the end of sugar rationing) that the modern form of trick or treat candy quests began. Nowadays, it's big business, with over $6 billion expected to be spent on candy, costumes and decorations this year.

Review: Sony NEX-5N Digital Camera

This is a guest post by professional photographer Paul M. Bowers...

I was born and raised in the briar patch of commercial photography- view cameras and large-format transparency film. Cameras without electronics- not even a meter- and big accordion bellows.

I should have purchased stock in the Polaroid Corporation before I began.

Over the next 30 years, I watched camera technology change- internal metering systems, autoexposure, autofocus, super-fast and super sharp lenses, amazing shutter speeds. Film died and digital post-production became a standard.

Despite this provenance, I've always been enamored with the simplicity of small cameras. Point-and-shoot, "Press Here Dummy", snapshot cameras, compact- whatever you'd like to call them. My favorite was the little Olympus XA. Once digital, I started with the Coolpix 950 and on to the Canon G series, which I've been shooting ever since. I still shoot commercially and use the Canon EOS system, but when I'm not getting paid, I still prefer the small form factor cameras.

How do other countries celebrate Independence Day?

Hello Mr. Taylor. The other kids in my class say that every country celebrates Independence Day on July 4th and that it's a global holiday, but I don't think that's right. Does every country really celebrate July 4th or are they just wrong?

What is a ponzi scheme?

Dave, a friend of mine listened politely to my explanation of how a multi-tiered marketing system I've signed up for works, then told me rather bluntly that it was a ponzi scheme and that I was being ripped off. I didn't really understand, though it was clearly some sort of scam or another. What is a ponzi scheme?

Does the Unilever logo have a hidden message?

Not that I'm paranoid or anything, but I'm very suspicious of the logo of huge food conglomerate Unilever and the more I look at their tiny logo, the more I can see occult symbols in it. First it was Proctor & Gamble with its 13 stars and creepy man in the moon, now it's Unilever? Debunk this, Dave, tell me I'm wrong. Or are you part of that company too?

I have and really like the GPS navigational system on my Toyota Highlander but am a bit baffled about something: it seems that my cellphone can't auto-pair with the bluetooth system in the car because it's no longer the #1 phone on the list, my wife's phone is in that slot somehow. Not good. How can I delete her cellphone so mine is #1 and the bluetooth system pairs automatically?

Verbal Contracts and Timely Payments

A while back I wrote a short piece about whether oral or verbal contracts are legally enforceable and have since been garnering lots of interesting comments and stories. Here's one that came in this week that should be a good warning for people who don't write things down on paper when they complete financial transactions...

My ex-landlord's wife sold me a car. We had an oral agreement that I would pay $1400 for it. She signed the title over to me when I put $400 down on it. I in return sold the car to someone else, I have since still been paying on that last $1000, I have it down to $435. I'm a single mom who makes only $9.00 and hour and I get paid twice a month. I pay when I have extra money. He calls me constantly harassing me for a payment and now is threatening to take me to court..Will this stand? I know I owe him $435 and am paying it a little at a time. We had an oral agreement and no time limit, Also my ex-husband said he would help me pay for it and he has not. What can I do?

What skills do I need to be a successful system administrator?

As part of reinventing myself professionally, I want to be a system administrator with networking knowledge. I thought that was the typical thing to do, most likely something windows related with their boatloads of certifications not including experience needed to get into the work field.

I talked to someone that has been in the role of system administrator, however, and he actually pointed me in a different direction: He dissed Windows...

If I really wanted to learn something that's been around for decades with little changes, and in great demand then he said I should learn the foundation of UNIX, as everyone in the world needs a UNIX Admin. The market's saturated with sys admin in windows/help desk/supports etc. and if you wanted to work in another country, I'd have no issues with language, computer wise. And that I can work in any type of industry as UNIX is the main backbone for 90% of commercial organizations.

What do you think, Dave? What's the core skillset and training needed to be a successful system administrator in the next decade?

What HDTV TV should I buy?

I'm moving into a new apartment on Friday (first time living by myself!) and I don't own a TV. However, I love movies so I'm going to buy one this weekend. You easily know more about this kind of thing than any other friend of mine, so I was wondering if you had any pointers? Things to look for - LED vs plasma, etc?

Basically, I just want to watch movies on it. I'm not a big videophile (or audiophile for that matter). I'll probably get a 40" with a Blu-Ray player and call it a day. But I don't want to make the wrong choice, so I figured I'd ask Dave. Thanks for any advice. Most people are steering me toward a Vizio at CostCo because they're pretty cheap. I just want to watch something like Wall-E and have it look incredible.

Blu-Ray playback problems with Silver Surfer?

What's going on? I have a fancy new LG BH100 Blu-Ray high-def video player and when I finally got my hands on Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer I was aghast to find that it just didn't work at all. All the other Blu-Ray DVDs I have work fine, but that one is rejected by the player and I never even see the top menu. What the heck is wrong?

What's the best telephone calling card deal?

One of my kids is going to be studying abroad in Europe this upcoming semester, and so in anticipation of this, I started researching the best ways to make calls to Europe from the US. Can I motivate my kids to excel by paying them?

"rewards for doing good"- grades/college (and high school). I know there are pros and cons on this, however at this point I am committed and am going to move ahead with a program. I think you can help me make it better based on the seasoned experience of other people who have done this and the changes they would make.

I have used this process for grades-elementary school, for reading, and for learning classmates names with my children when they were younger and it provided great benefits to them. Now I want to apply it with grades for a Junior in High school and sophomore in college (note: they are already excellent, I just want to FURTHER encourage that.

Similarly, again I am committed. My oldest has for some time had an interest in "investing". I've told him I'd give him some money to "learn with" (probably in the stock market). I've been thinking start small, like $1,000 or $2,000. What are some smart rules that would both motivate and serve him (and our family)?

Should students use Google for research?

Dave, I'm very concerned about the "search engine" approach to doing research. I think it's useless as training for doing real research, encourages children to acquire just the superficial facts, skimming along the surface of information rather than learning the real story on any given topic.

The first use of computers for research should be learning how to find books at the library. Second, students should learn how to use physical encyclopedias and online encyclopedias. Third, students should be introduced to online periodical indexes. The use of search engines should be the last "skill" to be introduced and should be combined with a discussion of the commercial underpinnings of the system and the various ways that results are manipulated.

You seem to be pretty deep in the world of search engines and online research. Do you agree with what I'm saying?
