Can't pair bluetooth headset with Motorola RAZR phone?

I dunno, maybe I just make things difficult for myself, but I just bought a Motorola HS820 handsfree bluetooth headset to use with my new Motorola RAZR cellphone, and I can't get the silly thing to work with my phone! I follow the directions, but the headset is never seen by the RAZR?

Dave's Answer:

Perhaps the most important step in this entire process is to charge up the headset before you start. When I bonded mine to my RAZR, I gave it about three hours for a full charge, then also made sure my phone was fully charged too, though I'm sure that doesn't matter.

Once you're ready, you need to get the headset into "pairing mode" which is done by pushing and holding down the call button for about ten seconds. The blue light will turn on and stay on (if it's just flashing you haven't gotten the headset into pairing mode. Try again)

Now, on the phone, you need to go to Menu --> Settings --> Connections --> Bluetooth. At this point on the phone, one of the options is "Handsfree". Select it and you'll see:

Motorola RAZR V3c: Look for Bluetooth Devices

Choose "Look for Devices" at this point and you'll now see the phone scan for individual devices:

Motorola RAZR V3c: Scanning for Bluetooth Devices

Hopefully, it'll find your headset:

Motorola RAZR V3c: Bluetooth Device Scan Results

The Motorola HS820 handsfree bluetooth headset is what I'm working with, and I think what you're talking about too (though it doesn't really matter because all headsets bond with phones using a similar approach, and all Motorola phones have the same settings and configuration menus too).

To proceed, I select the headset because now I have to actually pair the two together. Having selected the HS820, I now am shown:

Motorola RAZR V3c: Bond with Bluetooth Device HS820?

I want to do this, so I indicate "Yes" and am then asked to enter a passkey. Here's where you can see that bluetooth security isn't as good as it could be: the passkey for all headsets is 0000. Enter that code, choose "Ok", and it should match what the headset seeks:

Motorola RAZR V3c: Bluetooth PIN Saved

That's all there is to it. If your phone isn't seeing the headset during the scan process, or it's rejecting the PIN, I think you might have a bad device and I would suggest you take it back.

Good luck to you!

Great article, there was just one tiny piece missing about pairing mode that I found on the Motorola's site...for the headset, the boom is closed when you push it until the light is solid, then you have to quick open the boom to keep it solid...otherwise the light goes out. It was frustrating!

Otherwise, these directions were awesome, thanks!

Posted by: Deb at November 15, 2006 5:59 AM

Thanks for the concise help, and that added note about the boom really helps a guy who lost his headset's manual- thanks even more!

Thank you!!! This page was very helpful. I was frustrated all morning, didn't know how to put the handsfree device in pairing mode. Again, thank you.

The Google gods spun me your way after mucho frustrado trying to get this crazy little gadget to pair with my Razr. Great tutorial...thank you! Who knows how many frustrated customers return a headset because it wouldn't pair to a Razr, even though they had held down the button 'til it was flashing blue...its all about that extra few seconds of button hold time!
Kudos!

On the V3 once it finds the device you have to select it and then it will ask to bond with it.

Thanks, this was very helpful. I forgot how to pair my bluetooth.

Posted by: Chris at March 24, 2007 8:37 PM

Thanks. I followed your advice and it worked. I 've been trying to pair it with my Motorola Razr and it finally worked because I found out that the blue light had to be on instead of flashing.

Thank you for your fantastic site and advice!! I echo the sentiment of those who've come before...I had nary a clue of how to pair up my phone and headset, and now, thanks to you, I'm a lawbreaker no longer!!

Great article. I have lost my user manual for the bluetooth headset and was unable to figure out paring mode. HOwever, now that I have that figured out, my phone is asking for a passcode before the pairing will be complete. Is this passcode headset specific, or is there a generic one I can use. Very frustrating!!

Posted by: chad at May 22, 2007 11:49 AM

Generally, the passcode will be 0000 or 00000 so try those.

Posted by: Dave Taylor at May 22, 2007 1:16 PM

ten seconds hold of the call button is all that matters. i was frustrated as well 'cuz i couldn't get to pair my razr with my H3 bluetooth till i read this info posted in here. thanks to you Dave.

Great piece of information. I have purchased HS820 some 10 days ago, but unable to pair with my Motorola V3x and almost throw it. Now, I followed your instruction and it worked at very first time. The information provided in manual is not sufficient and not accurate. Thank you very much as you saved my bucks!

Posted by: Kiran. London at May 28, 2007 2:10 PM

Dave, You are awesome! I haven't been able to use my HS820 headset with my Motorola SLVR phone since I purchased the phone almost two years ago. I had been using it with a V550 phone flawlessly prior to that. Your advice and instructions are rock solid! And if you're looking to pair this bluetooth headset with a Motorola SLVR, not a Razr V3 this is the place! My hat's off to you for tirelessly taking the time to put this helpful info out there for us all! THANK YOU!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

Thanks Dave I have finally paired my bluetooth head set with my motorola RAZR V3 detailed instructions were excellent

Posted by: JOHN HILL at November 17, 2007 7:44 PM

I have successfully paired my devices. However, in order to make it work I must turn on the "tools" and select "handsfree" and "temporarily power on". Am I required to do this each time? Is there a way to have the link turned on permanently?

Help?

I have a Razr v3, and on the first nite I got the headphone (motorola), it worked. Now that I am trying it again, there's NO Handsfree Option. Just Bluetooth Link. What do I do?

I have a motorola Razr and so does my son but he can't download songs from his to mine using bluetooth. He tries but it can not find mine. I talked to alltel where we bought the phones and he said that they have to be linked together then can pair. Not sure what that means. Can you give me instruction on what to do?
