Can't install Sun Star Office on Windows XP?

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 installed. In the past I used Sun Star Office and got an invite to test the Star Office 7 Beta. I was able to download the program with no problem but when I try to install I am presented with the following error:

NSIS Error
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
The could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus. You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy. It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED)

I contacted Sun and followed the suggestions that they made with no resolution. I have installed a couple of programs since trying Star Office with no problems. I have run the virus checker, spyware checker, defrag and disk clean up to no avail. Can you suggest anything from your experiences. Thanks for any thing you can provide. Tom

Dave's Answer:

Here's what I could dig up about this problem:

It's not a Sun specific issue, it's related to the installer that is being used and the installer is used for hundreds of programs, not just Sun ones. (The installer is from NullSoft, in case you are interested).

It almost certainly means that the file hasn't downloaded correctly; I've had them myself, downloaded them again, and everything has worked fine.

There are numerous recommendations from the the companies that provide this software to suggest possible remedies (the usual, as mentioned in the message, along with ensuring plenty of disk space and others).

If you can download from an alternative source that might provide better quality bytes, and you might have better luck working with Firefox/Mozilla rather than IE and using FTP rather than HTTP, but there are no guarantees.

My thanks to Martin C. Brown for his help with this question

Re: NSIS problem. I get same error message but I don't know what is trying to install what. I thought it was some kind of hookey stuff that something was trying to download for me. AVG shows no trojans, no dodgy diallers have appeared so I can only think it's one of MS's updates. Does Billy use NullSoft installed stuff? I don't have much software other than MS and Adobe.

How do I find out what it's trying to download?

If it's a part-download somewhere I could delete it and start from scratch again, or if it's a corrupt file in the OS somewhere, can I get a new one from somewhere ? (MS?)

I usually manage to sort these things out but this one's got me.

Nice site. Only just found it. Very useful
