Can't get standalone music player to work on MySpace?

I have an iMac G4 which runs on OS X 10.2.8. I believe this means that I can't download Standalone Music player (which is used on mySpace.com) because you need 10.3.9? Can I download some sort of software to upgrade without paying a fortune?! or does it mean I can never listen to band's music on mySpace?

I'm pretty confused by your question, because the music player available on MySpace is actually built atop the Flash technology and it shouldn't require any special software or version of your operating system.

Well, that's not entirely true. You might need to make sure that you have the very latest version of the Flash player for your Mac installed, which you can do by going here:

Macromedia Flash Download Center

But since it's all written in Flash, it means that you can theoretically also pull a player off MySpace and drop it on another page too, which is a pretty cool trick!

I'll show you. I'm going to pop over to MySpace and search for "Jazz" by going to the Music section and specifying Genre = "Jazz". I get 1922 matches, but more importantly, I also get the ability to fine-tune my search:

Once I specify that I want only jazz bands in Colorado I get quite a few less matches (and am again reminded just how painfully slow searches can be in MySpace), but it turns out that I want to use the LA jazz band Saturn Jazz for this demonstration.

The trick is that I need to view the source of their page and copy and paste a huge block of code into my own page starting with <script> and ending with </OBJECT>. Once I've done that, I can now have their player here on this page (it's just a Flash object, after all), and invite you to listen to their music:

Click on the "Play" button and see if it works for you, then go and check out Saturn Jazz for yourself.

Ah yes, the old "MySpace Standalone Player is darn annoying, how can I change it" question series. :-) Yes, I agree that their default player is very limited in its capabilities.

There is, in fact, no way you can have more than one song in it if you're just a regular profile, and if you're a band, there's no way to have more than four songs. There are, however, other options for Flash-based audio players that you can explore. Start by doing a Google search for "mp3 player flash myspace" and you'll be surprised by the results! :-)

Oh, and stay tuned to this blog. Soon enough I'll have a simple and elegant alternative too.

I really hope eventually everyone can have more than 4 -- most likely once myspace adds their 'pay for downloads' feature they're working on.

Coming from an artists perspective myself, I believe everyone asking for more than 4 tracks are not simply wondering how they can have more than 4 songs on their page... but wondering how it can SPECIFICALLY be in the stand alone player allowing others to add more than 4 songs.

OK, I'm going crazy. My daughter had me set up a Myspace and it's pretty cool, however I cannot get music to play for longer than a couple seconds on my standalone player. It will load, connect, buffer, and play for about three seconds, stop, and buffer again, and play for a few seconds, etc., all the way through the song. I emailed Myspace and about a month later got a reply that they're "working on it." But nobody else seems to have a problem and when I am at someone else's house and go on my site it plays the music all the way through. I have the latest version of Adobe Flash downloaded. Joseph, as far as I can tell, if you want to use the standard MySpace Standalone Player, then you need to have a musician's account. That's the simple answer. If you want to have *one song* you can just pick one from elsewhere in MySpace and set it as your profile song. I explain how to do that elsewhere on this site...
