I might be old school, but I still use Yahoo Mail and really like the new interface with all its colorful theme options. Fun, easy, but frustrating: I can’t seem to create new mail folders in Yahoo Mail. What am I doing wrong?
You’re not the first person to report that you’re having problems with the task of creating a new folder in Yahoo Mail. In fact, complaints go back over two years for people who are using the “new” interface (of course at this point it’s not really new) and finding that the new folder button doesn’t do anything. Heck, I bumped into this problem myself writing up this tutorial.
The problem appears to be one of layers in the fancy HTML that Yahoo is using for its new Yahoo Mail interface, which means that it’s kinda hard for you as a user to fix. There are actually three different ways to create a new folder, however, so let’s step through the options before you get too frustrated.
The first and most obvious is the secret button that’s on the left menu:
Can’t see the “new folder” option? I did say it’s secret, right? 🙂
Move your cursor over “Folders” and it shows up:
There it is!
Click on it to create a new folder:
If you don’t see that window pop up in the middle of your screen, what I found worked was to click on “Folders” to have it hide all the subfolders. Then I could click and create a new folder easily enough.
Still not working? Find a message, any message, then click on “Move” along the top:
The last choice is “New Folder”. Choose that.
Or, if you’re really feeling bold, try the key sequence suggested: “D” then “Control+Shift+E”. I couldn’t get the latter to work at all on my Win 8.1 system running Chrome but perhaps you’ll have better luck.
And if none of those options work, well, there’s always Gmail.
WOW ALL THESE YEARS LATER IT STILL WORKS!!!!!
Hope this helps on that same pop small window where it says cancel there is a tiny dot right above it the word cancel you have to kind of soft touch right on that (.) Small dot then the keyboard will show up
Hi Dave, after I update my Samsung phone software to version 9, I can’t create any more new folder , it say “ Do not use / \ or % in folder name.Max. 14 characters.” It lite up cancel in red and fading OK. I can’t do anything except for cancel.
Please help.

Have you solved your problem because I’m having the same issue
If you have Windows 8.1 the Yahoo rename folder issue requires that you rename the folder and then close out the browser. You will see the correct folder name appear when you open the browser
Hello Dave,
The issue that I have is that I would like to move a folder to another folder. When right clicking on that specific folder, the “move folder” option does not show.
Why? because I created a folder called “old mail” where I place my old classes. That way, the list of folders is smaller when I am trying to move mail to a specific folder. All old folders then will be in the “Old mail” folder (one line instead of 100). If I need something from the old mail, then I can see the 100 folders.
Thank you for your informative article. Option one worked fine for me.
Ditto on all the critiques of the IT folks at yahoo.com … They need to keep their jobs and come up with new and sometimes stuff that lacks common sense.
Kind regards,
Paul
Thank you sir for your help. Both Yahoo & Google can’t seem to leave well enough alone and make it harder & harder to navigate and FORGET about emailing them for help.NEVER a response.I’m
seriously thinking about dropping them.I’ve had Yahoo twice change my mailbox to the new one (which everybody seems to hates) WITHOUT my permission & when I told them to put it back the
‘way it was, they half assed it & lost (I do not know how) a folder that contained personal things that my deceased brother had sent me.Talk about wanting to do violent harm to some one! I told them about it and didn’t even get a reply,Sorry sons of bitches.
When I upgraded to an Ipad2 air,the folder option no longer appeared in yahoo. The folders previously created are there..and I only have 10, but I can’t see how to create a new folder as the term folder no longer shows up. Please help. Thank you.
There is no ‘edit’, there is no ‘folder’, nor ‘new folder’, nor ‘move’, nor does the E control shift E work on my MacBook Pro. Why, why, why would they do this to users?
This was most helpful as on the verge of needing medical attention since the “new improved Yahoo Mail” was launched, with no spell checker, hidden buttons and about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Now it is barely usable for sending even a simple email without a fist fight.
I suspect this is all about streaming constant pop up adverts and do away with anything remotely useful.
But, this “secret button” nonsense is the last straw, tip #3 worked btw, the only way to get to OK button to appear to save the new folder is to use the “hidden button”, are YAHOO taking the feking p*ss?
This is the last straw and set’s a new low in the IT industry for total contempt for its users, I am now so disgusted with Yahoo inflicting this on the human race I will no longer use them and changing forthwith to GMAIL.
Tip #4 at the bottom is correct!
Thanks, John
I also can no longer create new file folders all of a sudden. I tried deleting no longer needed folders but that didn’t work. I don’t have that many file folders but I just get an error msg every time I try to create a new one. I am using an iPad 2 air. Anything else I can try before I go thru the painful experience if contacting Apple – never mind the copious amounts of time you will waste trying to make Apple understand what you’re telling them. Anyone who has resorted to Apple support can verify the frustration you will experience relating your problem multiple times while you go rocketing around their phone system before making you spend an hour cleaning up stuff you didn’t know was a problem with something totally unrelated to stated problem. They MAY help fix whatever it is but guaranteed it WILL be painful
All my folders were created on my desktop. There is no “folder” listing in my Yahoo email on my iPad. Is there some other way for me to create a folder? Thanks Dave
Nothing seems to be allowing me to a new folder. Even tried deleting old folders I didn’t really need.
Any other suggestions? Thank you so much for helping us out.
I can’t get it to work using these methods – at least the first two. I didn’t try the third.
The boxes if yahoo mail doesnt open fully to see the edit button. How can i make the boxes larger. I tried using the cursor to put a little arrow to enlarge it. But it didn’t work/
Dave, I have over hundreds of folders in Yahoo email & now I am no able to make a new one.
There must be a reason…. is it because I stopped all pop ups? And if so, how do I allow only
Yahoo mail pop ups? I ask bec I read from another response when googling that this was the
problem… appreciate help. Thanks
Is it possible you’ve hit some sort of internal folder limit? Try deleting one of your folders and trying to make a new one? (Note: don’t delete a folder with messages in it, of course, as that’ll likely delete those messages too)
YOU ROCK! The last option worked for me! Thanx!!!!!
I can’t find an answer to this anywhere… hope you can help. I truly hate the LONG list of folders and I’d like to put MANY folders into one. For instance, I want to create “ALL 2015 EMAILS” and put every email I got in 2015 there.
Is it possible to transfer entire files into one? I tried every way I could think of, but it just lists them UNDERNEATH the “ALL 2015 EMAILS” folder instead of INSIDE IT… so the list will only get longer and remain visible rather than INSIDE the new folder.
You can create subfolders in Yahoo now!
Hello Dave,
I need to know how many folders can we create in Yahoo mail. I am using Yahoo for work and home and I have probably about 100 folders and sub-folders. I cannot create more folders. Is there any limit to it?
Kindly reply
Regards,
Mohsin
