Can I change the return address of my MSN Hotmail mail?

Dave, I see that you are an expert on Microsoft's MSN Hotmail service. Can you tell me whether there's any way I can configure my Hotmail account so that when I send mail from that account, it has a different 'reply to' address? That'd be super helpful and keep me with Hotmail!

Dave's Answer:

I'm an expert now, eh? Ah, I guess so, even though I still prefer the simple and elegant Gmail interface over MSN Hotmail.

There is indeed a way that you can configure your Hotmail account so that messages sent out have a different return address, rather than your Hotmail address. Be warned, however, that this won't completely mask your use of Hotmail: anyone reasonably savvy will be able to view the mail headers and recognize that it was sent from a Hotmail account because it'll still have your Hotmail address as the "from".

So let's solve your problem!

To set a different return address, click on the "Options" link in the top right of the MSN Hotmail window once you're logged into your account.

There are a bunch of different choices, but the one you want to use is Message Replies. The result will be the following display:

The third section shows what you want: simply click on the radio button next to "identify the address below as the reply-to address" and enter your desired return address in the box.

Click "OK" and you're good to go!

Dave- I have tried to find out from MSN and have not been able so let's see if you know the answer. After getting cable service at work and home I did not want to change my email address since it was on my business publications. I asked if I could pay less just to keep the address. I was never able to get an answer that sounded like 'yes.' now the card i was paying with has been canceled but so far i can still get to the address since it is part of hotmail- or because they are giving me a grace period. do you know if i might get away with keeping the msn email address if msn is no longer my IP provider? I have a similar question to Chris- I have had my msn email account for some time and have it on all my business documents. I decided to move from Verizon DSL to Comcast Cable because of the lack of adequate coverage to my home location. Verizon said that I can keep my msn account for 60 days. If u get same problem that ( u use wrong e mail or password ) that mean the problem not in your PC , It's from msn site for sure .

Here's a problem you may or may not be familiar with, but which I'm quite sure constitutes a major flaw (unless I'm missing something):

I set up my Hotmail account years ago, in London. I'm now living in SE Asia and, while I can use my email account perfectly well, Windows Messenger seems to presume that I'd prefer to interface in the regional language.

Particularly, when attempting to edit my Hotmail account details I am taken to a settings page in Chinese (which I cannot read). No matter how I try, I cannot find a way to select English.

I will start by logging in to my account, select "Options" and then "View and edit your personal information" which takes me to the Chinese language page.

The first problem, with Windows Messenger (or Windows Live, to be specific) can be remedied, but there seems no way on earth to alter one's account information in a language other than that of the local region. Is this an oversight by Hotmail?

Any advice or insight you may have would be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine cannot enter their hotmail. It says that they have tried to enter too many times. When they click on the option to recover the e-mail addy it says that it has sent the information to the same address.

???? how can we fix this, and why would they even offer the option for password recovery on an e.mail account with a lost password.

Recently I set up Netzero Highspeed at my home location. I have had my hotmail account for several years, however I am unable to access hotmail from home. I can access hotmail at work were a broadband connection is available yet when I try from my home location it appears that I am unable even to get to the login section at msn. Is there some setting on IE that I need to change. I am not getting angry just confused?
