How do I add a YouTube video to my Web page or blog?

I keep finding these great videos on YouTube and want to include some of them in my Typepad blog but I have no idea how to do that. I tried dragging and dropping while I was composing an entry, but was totally unsurprised when it didn't work either. Can it be done?

Dave's Answer:

Ah yes, the astonishingly popular site YouTube. Turns out that it's pretty darn easy to find a video on YouTube and then include it in your blog entry or on your Web page.

I dug around and found an interesting little video showing the globe sculpture on the grounds of the Vatican Museum. Here's a link: Globe at Vatican Museum.

When you go there to check it out, notice the navigational elements on the right side of the video clip itself, in the "About This Video" box. It looks like this:

YouTube: About This Video

You can see the box you need, it's labeled "Embed" and the code, if you were to unwrap it all, would look like this:

<object width="425" height="350">
  <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HvHOCqbA6rE">
  </param>
  <param name="wmode" value="transparent">
  </param>
  <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HvHOCqbA6rE"
  type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent"
  width="425" height="350">
  </embed>
</object>

When I actually copy and paste it here, you'll see, the video just shows up:

Cool, eh? That'll answer your question and also point out how many people are doing video blogging (aka "vlogging").

Dave,
I try doing that with my moveable type blog, and it still doesn't work. It is very frustrating. Is it me?

Hello,

I am also trying to include my Youtube Videos to my webpages which I am doing. Just the different thing is that I wish to upload videos from my website to the YouTube server
and have those videos played back from my web site. It needs to be done seamlessly
without again having to register(I am already registered on YT) on YouTube or have the uploaded videos shown on or accesible
by the public on YouTube. I just wish to use the YouTube technology and server so I
don't have to reinvent the capability to adjust videos for size, length and resolution to
keep memory down.

Just wonder if this could possible. Could anybody help me with any idea /solution. Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Mukund

I would like to add video to my websites and blog but when I add the embedded info as per your instructions above via cut n paste ... nothing happens. In Dreamweaver do I have to add the embed code via Add > HTML > Script ? Or, is there some other way I am missing. I am a novice. Thank you for your additional instructions. Deidre

Hey, thanks man... It's just now when I embed the vid into my page, the video wont play.

It appears, but when I play it, it goes right to replay as if the video was over, yet it never even started. :-\

Dear Dave

Am trying to psot a You Tube video on my TypePad blog. Did what you say above, copied coding in 'embeded' and pasted in my post, but it only shows the coding and not the video. Will the video come up when I've completed and saved the post, or should it show already before saving?

Thanks for a fast, precise and real-world set of instructions to run youtube videos on my website.
Took a minute or less.

QUESTION: when the youtube video ends, how do I remove the image from the web page?
