Add Photos to your Google Plus account?

I know how to add people to Circles in Google Plus and I, of course, know how to add status updates, but I haven't figured out how to easily add a bunch of photos from my computer as a "gallery" to share with my G+ friends. Help?

Dave's Answer:

With its zeal to do something different from those UI designers over at Facebook, the Google Plus team has given us a very different way to look at sharing media with our friends, colleagues and circles. Problem is, sometimes it's not obvious how to do things, especially if you've spent time learning Facebook.

Fortunately, uploading photographs en masse to your Google Plus account is fairly straightforward once you click on the right button or two. You just have to keep your eyes open for the requisite buttons on different pages.

To start out, make sure you're logged into your G+ account, then click on the tiny "picture" icon on the top of the page:

google plus upload photo 1

As you can see, it's not immediately obvious that's how you get to the Photos area, which is necessary if you want to upload more than one pic and add an album / gallery as part of the process. If you're just working with a single picture, click on the same button, but immediately below the status input box and you'll be able to upload directly.

Let's stick with the multiple pictures issue, however. When you click on the photo icon, it'll show you what albums you have already uploaded and, on the top right, there's a button that's going to bring us to the desired upload spot:

google plus upload photo 2

At this point, your Web browser becomes a huge empty box that's actually a drop target for image files you drag and drop onto it:

google plus upload photo 3

That's an easy way to upload, for sure!

I'll drag an image onto that box, so you can see what happens:

google plus upload photo 4

As soon as I "drop" the image icon onto the space, it starts uploading...

google plus upload photo 5

Once it's uploaded (or they've uploaded if you're working with more than one image) you'll be able to add it/them to an existing album or create a new album by typing in its name:

google plus upload photo 6

Once I click on "Create album" it's created and the picture or pictures are within. In this case, I only have the one photo, but it'd look the same if you had five, fifty or 300. Now you can share the upload with people in your Circle or Circles:

google plus upload photo 7

I'll add a message associated with the image by typing where the cursor is sitting atop the image. Notice that I've named my album "Interesting Photos" so I can use it again next time I bump into something worth sharing...

google plus upload photo 8

It all looks good and the comment is sure to engage the people who follow me on G+, so I click on "Share" and it appears thusly in everyone's Stream:

google plus upload photo 9

Nice and rather easy to do once you know the first step or two. Hope that helps you enjoy Google Plus!

Thank you for a great article. It was just what I was looking for. However, I use Windows 7 / IE 9 and when I try and drag multiple files to the "drop space" all it does is open one picture.

In your screenshot(Image file), it shows me two options drag or choose from computer. On my computer, I only get the choose from computer option.

As per your instructions, I did click on the top photo icon and not the slightly lower camera icon.

Looks great in theory. But when I drag and drop my photos it switches the URL from google+ to the filename of the photo on my local harddrive.

Antonius, that's okay behavior: you still need to click the "upload" button for that local image to be sent to the server. Or, if I am misunderstanding, note that the blue "Select photos from your computer" button leads to a different method of sending pics from your computer to G+. Try that?

Yeah, I click the red "UPLOAD NEW PHOTOS" button, and have also tried adding new photos to an existing album, but as soon as I drop the photo my web browser goes into file browser mode, if that makes sense? It shows the one photo (even if I selected multiple photos) in the browser window, and the URL points to the original location that I want to upload from. This is what happens in IE7 on windows vista, and in Opera 11 in linux. I read somewhere only Chrome users can upload more than one photo at a time?

This feature doesn't work in IE but works very nicely, as Dave described, in chrome or firefox. To manage photos in IE you would have to upload them through picasa (which actually isn't a bad way to do it).

Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you, Dave, for all your helpful information by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
