How do I add a Google Gmail sender to my contact list address book?

This is such a simple question I can't believe I'm asking it! Being a huge gmail fan since switching from hotmail I can't find out how to save the sender's address to my contcats list other than copying and pasting the address having gone to contaxts and create a new contact. Surely the good people at google have a one click solution for me that I just can't find! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dave's Answer:

Your confusion is understandable, because like so many features in Google's splendid Gmail service, what you seek is hidden under the innocuously labeled More options link.

To accomplish what you seek, simply open up a message from the sender who is to be memorialized in your address book. The head of the message will look like this message from my friend Scott Allen:

Gmail: More Options

Click on "More options", though, and suddenly there's a world of choices:

Gmail: Add Sender to Contact List

You can see the option you want: Add sender to contacts list. Assuming everything works properly -- and it should -- you'll now see a status message above the email:

Gmail: Added Sender to Contacts List

That's all there is to it. Hope that helps you figure the "one click" solution!

Hi there:
It looks like the "more options" choice has disappeared? If there's a way to "unhide options" I don't see it. Thanks

I just wanted to know how to put email in address book from a person that did not send and email also how to delete someone from address book

Posted by: John at January 29, 2008 7:16 PM

There is no "more option" choice on Gmail!! or I can not find it!!

Posted by: dick willson at May 9, 2008 8:41 AM

I cannot see "more option" link either. Tried both "older" and "newer" versions. Anyone knows how to bring it back or have it displayed? thanks

Posted by: gregoz at June 17, 2008 1:00 PM

I cant find it and I dont have a date in that location like the sample does, only a time of day

Posted by: paula huffines at June 18, 2008 4:17 PM

I found it next to the reply button, top right

Posted by: paula huffines at June 18, 2008 4:22 PM

I had this problem and like the rest of you could not find the more options link anymore. I had to click on the older version link at the top right of the page. The older version looks very much like the newer version, but there is a difference in the reply options. Click on the arrow next to reply and then you'll find the option to add this person to your contacts list. HOpefully this helps someone.

I switched to gmail about 4 months ago... and I'm sorry I did. I like the new yahoo mail much better. This is just me, so don't get upset! there is no right or wrong answer, but I too could not find how to simply add a sender to my contact list. Finally, I had to switch to the older version in order to do it... poor design by google. Yahoo is so easy. Also, the way messages roll up has its definite pros and cons... if you have a single subject line to multiple people, it can make it very difficult to track messages from individuals... so overall I don't like it... hard to read at times too... other than that, many good things, mostly google docs is the reason I went with gmail... thanks for this site! It helped me figure out how to add a contact!

Posted by: brent lam at February 27, 2009 9:20 AM

where is the "more option"

Posted by: GOPINATH at June 14, 2009 4:18 AM

There is no "more options" in Gmail anymore. It has been replaced by a pull-down menu on the "Reply" button (in the upper right portion of the message screen). If you pull down that menu, you'll see "Add to Contacts list."

Posted by: GregJ at July 3, 2009 10:57 AM

Someone at Gmail likes "hide and seek" game. I just spent 30 min trying to figure out how to add contact
of a person who's not a sender to Gmail yet and couldn't. I don't have "more inf" or more option either. Why don't you copy Yahoo mail? It's so much simplier

Posted by: inna gokhman at July 30, 2009 4:37 PM

why is it so hard to add a new contact? I may or may not have received or sent mail yet--just want to update my list of contacts--this is absurd--just a simple "add new contact" would be so easy!!

Posted by: Jean Cox at August 13, 2009 10:12 AM

Im the new version of gmail there is a little tiny
arrow. Its like an inverted triangle next to the reply link. When you click there
the old options appear including the add to contact list option

Posted by: Fernando at August 19, 2009 11:26 AM

The little drop down arrow does not contain the option to add the contact to address book...

Posted by: Bob at September 2, 2009 11:05 PM

I can't find the option on the drop down menu next to reply either... maybe the gmail development team should stop fiddling around with labs until they've got the basics sorted.

Posted by: Long Jon at September 30, 2009 4:57 AM

I see the arrow next to reply but there is nothing for add to contacts. Gmail sucks! I am going to have to go back to using yahoo or hotmail since this is way too difficult!

Posted by: Bernee at October 16, 2009 11:59 AM

Adding contacts is very very complicated. The way to do it (on my Mac) is as follows: (1) When you are looking at your email place your mouse arrow over the name of the person who you want to add. Even without clicking, a box appears. If it has three tabs: Email, Chat, and "More", you're in business. (2) Click "More." (3) From the drop box, hit "contact details". You will then be taken to a strange looking window. (4) At this point, you should be able to click the button that shows a plus sign and a person. Then click the box next the to name of the person you want to add. At that point some warning box comes up--just say OK. At that point your contact is added! phew!

Posted by: Sam at October 23, 2009 9:18 AM

I have carefully read all the comments above and I still can't add a contact without manually editing the fields. It is so basic, but I guess that there is NO WAY to add a contact by simply selecting the address from a received message. I really have been depending on gmail, but I will have to change to something else. It is stupid that this isn't just a single click option.

Posted by: Micmac at October 28, 2009 2:25 PM

Yes, there does not appear to be a direct way of doing this anymore. However, if you have replied to the sender, the contact will have automatically been created.

Posted by: Keith at November 30, 2009 11:24 AM

Thank you for the answer. Indeed, the new gmail has the triangle icon pointing down. To find it, first notice that each email in a thread of emails is framed by it's own rounded-corner-rectangle. In the upper right-hand corner of that thin rectangle is the downward pointing triangle. "Add to Contacts list" is the fifth option after Print. HOWEVER, if you already have that address in your Contacts list then the option to add it does NOT appear.

Posted by: Ron Frank at December 4, 2009 12:02 PM

As of 12/14/2009, here's how to add a contact to your address book directly from an email that they have sent you:

Open the email. You will see a Reply button with a curved arrow, and next to that, a button with a triangle pointed down. Click this "triangle" button.

The options shown (as I look at them now) are:

Reply to all
Forward
Filter messages like this
Print
Add _____________ to Contacts list
Delete this message
Report phishing
Show original
Message text garbled?

See that 5th one? THAT'S THE ONE YOU WANT. If it's not there, it means the contact is already in your list.

For some reason it's easy to miss. I looked past it several times, and ended up here looking for answers. When I read the explanations in the comments, I looked again and this time I saw it. So go look again.

is this a bug? (i'm using the dutch gmail version)

Posted by: me at January 12, 2010 4:05 PM

This is nuts. The problem on this thread was identified in 2007, and in my version of gmail there STILL is no "Add to contacts" under the down-pointing arrow. Hello Google? Can you take a TINY pause from raking in all that cash to fix this?

Posted by: Michael Slattery at January 13, 2010 9:04 AM

The option to add a sender to your "my contacts" list should be available from the drop down menu next to the top right reply button, BUT ONLY if the sender of the email you opened isn't yet included in your contacts list! You can only add NEW EMAIL ADDRESSES to "my contacts" and existing contacts can't be listed twice. Simple as that.

Posted by: peterb at January 19, 2010 12:17 PM

When I hit the arrow sometimes it gives me the option to add and other times it doesn't give me the option.

So I thought maybe it only gives me the option to add if I have not added it all ready.

So I checked and it seems random.
1) If it is all ready in my contacts then the option won't appear. That is good

1) If the contact is not all ready in my contact list, sometimes I have the option to ad and other times I don't...that part seems random.

Has anyone noticed this?

Posted by: Stewart at January 22, 2010 5:55 PM

I FIGURED IT OUT!

If when you use the little arrow for the pull down menu and you do not see an option to add the contact to the list YET THE CONTACT IS NOT ON THE LIST.
do this:

Open contacts then under "search contacts" type in any letter of the alphabet. Say you type in the letter "a"

then under the column that is under "search contacts" all your contacts are there but if you scroll to the bottom of the page you will see the contacts that are not in contact book but that you have responded to. Click on it and then click "move to contacts"

Go through all the letters and you will have added them all.

I can update my phone (android) address book and it appears correct on my computer. BUT I do not know how to update using my computer so it will be correct on my phone. I have a query about adding email address of a any person in the contact list please suggest me!

Posted by: Hassan Noor at June 16, 2010 10:56 AM

After three years, this one still has legs. I'm looking for a way to add someone to my address book that I sent a message to. The triangle next to the reply button does not include ADD TO CONTACTS and the address is not already in my address book. When I perform a search of my contacts, this person does not show up. Do I have to manually add addresses to people that I've sent messages to?

Posted by: Dave at July 10, 2010 6:30 PM

This is crazy stupid. How company with virtually unlimited resources screw up such a simple feature. It should not take 30 minutes, or even 5 for that matter, to figure out how to add a contact to your list. Google should be embarrassed.

Posted by: dtowler at July 13, 2010 6:38 AM

how can i add a new contact in my accounts

Posted by: mahmud at July 27, 2010 12:05 PM

So I've found how to add the contacts, but I've still got a bit of a problem. I'd like to add new contacts to a group without going to the contacts page. Maybe Add To Contacts -> 'list of groups created' as a dropdown menu.

I'm a professional musician and I use gmail to manage my band emails, and sometimes I get emails from fans or venues that I don't use often, but want to keep. It's a pain to add each of them to my contacts list, then slog through the contacts screen to add them to a fan list or venue list.

Posted by: Phil at August 2, 2010 8:35 AM

The UNENDING PROBLEM.

So from what I have read in this thread.

- More Options : button does not exist
- switch to older version : cannot find option
- Triangle next to reply : seems to be the right choice SOMETIMES. I was able to add a some addresses in some emails but not all.
- Check if email addresses are already in book if you cannot add : no they are not. Testes this by searching and trying to get it to auto complete those addresses in a new email
- to the guy above who says "I FIGURED IT OUT" : again worked for some addresses but not all. Seems to only work for ones you have responded to at some point and not ones that are in the header that you just want to add for potential future contact

----

I am so upset that I changed over everything to GMail and changed all my contact info. Who would have thought such fundamental problems like this would simply be ignored by google.

3 days ago gmail was fine. Now I can't find how to add new contacts. The contacts that I have are missing all the groups they were assigned to and I can't find a way to reassign them to a group. Has something changed recently? My husband has the same problem.

Posted by: Kim at October 16, 2010 2:28 PM

I was looking for this as well and landed here. I finally figured out how to add contacts from the emails.

On the email view, at the top right corner, there's a Reply button. Next to it is an arrow pointing downward. Click on it and you'll see a dropdown menu. You'll see an "Add 'sender's name' to Contacts List" option.

That's it! Hope it helps.

Posted by: Maha at February 5, 2011 5:48 AM

I do not have a "More Options". My "Reply" drop-down menu does not have "Add [contact-name] to your Contacts list". Is it possible that this only works for GMAIL addresses? I am so mad at what used to be a SIMPLE process, would like to give gmail or google a word or two. Thanks.

Posted by: Linda at March 1, 2011 6:06 PM

Guys, if you haven't figured this out by now it's not that difficult.

1) If you are VIEWING an email that you want to add, then click the down arrow next to "reply." As mentioned previously, the "add contact" option will only appear if the contact is not already added.

2) If you want to just add an address WITHOUT receiving and email first the are three menu options right beneath the Gmail logo "Mail," "Contacts," and "Tasks." Choose Contacts and then there are a couple ways to add an address from there, which should be easy enough to figure out.

Good Luck! Phil

Posted by: Phil at March 4, 2011 5:59 AM

@Phil: No it's not difficult, just tedious. The primary problem that people are having is how to add new contacts that are on *the recipient list*, but are not the sender. There is *no option* to do that directly from the message. One must manually do it. No, not difficult, but surely this is any easy fix.

Google? Are you there? Can you hear me now?

The situation occurs frequently in a business setting. A contact (C) sends me and another person (X) an email, making an introduction. I should be able to the person X to my contacts with one click.

Posted by: A1 at March 15, 2011 8:02 AM

@A1
That's exactly what I'm looking for. I need to add the contacts on the recipient list which is usually around 20+ people. Is there any 3rd party software or plugins that can do this?

Posted by: matchpoints at March 17, 2011 10:17 AM

ADDING OTHER RECIPIENTS is much easier than the last two posts (by A1 and matchpoints) imply. Not as simple as one click - but remember you may not want every single address in a list. I just put a distribution list of 75 into My contacts using Copy and Paste as follows:
--click Show Details on the mail's Subject line and that will expose the whole dist'n list
--select as much of the list as you want
--Copy the selection
--Click on Contacts in the left margin (Contacts/Mail/Tasks) then click on My Contacts or whatever contacts group you choose
--At the top or bottom of the Contacts list click on Add to "My Contacts" and Paste into the two line box that opens.
Done.

BTW regarding duplicates - the addresses will appear only once each.
My data were all in the form Name1 Name2 [Name3] email

Posted by: Len at March 17, 2011 11:19 PM

OK, I added a contact w/ dropdown arrow and the message appeared saying that a new contact had bee added. Then when I clicked on "move to" the original contact list dropped down but did not have the contact I just added. This such a simple operation in hotmail, I can't believe google has no solution for this!!! I am so happy w/ gmail otherwise and will never return to hotmail but that is one feature I really want. Thank you,JAMES

James

Posted by: James at July 1, 2011 6:13 PM

I found a way to add people to "Contacts"

Open the email that has the email links of various people beside the "To" and "From" zones.
Click on one as if you are going to send them an email. (a new window opens)
Save as a draft.
On main window, go to right hand side.
Find your Name and email address. Below it are 4 icons (one is a pone). Click the arrow on the right. It is just above a small link called "show details."
There you are given the "add to contact" opportunity.

It's a bit of a pain, but until Google makes life a little easier for us on this front, it's the best I've found.

As of October 30, 2011, this is how you add a person to your Contacts list if you have received an email from them, but never sent them an email:

1. Open the email you received from the person whom you wish to add to your Contacts List

2. Hover your Cursor Arrow over the person's name at the top of the message they sent to you.

3. A small window will appear below the person's name. In that window the perons's email address will appear, and below and to the right of three choices, a pull-down window marked MORE will appear.

4. Click on the word MORE

5. Click on ADD to CONTACTS

6. You are done.

When I attempted to go to the gear icon and temporarily revert to the "old" gmail format, I did not have that option. Can you tell me how to find my contact list and if it is possible to revert back. I don't even know how I ended up with this new version in the first place. all other users in my home still have the old version. Help :/

Posted by: Betsy at December 20, 2011 3:26 PM

For the "new look" gmail it is easy to add a contact that you have not sent nor received an email from at the time you want to add them.

1. Look in the upper left corner of the screen. Right under the logo, click on Mail (with a down arrow next to it).

2. Select "Contacts"

3. Above the contact list there are three icons. select the person with a + sign next to them.

4. Type in contact info.

YAY!

Posted by: Toxigal at December 21, 2011 8:16 AM

I'm forced to use the basic HTML version of Gmail because of occasional shaping by ISP for Gmail at times and I'm unable to find anywhere with any method I can add a contact who I've never sent to or received email from when shaped.
The only way I could get my curent contacts into Gmail/contacts was to import them for yahoo and too bad if I want to add any new ones.

Shame on you Google and Gmail!

Posted by: kellio at January 1, 2012 1:59 PM

This is idiotic, they spend millions of dollars forcing people in crappy javascript email. Which is slow, prone to lock up at least one of your cpu cores, and a privacy and security risk. Not to mention you must keep buying new devices to render the scripts, use crappy browsers that lock up the OS like Chrome.

Life was so much easier before advent of flash and javascript. At least there are enough email and streaming video sites that avoid js and flash that I can get even the oldest mashines to be productive. While Chrome and Facebook will choke up even a 3 ghz broad band router and machine with constant code execution in crappy languages.

Disable js, flash, and chrome (the 40+instance browser) and watch how much smoother your machine runs and how much faster the isp will be. Save the bandwidth for netflix, who does video right--avoids flash.
