How do I add a Google Gmail sender to my contact list address book?

This is such a simple question I can't believe I'm asking it! Being a huge gmail fan since switching from hotmail I can't find out how to save the sender's address to my contcats list other than copying and pasting the address having gone to contaxts and create a new contact. Surely the good people at google have a one click solution for me that I just can't find! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dave's Answer:

Your confusion is understandable, because like so many features in Google's splendid Gmail service, what you seek is hidden under the innocuously labeled More options link.

To accomplish what you seek, simply open up a message from the sender who is to be memorialized in your address book. The head of the message will look like this message from my friend Scott Allen:

Gmail: More Options

Click on "More options", though, and suddenly there's a world of choices:

Gmail: Add Sender to Contact List

You can see the option you want: Add sender to contacts list. Assuming everything works properly -- and it should -- you'll now see a status message above the email:

Gmail: Added Sender to Contacts List

That's all there is to it. Hope that helps you figure the "one click" solution!

Hi there:
It looks like the "more options" choice has disappeared? If there's a way to "unhide options" I don't see it. Thanks

Posted by: dick willson at May 9, 2008 8:41 AM

I cannot see "more option" link either. Tried both "older" and "newer" versions. Anyone knows how to bring it back or have it displayed? thanks

Posted by: gregoz at June 17, 2008 1:00 PM

I cant find it and I dont have a date in that location like the sample does, only a time of day

Posted by: paula huffines at June 18, 2008 4:17 PM

I found it next to the reply button, top right

Posted by: paula huffines at June 18, 2008 4:22 PM

I had this problem and like the rest of you could not find the more options link anymore. I had to click on the older version link at the top right of the page. The older version looks very much like the newer version, but there is a difference in the reply options. Click on the arrow next to reply and then you'll find the option to add this person to your contacts list. HOpefully this helps someone.

@Frank Poliat: Use the dropdown arrow next to "Reply".

I switched to gmail about 4 months ago... and I'm sorry I did. I like the new yahoo mail much better. This is just me, so don't get upset! there is no right or wrong answer, but I too could not find how to simply add a sender to my contact list. Finally, I had to switch to the older version in order to do it... poor design by google. Yahoo is so easy. Also, the way messages roll up has its definite pros and cons... if you have a single subject line to multiple people, it can make it very difficult to track messages from individuals... so overall I don't like it... hard to read at times too... other than that, many good things, mostly google docs is the reason I went with gmail... thanks for this site! It helped me figure out how to add a contact!

where is the "more option"

Posted by: GOPINATH at June 14, 2009 4:18 AM

There is no "more options" in Gmail anymore. It has been replaced by a pull-down menu on the "Reply" button (in the upper right portion of the message screen). If you pull down that menu, you'll see "Add to Contacts list."

Someone at Gmail likes "hide and seek" game. I just spent 30 min trying to figure out how to add contact
of a person who's not a sender to Gmail yet and couldn't. I don't have "more inf" or more option either. Why don't you copy Yahoo mail? It's so much simplier

Posted by: inna gokhman at July 30, 2009 4:37 PM

why is it so hard to add a new contact? I may or may not have received or sent mail yet--just want to update my list of contacts--this is absurd--just a simple "add new contact" would be so easy!!

Posted by: Jean Cox at August 13, 2009 10:12 AM

Im the new version of gmail there is a little tiny
arrow. Its like an inverted triangle next to the reply link. When you click there
the old options appear including the add to contact list option

Posted by: Fernando at August 19, 2009 11:26 AM

The little drop down arrow does not contain the option to add the contact to address book...

Posted by: Bob at September 2, 2009 11:05 PM

I can't find the option on the drop down menu next to reply either... maybe the gmail development team should stop fiddling around with labs until they've got the basics sorted.

Posted by: Long Jon at September 30, 2009 4:57 AM

I see the arrow next to reply but there is nothing for add to contacts. Gmail sucks! I am going to have to go back to using yahoo or hotmail since this is way too difficult!

Posted by: Bernee at October 16, 2009 11:59 AM

Adding contacts is very very complicated. The way to do it (on my Mac) is as follows: (1) When you are looking at your email place your mouse arrow over the name of the person who you want to add. Even without clicking, a box appears. If it has three tabs: Email, Chat, and "More", you're in business. (2) Click "More." (3) From the drop box, hit "contact details". You will then be taken to a strange looking window. (4) At this point, you should be able to click the button that shows a plus sign and a person. Then click the box next the to name of the person you want to add. At that point some warning box comes up--just say OK. At that point your contact is added! phew!

I have carefully read all the comments above and I still can't add a contact without manually editing the fields. It is so basic, but I guess that there is NO WAY to add a contact by simply selecting the address from a received message. I really have been depending on gmail, but I will have to change to something else. It is stupid that this isn't just a single click option.

I have something to say, now that you mention it, but ...
Starbucks coffee cup I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you for all your efforts on this Web site by buying you a cup of coffee!

I do have a comment, now that you mention it!
