How do I add a "repository" to Boxee?

A friend of mine has Boxee running on her computer via a Mac Mini and I was pretty darn impressed. Tons of content, a slick interface, very fun. Problem is, when I got Boxee going on my computer, I found it had a lot less content. Digging around a bit reveals that the extra channels are added by accessing "Boxee content repositories" but I have no clue how to do that. Do you use Boxee? Can you help?

Dave's Answer:

I have dabbled with Boxee and find it to be a pretty cool application with a very smooth interface. I'm looking forward to the Boxee hardware unit (from D-Link) that will let me skip buying yet another computer but still use it to watch movies, browse photos, and generally work with the wealth of multimedia content I have both locally and on the network.

Meanwhile, though, it can be a bit arcane because it's all evolving so quickly. For example, when I tried to find a good list of Boxee Repository sites, the best I could find was this one on the Boxee support forum: Boxee Forum: Where can I find repository addresses? Problem is, many of these links seem to be broken, which isn't so useful.

I did find a few that worked, however, and figured out how to add them to Boxee, a process that isn't as simple as it could be...

Start up Boxee and you'll see the usual main menu:

boxee main menu home

Choose "Apps" from this list and you'll see:

boxee main menu my apps

See that little yellow square on the left side? Move over to it and it'll slide across to reveal some settings and options you can tweak:

boxee main menu my apps menu

The last choice here is "Repositories". That's what you want. Select it in Boxee and you'll move to here:

boxee main menu my apps menu repositories

More likely than not, you won't have any results showing, as I don't here either.

No reason to panic. Choose "Add Repository" and you'll get a data input window that pops up:

boxee main menu my apps menu repositories add repository

Here I'm adding a Boxee repository called "Great Boxee" at http://dir.greatboxee.com/

When I'm ready to proceed and have entered the URL properly, I click on "Done" and it scans the content, identifying as many channels as it finds.

In this case there are only two...

boxee main menu my apps menu repositories add repository great boxee

Now, what can you do with 'em? Chose one and you'll see the Boxee options:

boxee main menu my apps menu repositories add repository dime casts options

At this point I'd suggest you "Start" the channel to see if it's something you want to keep. If it is, go back here and select either "Add to My Apps" or "Add Shortcut", depending on where you want it to show up. You'll have the best results with a minimum number of shortcuts that you actually view frequently, and drop everything else into the Apps area.

A tip: the best Boxee repository I've found so far is Fuzzthed.com and its URL is http://dir.fuzzthed.com. It has tons of channels. Sweet!

That's it. Now, where's that Boxee hardware device? :-)
